People are missing the fact that he demanded $32 million before stepping onto that word camp stage trashing WP engine. Extortion.

I meant to mention that in this video, asking for 8% of a company's revenue for profiting off open source software is ridiculous.

Dude, I’ve been building wordpress sites forever but am completely out of tune with the developer community. That said, I was really interested in this beef as I’ve used all of these products (a lot). Was trying piece it all together - great explainer, thanks

True nerd here...A similar thing happened earlier this year with Wizards of the Coast and the Dungeons and Dragons development community. WOTC got greedy and started enforcing some longtime sentiments whereby the development community would have to start paying royalty fees to WOTC for building things based on the D&D structure. Well, it wasn't long until the development community (and players) revolted and WOTC had to walk it all back in about a week. Looks like the same situation here.

This sounds exactly like what it is. What's interesting is that so many companies provide Managed WordPress and WooCommerce hosting, and I would guess a lot don't contribute all that much. I think WP Engine could do a little more than they are, but to expect them to pay 8% of revenue is ridiculous.

I’ve always thought WPEngine is overpriced, but I’ve never thought that WordPress owned it just like I didn’t think WordPress owned WPBeginner or WPForms, it’s definitely that the Automattic CEO has a grudge

@@Surfsideppc I’ve worked on hundreds of sites hosted on wpengine and never once thought the two were affiliated. 🤷‍♂️
