    Author did a huge mistake in that project: if your sensor working contitiosly it turns into accumulator contacts and will produce dangerous salts in the ground. Please insert 1 hour delay between reading sensor data in your firmware. Best regards

      Is this kind of sensor can be reliable after one year or more? I would use insulated version.

    • @Mr_ToR
      @Mr_ToR Год назад +6

      You're right. This sensor is resistance based. It quickly corrodes and self distructs. You need capacitance based sensor. Capacitance based sensor looks similar but it is isolated and does not need direct contact with soil to work. Since capacitance is depentant to the dielectric constant and dielectric constant changes with water content (or whatever else too actually), you can measure change in water content. Since there is no contact it never corrodes. There are water level sensors that detects the presence of water from outside of your plastic or glass container which uses the same concept. They are also great for water tank, aquarium, hyroponics, aquaponics etc automation. I'm using them in my water plant tank automation in my balcony to automatically top off the water level.

    Why is nobody talking about how you drilled perfectly straight through like 150-200mm of wood?! That's insane !

    • @technics6215
      @technics6215 Год назад

      Actually this is not that hard if you have some experience with drilling. And this is not wood, it is kind of chipboard or fiberboard. Many boards like this are more dense on the surfaces and less dense in the middle core so the drill wants to go in the middle.

    • @xXBaZzAXxGaming
      @xXBaZzAXxGaming Год назад

      Still impressive to make the two holes meet perfectly in the middle no matter the material.

      You can use capacitve sensor instead, that would last for years.

    • @PenguinDIY
      @PenguinDIY  2 года назад +1

      no problem. You can use graphite inside the pen battery, which is resistant to corrosion inside the soil.

    • @shaynegadsden

      How would it rust the probes aren't iron they are tinned copper

    • @electronron1
      @electronron1 2 года назад

      @@mohammadrezamim272 I agree, but the inexpensive ones need to be conformal coated or the circuit board will become saturated and quit working. I've heard that finger nail polish works as a conformal coating but the sensor should be cleaned and re-coated every few years. I think the sensors will work if inserted in a plastic bag which may be even better than a conformal coating.

    This is done brilliantly 🥰. Love the way you shared every part of your project. You even showed the sandblasting of the glass below. I would add a single observation: if the sensor fails the water will keep running until the motor fails or you are left without water in the container. Is there a fail safe for this?

    • @PenguinDIY
      @PenguinDIY  2 года назад +2

      You can set a timer for the motor so that when it is connected, for example, it will be on for 20 seconds. But in order to make the video not too complicated, I omitted it.

    So, this is a good project. But if your looking for accuracy and efficiency, it isn't a good one at all. Why? Coz one sensor on the top isn't an accurate measure of the moisture content in the soil. And someone here was pointing out about salts? I'm not sure what you mean by that.
