No one else is surprised with this?
Totally agree. No prize money, no title account, no atp points. Apart from federer (who basically owns the event), at first sight, there is indeed very little incentive which would explain why they'd give it all instead of just playing it like they would play an exhibition. Maybe the sponsors are very generous for this event? Maybe we're underestimating their selflessness? Maybe it's the fear for their ego of not being selected the year after? Or maybe they're just really enjoying this unprecedented team format like back in school days when we used to give it all on the football field... It's definitely an interesting question to ask them in an interview. But the question would need to be phrased in a direct and crude fashion if we are to get an honest answer.

But even ellite world class competitors such as they are, it is quite remarkable the level of intensity in such a, to some degree, “meaningless” cup. Sometimes you dont see that intensity at individual events. Take Kyrgios for instance. Have you seen him tanking at big events? Check him against Gasquet in Wimbledon, he wasnt even moving. And here, at the Laver Cup, he gives it all. The only explanatiom I find is that they feel pumped up by the team, and dont want to let down their team players. Other than that, I am still surprised by how intense was the celebration when Federer defeated Kyirgios two years ago in the first edition final match. And how Kyrgios was devastated, it still blows my mind when I watch the match point replay. I havent seen Fed celebrating that much, not even in any of his 20 Grand Slam titles.
