I have just found you on RUclips. Where have you been all my life. I have been smocking for years, well off and on. My last project was a disaster, so I have now gone through all of the steps to the smocked dress and several other videos. So thankful that you have been gracious enough to share your knowledge and skills with others.
The attention to detail you out into making this beautiful dress is astounding! i’m going to have a go as soon as i can get a pattern for a smocked dress, or maybe having a go at making my own pattern.
Hi, I am not quite sure about your question, but the video is showing how to pin the smocked area to fit the blocking guide, so if your smocked piece is wider than the guide then pull the pleater threads tighter till the fabric matches the blocking guide. Hope this helps. Thanks Christine
This is so helpful, thank you! I can find a thousand videos of how to stitch the smocking, but so few telling me how to actually make up the garment with the smocked fabric. (I'm guessing/hoping that I can substitute overlocking in place of zig zag and cut!)
Hi ...very well explained thank you ... But I have doubt regarding steam ironing... When ha it to be done... After making the pleats... Or after finishing the smocking embroidery...
Thank you. Usually you steam after you finish the smocking but you can do it before and after if your fabric does not hold pleats well. Always do it after you finish the smocking though.
Thank you, I don't teach picture smocking sorry, I usually smock bishops in the round but will have a go at the American way (straight) and see how that goes
Just beautiful! I am new to smocking, just purchased a pleater, and your videos make it look like I just might be able to do this, lol!! What pattern are you using? Thank you
Hi G, you start with a rectangle of fabric and pleat the top edge, I think I have a video on explaining the Chery Williams pattern which might help. Thanks Christine
The width of the fabric will be different depending on the size of the dress and the thickness of the fabric. You pattern should tell you this. Thanks Christine
It depends on how thick your fabric is but a basic rule is 3" of fabric for 1" of Smocking. If your fabric is fine then you will need more width but if your fabric is finer then you will need more width.
The fabric width for each size will be given in your pattern and will depend on the thickness of your fabric. Fine cottons will need more width than heavier weight fabric. For cotton like the Rose & Hubble I would use 30-36" for babies and 40" for 12mth - 24mth and 45" for bigger sizes. These are only ball park figures, best to do a test piece, cut 12" of fabric and smock a few rows and see how wide it is once you remove the pleater threads. As I say, it all depends on the thickness of the fabric and the tension you work to. Hope this helps.
I have never smocked before but would love to do it for my little girl I normally just buy them but would love to actually be able to make them thank you very much
I used the Chery Williams baby square yoke pattern and used the measurements in that for the size I was making. Please refer to your pattern for measurements for the size you want to make.
Not quite sure what you mean, every pattern will be different as to how many rows you would do for size 6 along what length to do. You will have to refer to your pattern thanks Christine

That made me smile, it is only schoolgirl sewing but it works for me and helps with the basics. So glad you found me. Thanks Christine

Hello i am begginer and i have the question. What mean pulle up the pleats?

Thank you for your kind comments. Yes you could use an overlocker but probably more difficult to get round a curve.
Wow I love the dress at the beginning of the video! At 0:02, I noticed there is crease marks from the pleating below the smocking section. Why?
I pleated more rows than I smocked in addition to the holding row, these should iron out after washing
Marsvilloso trabajo 🙏🙏🙏♥️♥️♥️
Love the smocking plate

Thank you ..will do that
How many needles are usually used to pleat in the pleater machine?
Depends on the size of dress and whether you want half spaces or not. The small the dress the less needles/rows
que bien explica usted todos los detalles. gracias!
Beautiful please also share some tutorials on picture smocking n how to smock a bishop straight
Thank you, I don't teach picture smocking sorry, I usually smock bishops in the round but will have a go at the American way (straight) and see how that goes

Hope you are enjoying your Pleater. I used the Baby Square yoke pattern by Chery Williams for that dress.
Is it possible to show from beginning how to cut and start the smoking

Hi , can you tell me the wide of fabric to match the top dress
The width of the fabric will be different depending on the size of the dress and the thickness of the fabric. You pattern should tell you this. Thanks Christine
Hello can you please tell me what fabric you are using? Thx
Hi, yes it is poplin, very similar to imperial broadcloth
Hello can you tell me the proportion ? How many inches should I take to get a ten inch wide price?

How do you know how much smocking to do like in width for differnt sizes please
