  • Welcome to a quick video showing you how I sharpen my chisels I use day to day. It's nothing special, I use a Toemek to grind a bevel back and then a diamond stone to hone a edge. The bevel can be ground back with any grinder, just be sure not to heat the cutting edge and alter the tempering of the steel!
    Using a leather strop you can hone the edge to a sharp enough level for most general woodworking to a professional standard. It takes a couple of minutes per chisel and there is no excuse not to have sharp kit.

      Haha! I never sharpen my chisels much until I end up on site... Terrible place 🤣

    Brilliant, it’s something I’ve only partly mastered, think it’s the leather stropping I’ve failed on. But you’ve encouraged me to redo mine. I have a 15 year old Tormek I invested in, wanting to getter a better edge on my tools. 👍🏻😀

      Yeah it probably is, once you've got a burr only light pressure from then on a d work the leather alternating sides to remove burr and polish the edge.

    An excellent, clear video on how to sharpen a hand chisel. It’s certainly a lot different and easier than when I started. I wouldn’t entirely trust my memory but I don’t think we had secondary bevels then; sharpening was less and more often; different steel used?
    I now sharpen mine in pretty much the same way - but, for whatever reason, it takes me longer at the wheel and stone to get the edge that you achieve. I use my Tormek T8 exactly as you do and then go to waterstones (flattening them with a diamond stone) on a couple of grits (usually 4000 and 8000). However, I use a Veritas honing guide (it’s a good guide and second only, IMO, to the Lee Nielsen but a lot cheaper) because I found that my old hands wouldn’t keep the chisel square enough to get an even secondary bevel. Onto the leather wheel for a polish. I keep a piece of leather glued to a piece of plywood by my side at the bench to encourage me to hone quite often.
    I’m only workshop based and so it’s easy to keep to that discipline. I’ve found that, for me, everything has to be at hand and easy - otherwise, the temptation is to take a few more cuts before the sharpening raffle and it is those cuts which aren’t good enough. I only use hardwoods - except for jig making - and plywood or Medite - which does take a heavier toll than if I used mainly softwoods but there is something almost exciting about chiselling end grain on a piece of hard oak and getting that mirror finish. Don’t pity me, at my age, you have to take small pleasures wherever you find them and it will come to the rest of you soon enough.

      Cheers Theo, the secondary bevel only needs to be a micro edge, infact any more and your just wasting chisel and number of honings before you need to regrind! two light passes down the diamond stone will be sufficient..
      There is no greater pleasure than using a perfectly sharp chisel! haha

    One of the most important tasks, very easy to learn, but hard to master, once mastered, becomes second nature.

      @BradshawJoinery  5 лет назад

      Absolutley! It's a basic task once mastered but I remember trying to get a sharp edge as an apprentice spending hours finding a way that worked for me

    if you still got the second grinder you used could you show us how you made a jig to set the angle for the chisel

    • @BradshawJoinery
      @BradshawJoinery  2 года назад

      Really simple, just need a 60/70mm wide board to rest the back of the chisel on to hold the angle, much the same as a recular bench grinder rest

      @@BradshawJoinery I got a tormek tool rest that I was going to use but I don't have the bars and I don't know what else to use

    Having used a radial arm saw for a hand full of times yours really makes me nervous 😂 lock on switch, no guard. I tell my class mates who arnt as capable to only do what they feel comfortable doing, which I feel is good advice. But still your radial is vicious

      HI Beck, my radial i a bit unique. its pretty much impossible to make it jump out at you (like a typical radial) It is so heavy it doesnt move quick. i have had 4" oak 18" wide bind and drop pinching the blade and it just takes it. i have used the overhead rail type wadkins before and yes they are lethal and would never use them like i do this one.

    Funny that. Every time a chisel, milling machine or lathe bed gets dinged, it's always someone else did it. 🤔

    Hello mate, why don’t you use the tormek to finish your chisels and use the linishing wheel. I don’t think I have used a stone to 2 years since I got mine.
    Just an observation not a criticism

    • @BradshawJoinery
      @BradshawJoinery  5 лет назад +1

      Hey buddy, if I'm in the workshop I'll use the leather wheel to hone the edge free hand, it takes too long setting the rail up and is a bit pointless imo for a normal chisel. I use the hand stone as it puts a very slight convex cutting edge which is very strong, the Tormek stone leaves a concave hollow Grind which is a very fine edge and will deny very easily. So the short answer is longevity!

    • @denty32
      @denty32 5 лет назад +1

      Bradshaw Joinery I did think that regarding the longevity but if I’m honest I don’t Cain my chisels so I’m not sharpening them that often.
      Great content mate always a great watch 👍

      No worries buddy! I'm glad the videos are being enjoyed!
      I do sometimes hone the edge straight off the Tormek grind. Normally is I have some end grain work it makes light work of slicing through the timber.
