2 years plus later and this is still one of the best songs I’ve ever heard.
The way the beat switches from the original sample to boom bap to trap is nothing short of genius.
How he do that ? Because the bpm is faster on the trap part, but the sample is still Exactely the same, with the same speed

Its just that the boom bap beat is in 4/4 and composed of 4th and 8th notes and the trap beat is more subdivided, with 8th notes, 16th notes, triplets. Trap is not "faster" tham boom bap, its just subdivided into smaller values

One of the things I love most about Denzel is that he continues to evolve his style more and more, and it sounds better every time. Evolution is rare in rap nowadays since rappers will just ride with what works until they retire. Can't wait for the album.

Half the beat is classic boom bap to early 90's conscious. The video is Sergio Leone all the way which has massive influence from Kurosawa. The SF elements are def SW which also takes from Kurosawa. This track and this video are everything great with hip hop. For a 43 yo french canadian dude who started with KRS, MC Solaar and Digable Planets this is pure eargasm

Holy shit… this track is amazing. Killer sample, it’s so cool to see zel’s epic flow switches over a lighter more spacious (for lack of better word) beat. That transition at the beginning into the bass beat behind zels verse was so dope. Also the cinematography is great, I love the warm filters and desert scenes.
All of these thoughts are from my first listen btw, I don’t think I’ve ever been as excited for a zel album, and that includes when I heard Percz for the first time before TA13OO. Excellent job mr. curry you are legitimately owning the rap game.

well, not a lot of people watch music videos, they just stream the actual song, and on spotify, it has over triple the views of this video.
I just think it's crazy we're at a point where people look down upon hundreds of thousands or millions of views. I know it's about the comparison to more popular videos/songs, but it's still crazy to think about. Back in 2008, 40k views in a day would classify as "viral" and probably get picked up by news stations for entertainment pieces. Now we don't even turn our heads for 7 digit views; crazy.
If we don't think people are acknowledged, appreciated and "successful" until everything they do gets 10m+ views in a month, it's no wonder more kids have low self esteem nowadays.
I listened to this a couple times and my eyes are still dropping tears n cries cuz i feel this too much.
Man this shit makes me so happy. I remember listening to Denzel when he was in Rxidxr Klvn, has been such an inspiration to see him grow into the artist he is today. He is a big reason music went the way it did, him and Simmie helped make history with some of their older hits.
This song just reminds me of how hard real life hit me outside of school from being so sheltered... it's like life hits you like a ton of bricks and you're just expected to know how to navigate. Coming from a 27 yr old whos led a very dark past, and survived... it does get better. Never give up, and stay strong.💛
