I saw Amy Winehouse in concert, supporting Arctic Monkeys at old Trafford cricket stadium. It was astounding to hear that voice live, it was similar to hearing Bjork in concert, just wow...
She died of alcohol poisoning on 23 July 2011, at the age of 27. After her death, Back to Black temporarily became the UK's best-selling album of the 21st century. VH1 ranked Winehouse 26th on their list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music.
Growing up she was listening to Other music than many of her generation. She loved the jazz masters, like Tony Bennet and OLDER artists, and many genre's as well. She wrote songs and was excellent on jazz guitar. She had some mental health issues and the sudden fame was so hard on her, she was too fragile for what was to come. She depended on a toxic boyfriend, her Father wasn't on her side as he should have (enjoyed her fame), and taking drugs and alcohol was her escape. I remember how some comedians told vicious, demeaning jokes about her, her appearance as she declined, and all of that hurt. She really didn't want the huge fame she did get. RIP.
Sadly she is a member of the 27 Club. As for voice she started as a jazz singer but you can tell she was influenced by Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday, Dusty Springfield and even Bobbie Gentry she really knew her craft and it always showed.
Amy was a brilliant singer. Such a sad end to her life. Empress a great video as always. You are so good with your reaction videos, great music choices and you always look stunning. a pleasure to watch.
She takes the emotion that is shot through the universe, the love we all are a part of, and distills it into her voice, presenting it back to us as a divine gift. A gift.
Hi Empress - you just about summed Amy up perfectly. Soul and grit. Have a listen to the mark ronson produced version of this , that was her big hit of 2008, stunning … but this simple acoustic shows her voice for sure. Stunning. Sadly gone

One of my favorite female voices all time, Behind Janis Joplin, They both naturally soulful and giioosshh! Can they Blow!.

when you said soulful and raspy, I immediately thought of Nina Simone.

I've only heard one singer lately that has that "thing" she had. If you do a review or not, check out Sierra Ferrell. She has it.
