    I used to sleep in the floor in a Japanese futon for years while I lived in the UK. Now that I sleep in a bed I miss it. The flexibility of having the floor space to do yoga and transform the bedroom as i want is so good. You should consider tatamis for warmth and higiene ❤

    • @minimalismandmore
      @minimalismandmore  9 месяцев назад +7

      I have ordered tatami mats to go on the low base for that very reason! 🤞🏻they help with warmth, noise and hygiene 🩷 Will you ever go back to floor sleeping do you think?

    Awesome. 4-5 years after beginning floor sleeping i couldnt imagine going back. Although for travel i slept in a bed i was ready to return to the floor and i cant tell you how much i appreciate the freedom and ability to change if necessary

      Exactly this! I never sleep well when I'm away from home and can't wait to return to my mattress topper as I now find traditional mattresses really uncomfortable

    So good to see other floor sleepers and British minimalists! Weve had a futon mattress, so slightly thicker, for 12 years. We replaced the original one a couple years ago, never had mould problems. We just have it directly on the carpet. I remove the duvet and pillows in the morning and flip it in half, altering the direction each day so as to let the bottom of it air out, then once a week after I strip the bedding I roll it up. I cannot imagine having a 'normal' bed again at this point.

      That's so great to hear your experience of floor sleeping, especially being in the UK and having carpet 🙂 I was so worried about mould but never saw any either

    I sleep on a mattress topper and wouldnt fo back to a big heavy mattress. For warmth i read about placing a thermal backed curtain underneath your mattress/topper. It made all the difference. Cosy in winter. I leave it there all year round. Im thoroughly enjoying your videos.

    Love the idea of this . Unfortunately at my age of 70 getting up from the floor is a bit tricky . Hmmm perhaps its time to take a serious look at some of those stretching and balance exercises i see on so many vlogs !

    • @minimalismandmore
      @minimalismandmore  9 месяцев назад +1

      I will continue to have a low bed for as long as I'm able but definitely comfort is a huge factor, I may have to transition to a normal bed eventually. I will be a nightmare if I ever went in a retirement home, they would come in and find me on the floor every morning and panic thinking I'd fallen out of bed! 🤣🤭

    • @timalart
      @timalart 8 месяцев назад +4

      To get accustomed to rise from the floor - so also from your bed - you could try floor sitting, even for 15 minutes a day. Your legs will become stronger, mobility increases, but, in fact, it's not for everybody. I'm 62 and sit on the floor ( furniture free) and sleep on the floor. I would recommend this as a way of life when it comes to flexibility, mobility and health for older people

    I've been floor sleeping for 4 year. I don't have a tatami platform bed but use a foldable tatami mat which you still can get out the way, use it as a screen etc.

    • @minimalismandmore
      @minimalismandmore  9 месяцев назад +1

      I did look at those and was very tempted but wasn't sure if they would be warm enough and help with the noise levels in the property I'm in now. That's great you can also use them as screens 🩷

    I slept on the floor downstairs over the summer when it was too hot to be upstairs. I actually enjoyed it a lot! I used a king sized duvet folded into thirds as a mattress, which was perfect depth for me.
    I felt that my thighs got stronger with the getting up and down from the floor, and I slept really well.
    I only went back to bed when my husband kept asking when I planned to come back to our bed.

    • @minimalismandmore

    After our last child left home, we moved up to the big attic room we have, which has ceilings that slope down to about 15" above the (laminate) floor, so it's not easy to find a bed that would fit under the eaves. I also hate vacuuming under beds, as so much dust accumulates; I don't like underbed storage, either, for the same reason, though in our smaller downstairs room I do have some lidded tubs that are easy to slide out from under the guest bed for vacuuming. My solution was to get the cheapest Ikea foam mattresses, which I love. Initially we had them on a rug and I found them very comfortable. At one point I did feel it in my hips and solved the problem by layering a second thin foam mattress over the top, as it was cheaper than a topper, and we also took the rug away from under them. Every time I change the sheets I turn and flip the mattresses so they are well-aired, and we have the windows open for most of the year, yes, even in winter. It's a flexible solution, as if one of my grandchildren wants to sleep over, I can just slide one of the mattresses out, or I can offer guests 2 separate stacked "beds" if it's not a couple. At this stage my hips don't seem to mind sleeping on a single mattress, but we've stuck with what is essentially 4 single mattress stacked 2/2. They are held together by a fitted jersey sheet and we find we disturb each other less by not having a double width, bulky mattress. If we slept in the smaller room, we only have room for a small double (4'6" or 140 cm) and this way we have almost 6' (180 cm) width. We did that for years so enjoy the luxury of more room now! The attic room covers the whole area of the house and has other uses for hobbies and leisure, but we don't mind people seeing where we sleep and don't really care what they might think or say (so far nobody has been rude lol). I do quickly make the bed once it's aired, so it's always presentable, it's just 2 duvets to smooth over. My husband occasionally grumbles or goes downstairs halfway through the night if he can't sleep, but on the whole, I think we're both comfortable with this solution as long as we are mobile, so hopefully a good few years yet.

    • @minimalismandmore
      @minimalismandmore  5 месяцев назад +1

      That is amazing that you have found such a good solution for you 🩷 It does take some getting used to (I could feel it in my shoulders when I 1st started when I turned onto my side) but I soon got used to it and now can't sleep on a normal mattress! I think to live any way that is different to society norms you have to be able to not care what people think or say but like yourself, most people were curious about it but not rude. If I ever start dating, I'll need separate beds as I can't share mine no matter what size it is 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️

    I don't get the connection between bedside tables and lamps though, to me they have nothing to do with each other. I need a small lamp by the bed for reading, since I don't want to do that with the ceiling light on at night, too bright and not relaxing. I also don't like to use my phone in the dark with no other source of light because of the contrast it causes. Do you never read in bed, or do something else that requires a small/less bright lamp?

    Even with a bed frame, but nothing else, people have thought it wasn't my 'real' home or I just moved in, was moving out or poor. Tbh, even if I was in poverty, I would still keep it this simple, expect it would be second hand, probably brown or mismatched furniture and more library books, clothes and toys that I have decluttered in the last six months. Even then though, it still would be less.

    For the person who commented it was like a prison cell and asked why have it like this as minimalism can be homely, but then deleted their comment, I didn't take offense and here is my response in the hope that you see it:
    Minimalism is different for every person and what is homely to one person is cluttered to another and what is someone's prison cell is another person's sanctuary 🩷 For me the "why" is it's calm and peaceful to me, no visual distraction and easy to clean. As I mentioned I sleep better and I just don't *need* anything else. And if I don't need it, I don't want it 🤷‍♀️👍🏻

      I once was hospitalised for 6 months in a mental health ward. I had a bed, a chair and shelving. The blanket and towel option really sucked [safety over comfort] and sharing a washing machine is never fun. However, despite being poorly, once I was allowed to charge my phone in my room and had my own shower/sink/toilet and allowed to leave the ward whenever I wanted, it was bizarrely the most freedom [free from responsibilities, cleaning and cooking] I ever felt. I like the taste of hospital food and loved having an excuse to eat a sponge and custard everyday. So to some, even a prison or hospital room can be 'home'. Although, quite a lot of people in cells or wards fill the walls and shelves with as much as they can too lol.

    We slept for years on a futon on the floor. But now at 71, it's just not possible to get up from the floor. Also, we did have a mold issue under the futon partly because the under of our house is not insulated so thus the cold comes up and meets the warm bed.
