  • Journalist and author Paola Ramos sits down with Michael Kosta to discuss her new book “Defectors: The Rise of the Latino Far Right and What it Means for America.” Following the vice-presidential debate between JD Vance and Tim Walz, they discuss why Trump’s messaging is resonating with Latino voters, Vance’s dehumanizing comments about immigrant families, the impact of cultural forces like race, colorism, and colonialism, and what Democrats can do to reach out to more Latino voters. #DailyShow #PaolaRamos #Latino

Not a crazy idea if you consider that the elites are frequently mocking the Republican voter. From Obama, to mainstream media, to social media they all make jokes about the values and lifestyles of people who follow the GOP. It is like this notion that voting Dem makes you smart and cool, when in reality the Dems have abandoned most of the issues of the little guy and only come back to talk about them during the election cycles. Yesterday Kamala spoke about a financial program to help Black Men get ahead. Why now? That's why the male segment of the Dem Party is bleeding heavily.

"X minority" can be racist too", is something Democrats have trouble with. There's a reason they can't really address this, and it's something that causes issues not just for Democrats, but the left in general, and that's *essentialism*. In short, you hear correct narratives about systemic issues including racism as being different from overt racism, but many want to simplify this to attack individuals rather than fix difficult problems. Meanwhile the right actively pretends there is no difference, further confusing everyone. Then, to top it off, grifters will infect organisations built to address strategic problems with their personal grievances. (Note these people are usually deeply conservative, regardless how they present, often being a minority).

When she said nativism it reminded me... Almost none of us are natives. My belief is that any anti immigrant stance is inherently hypocritical in the context of American history. My great grandfather escaped war and subjection in Macedonia, story goes he went through Ellis Island. Well, not everyone gets that opportunity and ultimately that opportunity exists because true natives were pushed out.

In addition to colonialist racism, internalized, there is Latino confusion about governments calling themselves socialist, which in modern terms means controlled and policed capitalism, as in Scandinavia...whereas communism is a one-party system, where the rich, as in theocracies, enslave the poor...a relative matter, as education has been 'tracked' everywhere, condemning some to generations of semi-literacy...a high school education now means...just that. Which is unjust. Fascism and dictatorships, where MAGA is headed, are simply other versions of one party states. Dictators, oligarchs, theocrats...super rich buying 'justice', installing corrupt judges...McConnell...and remember Clarence and Alito are from earlier versions of the increasingly fascistic Republicans... Labels are not reality, the map of the territory, as philologists said, can be very skewed, warped, mis-lensed. And for MAGA's deluded, the label is All. Alternative fictions. Muy bien, senorita Ramos...el gusto es nuestro.

People who have absolutely nothing to do with Puerto Rico but since her followers don't read, just like Trump's followers, the tactic has been doing what she hoped would do, scare the 💩 out of them so that they don't vote for independence. Those followers of hers are also Trump supporters which I find totally disgusting given his track record not only with Puerto Ricans but with Latinos in general.
If you're Puerto Rican, have some effing dignity and vote for Kamala Harris.

Their whole platform is about exiting the United States and implementing a Socialist government. What do you think will happen to Puerto Rico without US dollars? What will they sell and who will they sell it to? .......It is it really fear mongering or is it just math?

Saludos Hector. The attacks on the left in PR have always been the same. In the past it was Ruben Berrios (PIP), Mari-Bras, Gallisa Partido (Socialista) who were associated to the socialists and communists of the world. As the independence movement makes inroads both, the PNP and PPD will try to discredit them and create fear in the voters. But the day will come when the independence movement is strong enough to take control of the country. We will see if the voters make that choice.

This doesn't surprise me at all as a Latino. In her conversation on Apple News, she talks about where the Left/Democrats have failed Latinos. For one, most Latinos in America speak English now as their primary language, not Spanish. Latinos are racially diverse, but even among Latinos who are of African ancestry, many may not self-identify as "Black." Latinos can be of any race, many are multi-generational, and their story to immigration may be a distant one by now. Latinos are religious, with Latinos now being the fastest growing demographic among Evangelicals and Muslims. YES, Latinos are converting to Islam! For many Latinos, "communism" is tied to trauma and dislocation from Leftist regimes like Cuba and Venezuela (1/4 of Venezuela's population has fled the Maduro regime). So the GOP linking Democratic social policies to "communism" is very effective. Spanish language radio in the US is very conservative, with many hosts mirroring the disinformation peddled by the Right and Trump. Latinos are complex, we LACK racial solidarity like African Americans and ethnic solidarity like Jewish Americans. And yes, some Latinos are Jewish, as well. Democrats can't take Latinos for granted, since we now constitute a growing segment of the populations in many key swing states.

It’s not voting against our own interests at all !! It’s just a simple matter of a sense of the United States controlling the rate of immigration not the other way around. I’m 🇵🇷 so I’m fortunate enough to not have that issue, but most of Latinos I know outside of that came here legally and went thru a process . The sense of anyone coming here illegally doesn’t sit well with most Americans not just Latinos , democrats have long taken that aspect for granted . If the democrats wake up to the fact ( I believe that is where Harris differs from Biden ) . I believe she would have zero issue signing a tough immigration reform bill. As long as Trump is out of the picture. He shot down a bill that would have started us in the right direction, just to complain about it later .

My husband and I lived and taught in the Coachella Valley, in the East Valley, which is essentially 100% Latino. The entire Valley is heavily Latino, U.S. born, immigrant, migrant, and undocumented. There is a lot of prejudice from naturalized and second and third generation citizens toward immigrants, especially illegal, but also those given amnesty back in 1986, or any perceived to have taken the easy way out to citizenship. Moreover, much bigotry exists in the Mexican culture against other immigrants, especially black and non-Latino. So it doesn't surprise me at all if a significant portion of Latinos of Mexican ancestry feel little empathy for immigrants.

There are many contributions to this and it’s not just about Latinos feeling more white (which is true as well). New conservatism is really appealing to the Machismo in Latino men, and religious conservatism also appeals more to older Latinos.
Latinos are also not a monolith. Cubans and Venezuelans specifically see themselves as fleeing socialism, and conservatives really thrive on anti-socialist rhetoric.
Democrats have also shifted further to the right on immigration. The ACLU literally sued the Biden Admin for his immigration bill. Democrats not only have to point out how bad Trump is, but also push for amnesty and new pathways towards citizenship like the did in 2020. Many young Latinos are feeling left behind by the democrats because of this. Most minority groups also feel a kinship to the Palestine issue, making them less for Harris or Trump.

I just saw Ramos calls Latinos “transphobic”. Please clarify - is it “Transphobic” to believe that men shouldn’t play in women’s sports? B/c about 90% of all people agree with that - and so Latinos are just being reasonable. Is it “transphobic” to not want to indulge in ‘pronouns’ that perpetuate fantasy and leads to compelled speech? This woman is one reason why Kamala got trounced. Accusing rational Latinos who care about real issues as “phobic” bigots is a losing strategy and insulting to all people, not just Latinos.

    Random aside...
Just read an article from south Texas this morning. Local residents, briefly halted construction of a new migrant shelter, upset over its proximity to their neighborhood, schools, etc.
“We are here to stop the construction of this shelter for migrants. It is something we don’t need,” said Beatriz Paredes, whose children attend the nearby elementary and middle schools. “We will be affected, and the children will be affected. A lot of children walk (to school) by themselves. We are not saying they (the migrants) are bad, but we don’t know what habits they have.”
Not to stereotype, but Beatriz Paredes has quite the Latina ring to it, doesn't it?
This, coupled with the fact that there is photographic evidence of "obvious" Latino faces, holding those protests signs...
Regardless of race, color, religion, or creed...nobody's hands are clean in this mess.

When I teach my students about our Latino heritage it is always in the context of the post 1500 age of European expansion and colonialism. Within this context, there are 2 kinds of Latinos: the European descendants and the colonized. This may help explain some of the disparities that arise when discussing the "rise of the Latin right wing". The colonized rarely like to identify with the colonizers, unless there is something to gain by distinguishing themselves apart from their families. But in doing so, they dishonor their personal heritages. That's not being true to Latinos.
