I wouldn't waste a second thinking about qualified ownership. You searched, scraped and purchased it. You deserve it as much as anyone. Keep the Paul alive!
Bob, to me there is absolutely no need to explain why you own such a valuable guitar instead of some contemporary successor. It's been your dream, you've done all necessary to make it come true. Now you do the best thing to do with such a beautiful guitar, you play it. Plus, you do the second best thing, you show and explain this beauty to us. Most of us will probably never come close to such a guitar so we cherish the close-up views and sound bites you share with us. Thank you very much, you're a very kind and generous man!
It is awesome you are the owner of a original unmolested 1958 Burst! The old Bursts to me are the Stradivarius of electric guitars. I only own a Re issue 58 but treasure it and can only imagine what playing and owning a genuine late 50's LP is like.
Let the trolls go, they just want to drag everybody else down. You have always been positive and that's what we need today. Thanks for sharing that beautuful instrument.
I’ve no doubt that the ageing process improves the tonality of good instruments but it’s important to remember that when those iconic recordings such as the ‘beano’ album were made those ‘bursts were not even ten years old..good guitars in the hands of great players..good shout for Gary Green..everybody needs to watch a few gentle giant videos during this lockdown!!
Lovely stuff Bob. Some great stories there. Even in the early 70s a 'burst would sell for around 400 quid which converts to around six grand today. Cheap by today's prices but few could afford them at the time. The best I could manage was a 1971 Les Paul Deluxe with a stripped down top. The mini humbuckers came out and a pair of full size pickups went in.
Well done Bob on achieving your dream; you had a vision, you worked and saved towards it and you made it happen. The result is you have a guitar for the ages that has brought you hours of playing pleasure.
Knowing you to be the consummate gentleman Bob, I am more than satisfied that your beautiful 58 burst is in exactly the right hands. Looking forward to seeing you again when all this has blown over
anyone who is hating on you for "hoarding" guitars in just jealous. I admire you dedication to your goal, its something that a lot of people lack nowadays and instead decide to hate on those who do have it.
You are the kind of person who should own this type of instrument. Too many of these go into vaults with 100 plus guitar collections, never again to see the light of day. They are only appreciated for their monetary worth. You on the other hand will play it , truly appreciate it, and are sharing it . You deserve it .Well done sir . Thank you for sharing your instrument!👍
Thoroughly enjoyed your matter of fact conversation of owning a vintage Les Paul many can only dream of. Hope it gives you many years more of joy! Stay safe
Preach it brother!!! I agree with what you're saying. You deserve that guitar as you worked hard and spent a long amount of time looking for the proper instrument for your needs. Cheers to you brother and I hope you enjoy it for many years to come!
Good luck to you mate.I was given a 50 s Les Paul by a famous guitarist I toured with when I was a young man.Its a nice instrument however in my mid life I bought a 1990 Les Paul Classic. Its the best Les Paul I’ve ever played and I’ve played a lot of 50s Les Pauls.I enjoyed your chat and suffice to say I’m a bit older than you but we both lived through the best of times.
Your absolutely right I don't really know you. In my opinion the trolls are not worth a mention. I am grateful that you own that sunburst and that you share it on U-tube
I was born in 1955. We grew up in a great time for music and a great time for guitars. My dream was always a Gold Top with P-90's. I am fortunate to have one, its isn't a 58, but it will do just fine. Great story Bob, I love listening to you talk guitars. Keep it up.
Thank You so much for sharing. And yes you are correct about anyone being able to own beauties like your Burst. Hard work, a little foresight and above all just hold on to them and never sell. When I was 14 years old I worked very, very hard to save up enough money for a brand new Fender Twin Reverb, that was back in 1976. I still own that amplifier and use it daily. Of course not the same appreciation in value as a Burst, but that isn't the point I'm making, anyone can indeed do what you've done. Congrats Sir and again I thank you for sharing. And get that finger healed up, wise to spend the time practicing slide.
Thank you Bob, this was a great video to watch, and that's an incredible guitar. Congratulations to you on achieving your goal. All the best from Canada.
Wonderful video, I always learn something new. I’m 60 and like you I worked my whole life, and I’m still working. I don’t have anything remotely close to your burst but I do have several very nice guitars. Thanks for letting people know that we don’t have to apologize for getting guitars we’ve worked hard for. At least that was my take.
Great video. Nothing but respect for you in your quest to own a vintage Les Paul. I remember As a 16 year old in Liverpool pressing my nose against the window of Hessey’s music and staring slack jawed at an ebony les Paul custom lying seductively in its pink lined case. I worked two jobs for 15 hours a day for three years until i could buy one of my own. Now many years (and many guitars) later I’m in a privileged position to own some wonderful guitars both vintage and modern and although I’ve done my fair share of touring and gigging with them, sometimes just opening the case and sitting in the living room and having a blast through a small tweed amp brings great pleasure to me.
What a BEAUTIFUL guitar.58-60,the BEST Les Pauls ever made. You don’t have to apologize to anyone for that purchase.Good for you,Sir.I’m 65 and my sophomore year in high school I had the chance to buy a ‘57 Goldtop for $300.00.I thought it was too much money. In 1970 a ‘57 Les Paul was just an old guitar.Win some, lose some.Life goes on.Keep up the good work.
Watched all your guitar collection videos can’t get enough of them. Congratulations on a mouth watering Les Paul. Ignore the trolls and naysayers probably just jealous. More vintage vids please need some escapism in these trying times. Hope the finger gets better soon and please stay safe.
Thank you for your terrific story of the acquisition of your '58 and thank you for sharing your personal history with these wonderful guitars. God bless.
We, who live in the USA, owe so much to Great Britain. The Brits jump started rock 'n roll in the 1960's, after we paused a bit due to the loss of Buddy Holly and Richie Valens. We needed new music from the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Peter Green, et. al. Thank you for offering Jimi Hendrix a second home, as well. Music and popular culture thrive in an environment of new compositions and artistic feedback (across the ocean). The 60's were the perfect storm for those lucky enough to live through it. I know Bob owns some fine examples of ES-335's, but I'd love to see his collection of Les Paul Jr's, and SG's, the more affordable line of Gibsons for aspiring musicians without a suitcase filled with quids.
I was obsessed with Mark Knopfler's tone on Brothers in Arms so I had to have a burst Les Paul. Couldn't afford a real '58 so I bought a replica '59 burst built by Gil Yaron. It's the best guitar I've ever played and I have quite a few good ones.
Bob, I could listen to you for hours. Even if I am not even in my thirties, I also share the same passion that you have for the music and specially for the golden era you mention. It has been as well a dream for me, since I realized about the existance of these almost mythical instruments, to not even own, but to have the chance to play one. Have good recovery and have fun with the slide. Ramon, tu canal es increíble, no dejo de ver videos una y otra vez. Sigue así!
Thank you for this heartfelt and informative lifelong love story Bob. Let the trolls say what they may. It’s not a question of cost but a matter of soul.
Great video, Bob - many thanks. My dad used to tell me as a nipper - half the fun of having something nice, is really wanting badly first and being prepared to work and wait for it.
No no no sir. You are a true player. You give that instrument the play time it deserves. And I agree with you. Anyone can own one. It's just nice when theyre not sitting in a glass case and only being looked at as an investment. Thanks for sharing.
I really appreciate your honesty , so sorry about your finger I hope it heals up soon so you can get back to it. When I came across your video I took one look at your LP guitar and said to myself " He's got my guitar! It looks identical to my LP " but mine is not a 58', it's a 59' re-issue that is aged. Plays great but I'm sure it doesn't cross the finish line like yours. Congrats on your purchase ! Thanks for your personal run down on Blues Artist that influenced you, yes I've added them to my list as well.
Jan Akkerman playing a 56 Black Beauty with Alnico 5 neck pickups and P90 bridge ... ( Focus live at the Rainbow 1973) ... Even Clapton et al would weep at the tones Akkerman achieved! Not to mention His technical ability and His absolutely crushing, musically, and emotionally ... Heartfelt playing. (BTW ... great video ... totally ignore the mentally disturbed haters)
I have heard you play a little in here. You are a musician as far as I'm concerned. as an audio engineer I had the opportunity to have worked on many of EC later records and a rare moment with Blackie, which a private (venture capital) client owned at one time along with the 64 red 335. I have a recording I cannot publicly share that features it and it is incredible how recognizable it is. Rock on , Bob! From NY
Never apologize for obtaining your goals. Good for you. I’m on the same journey. To hell with people who talk but won’t do what’s necessary to achieve.
Really appreciate this video. Straight talking and from the heart. I’ve just started my guitar collecting journey a few years ago and see myself in when you described your start. Just bought a 54 LpC but as luck would have it it’s on the other side of the ocean so god knows when I’ll get my hands on it :)
You remind me of a great story. Walter's widowed sister had taken up with a drinking buddy that he did not think much of. He raised his eye brows and said "he doesn't even keep a garden" Cheers.
Very nice, Kossoff has always been the ultimate Les Paul slinger to me...only ever needed one note to slice through your heart and soul, an innate ability that eludes most other players.
Love your taste in music, agree totally with almost everything you said. Beautiful looking guitar, you’re a lucky man and I can only dream. But for now I’ll make do with my Les Paul Standard, not an original ‘burst but I still love it. Stay safe
Hi Bob, I enjoyed this presentation there is a great upload on the Talk Talk channel with Jon Gundry of THROBAK coils who offers a repro set of Kossoff's PAF's and has an insight on Green's PAF's episode #50 a good source of info ....stay safe.
Touched you mentioned how people seem to feel you shouldn't own it because you're not a 'real musician'. I can't believe anyone would actually say that! You enjoy your guitar mate, its a beauty and you deserve to be happy. If that lump of timber does the trick then go right ahead!
I have a fantastic 60th Anniversary R9 that’s a good one. It’s loud acoustically and screams plugged in. There’s a lot of dogs out there so you need to play them before you buy them. Don’t just look for the flashiest tops either. People need to remember that those fantastic 60’s blues albums were done by what would be considered today as a bunch of amateur musicians. They were barely in their 20’s. They used those Sunburst Les Paul guitars to the best of their young abilities and gave us legendary music.
Wow that’s a beaut. Congratulations on owning such an amazing guitar. You’ll have to give us another video on this when your finger is better so that we can really hear it sing.
Can't get enough burst videos! Keep them coming! I've got another clone nearly built. What's your favorite finish on a Les Paul? So many unique differences from fading.
Lovely guitar Bob. Hope that finger heals quickly. Something that's always puzzled me about Les Paul from the vintage era ('58-'60) is that they weren't all that old when the guys who made them famous (Clapton, Page, Greeny etc) were playing them in the late 60s. Generally speaking, wooden instruments improve with age provided they are properly looked after for all the reasons you state. So a '58 Les Paul probably sounds quite different in 2020 than it did in 1965. What do you think?
Very good. And it’s always beautiful to see a man talking about a ‘dream’ turned into reality in his life, as it was having a Burst for you. I got a ‘98 LP, he sounds GREAT. But frets are starting to reach the limit and I don’t want to refret, I’d like to invert the magnet too for the OOP but i prefer to mantain full stock the guitar ‘cause it’s a gift of a late person. So I’m looking to add another guitar and, let’s put it this way, given that i don’t like the BILLIONS of models and the era Gibson has fallen into in the last 20 years, i ideally jumped the ‘USA’ range and I was thinking of buying a Custom Shop ‘58 (or ‘59). I Miss the days in which you had the studio, the standard and the Custom, and they already were high level instruments (which I don’t think I can say the same for the last 20 year production). Of course... given the fact the you have to play the guitars because every guitar is different, I’ve heard original Burst that sounded nothing special, and it’s the same (with an obviously worst and far average) for the new instruments. Every time you see comparison between original and reissues there’s some interested guy/endorser around, so maybe I can trust your opinion about reissues more 😁 Now the problem is... I can’t afford an original Burst 😂 Ps as I said in another comment it’d be great talking about the drying/crystallization of the wood and how this change the tone, even my guitar feels a little ‘opened’ and ‘brighter’ after 23 years.
That's a beauty! of you don't need me telling you, haha! Just stumbled on the channel, thanks! I've smashed all the smashers! Salutations from dark, foggy and ghostly quiet Ireland! ☘️☮️🤘🏽🤠👍🏽☮️☘️
I could listen to people like Bob and joe bonamassa all day, genuine passion and knowledge for the instruments they own, who would the trolls rather have the guitars, guys like bob or some collector who has them in a vault never playing them
03:24 - I was just about to type a message regarding the under-rated Clem Clemson! His playing on ‘Downhill and Shadows’ by Colosseum is nothing short of amazing. Hands-down some of the tastiest electric blues guitar I’ve ever heard. Tone to die for. (I believe he’s playing a gold-top on that one.)
I absolutely love your posts (stories and history) and frankly don't care who you are, that's in a good way 😁I think most of the trolls are referring to doc/dentists that don't play their instruments. We've all heard you, and you can play! God bless and stay healthy 🙏
A good looking '58 Bob, a good tale with it and you're such a good player yourself, cheers.
Bob is a real musician. People like him DO deserve to own a burst, as well as you Ramon.
I wouldn't waste a second thinking about qualified ownership. You searched, scraped and purchased it. You deserve it as much as anyone. Keep the Paul alive!

Thanks so much for the kind way you present. I have a 2016 Traditional SB, I can still dream!

Always a good day when Bob puts a video out.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video, great to hear the story of the search for your dream guitar.
Great words. Honest and open. Thanks and take care!
anyone who is hating on you for "hoarding" guitars in just jealous. I admire you dedication to your goal, its something that a lot of people lack nowadays and instead decide to hate on those who do have it.
Great story telling and and amazingly beautiful guitar ... great video !
Hoard all you want! As long as the guitars are taken care of and played. And shared with us : ) Stay safe Bob.
The guitar is great, but I really enjoy the mentions of the lesser-known players! It's always great to have music worth tracking down. Thank you!
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos - Throughly enjoyable.
You are the kind of person who should own this type of instrument. Too many of these go into vaults with 100 plus guitar collections, never again to see the light of day. I’m sure the people worth knowing would never begrudge your success surrounding your passion; great story.
Thoroughly enjoyed your matter of fact conversation of owning a vintage Les Paul many can only dream of. Hope it gives you many years more of joy! Stay safe
Listen. I love your passion. Thank you for your stories.

Thank you Bob i adore that guitar and your posts

Thank you Bob for sharing during this difficult time.
Bob, thank you, thank you, thank you. This was excellent. Looking forward to many more videos from you.

Fantastic video!! Thank you for sharing and keep enjoying your exquisite guitar!

Interesting Video and very good choice of recordings. Thanks and greetz ✌🏼

I know Bob owns some fine examples of ES-335's, but I'd love to see his collection of Les Paul Jr's, and SG's, the more affordable line of Gibsons for aspiring musicians without a suitcase filled with quids.

Bob, I could listen to you for hours. Even if I am not even in my thirties, I also share the same passion that you have for the music and specially for the golden era you mention. It has been as well a dream for me, since I realized about the existance of these almost mythical instruments, to not even own, but to have the chance to play one. Hopefully it would be possible one day, but here in Spain the chances are unfortunately minimal. As far as I know there is only a burst in Spain, one of the four lefties burst that were produced in this era, but that's all.
Hopefully one day it will happen. Have good recovery and have fun with the slide.
Ramon, tu canal es increíble, no dejo de ver videos una y otra vez. Sigue así!
Thanks! Very interesting. And beautiful guitar. I have to settle for my reissue 58, but I like it a lot.
Great Video Bob thanks for sharing
That's a beautiful burst. Thanks for sharing your story and your passion for music and guitars.
What a wonderful guitar. Great video Bob, hope your finger is on the mend soon.
I am your age. Don’t apologize. Good for you. Great guitar. Great planning. Smart man. Period. Trolls be damned. Love your channel.
Incredible instrument Bob and if anyone deserves it…
happy healing!
No no no sir. You are a true player. You give that instrument the play time it deserves. And I agree with you. Anyone can own one. It's just nice when theyre not sitting in a glass case and only being looked at as an investment. Thanks for sharing.
OH MAN! How fantastic is that...something I will probably never know personally
She’s gorgeous. Enjoy your blessings, my friend.
Thanks for showing us that wonderful guitar,
I really appreciate your honesty , so sorry about your finger I hope it heals up soon so you can get back to it. Thanks so much for this video Bob.
Very welcome
Never apologize for obtaining your goals. Good for you. I’m on the same journey. To hell with people who talk but won’t do what’s necessary to achieve.
You are amazing Bob !
Your LP is gorgeous looks brand new.
it has look after you well as you have looked after it well...thank you for the video enjoyed it !

Stay safe and take care of this beauty, it's really a dream guitar, Cheers !!
Very informative Bob.
Very nice, Kossoff has always been the ultimate Les Paul slinger to me...only ever needed one note to slice through your heart and soul, an innate ability that eludes most other players.

Wow what a great looking LP
Fantastic video
Good for you. You earned it
Excellent video Bob
It has a proper and deserved home .. anyone who appreciates and loves a guitar is an appropriate owner . Get that finger healed up !
You earned it, you deserve it. Enjoy it.
Stay safe Bob. Regards from Texas.
I enjoyed that very much. Thank you!

100 yr old air dried wood was used in 59.
That’s not available to Gibson these days
Got the Blues Power album Bob, a great album.
I really like your honesty/outlook.....and of course your guitar lol
I can’t afford an original Burst 😂
Ps as I said in another comment it’d be great talking about the drying/crystallization of the wood and how this change the tone, even my guitar feels a little ‘opened’ and ‘brighter’ after 23 years.
That's a beauty! of you don't need me telling you, haha! Just stumbled on the channel, thanks! I've smashed all the smashers! Salutations from dark, foggy and ghostly quiet Ireland! ☘️☮️🤘🏽🤠👍🏽☮️☘️
Very interesting, thank you.
