@@iago110 Wouldn't necessarily have to. The Warp defies logic, and the Hive Mind is effectively a warp entity in its own right. If memory server the scythes no longer have any firstborn left as per what happened in the Cawl book Great Work and their chapter master was pretty happy that they got primaris to start over so the old guard can die off so chapter can start from clean slate. Plus it explained how they were destroyed by the nids so utterly and I found that very intrigueing
This may seem a bit out there but in all honesty I feel like the 10th Edition reveals would've been better from a narrative perspective if they starred the Scythes over the Ultramarines. A fleet-based chapter responding to an entirely new hive-fleet tendril and being wiped out to a man defending Ograhm in a last stand would've been a perfect way to show the weary old guard dying in a final blaze of glory and joining their brothers from centuries before.
I think that a Sythes last stand might be better as a major event, rather than the reveal. Ograhm was a narrative campaign reveal, where Ultramarines or Tyranids could have won based on player victories on either end. In that case, I actually think it was more important to have the Ultramarines, as GW showed they were willing to let their poster boys lose when the numbers didn't go their way. Also, if the old Sythes had been wiped out, I feel some firstborn players would have seen it as further steps of GW aggressively phasing out old marines.
It’s a very personal opinion thing, but these guys to me are Ultramarines. Almost everything about them is OOC for both Dantioch and his understanding of his legion’s spirit imo.
@GaIvatr0n actually they are chimeric, meaning their geneseed is a hybrid. A GW enployee who originally made the chapter said thart one of the sources of the geneseed is Iron Warrior. We don't know what it is mixed with. World Eater is a popular guess
How exactly do the Scythes bear the mask of Barbaros Dantioch? I thought it was the Silver Skulls who were Iron Warrior successors who bore Dantioch's mask. It appears to be their chapter symbol.
I believe they (the scythes of the emperor) had his ACTUAL mask. Not just a symbol of it. If I remember right one of their members (I think actually their chapter master) was titled as the Warden of the Pharos. And the Warden wears Dantioch's mask itself.
From what I recall Dantioch wasn't the only loyalist Iron Warrior that was considered an "honorary" Ultramarine during the Horus Heresy. Frankly I could see both the Scythes and the Silver Skulls being successors of loyalists Iron Warriors with some left on Pharos to guard it as the Scythes while the others were split off to form the progenitors of the Silver Skulls.
They are one of the best chapters and very underrated, they are brave warriors as any space marine chapter but also very reasonable and nice to civilians like Salamanders, but I like their inter rank dynamics more they treat each other like family unlike Salamanders who have this dark xenophobic undertone, perhaps on purpose to show that there are dark things even in the nicest chapters. I hope primaris marines will take their role seriously and honor the sacrifices their predecessors have made and continue their work with honor and bravery.
Surely there are pictographs and paintings or maybe video records of life on Solace to show the new primaris Scythes so that they can at least try to appreciate their older brothers' plight?
Okay so I'm not sure if you've read the Belisarius Cawl novel but A. the Pharos is confirmed to be a Necron device, as there were C'tan shards inside it. B. the remaining first born marines died in that novel and the Primaris are now in effectively total control. C. Dantioch's legacy is known to the Scythes, though they don't actually know him by name, they know that a loyalist of the traitor legions died to save Sotha. In terms of loyalist Iron Warriors, we know for a fact that the Minotaurs are 4th Legion gene-stock, and we also know of Kyr Vhalen and his warriors who survived the Heresy and likely founded a successor chapter, along with Narik Dreygur who was a traitor but then took his company and worked alongside the Salamanders Moral of the story? Perturabo was a colossal prick to work for
None of these had anything do with purtirabo being a prick Dreygur turned loyal because the alpha legion were pricks not purtirabo he literaly was stated to be sick of the alpha legion and betrayed them to the salamnders after they used his team as a decoy
And vhalen was just an idiot and no they didnt foujd a sucessor chaoter its outright stated he was never found he and the mechanicum he saved vanished never to be recorded ever again 8n imperial record even the mechanicum priests were never seen again even if vhalen formed a chapter and was classified those priests would of been recorded at some point later but they were not meaning he never returned to the imperium not to mention he didnt willingly betray his legion he didnt even kn9w porturabo went traitor
@TheBoneZone40k when ever you talk about such chapters with "curious" backgrounds, I always think it important to acknowledge that; the Ultramarines and Imperial Fists are the two Legions suspected of taking in the survivors of the two purged lost legions 2ed and 11th. and with the added idea that there were other loyalist survivors from traitor legions, who might have been secretly folded back into those two legion at the end of the Horus Heresy, before the 2ed founding.. all that makes the "suspect" chapters made from Ultramarines and Imperial Fists very interesting to speculate about...
Well done on not going for the obvious Iron Warriors loyalists in the Minotaurs or Silver Skulls. Nice call and interesting spotlight on an oft overlooked chapter.
In the Devestation of Baal it was highlighted that The Scuthes were infiltrated by Genestealers and they caused massive holes in the defenses of the planet, leading to the death of the planet
I think the chapter is a great storytelling opportunity. Just as you said, with first born veterans having to train and get used to the fact that their chapter will now be full of recruits who knew nothing of the home world they spent their entire existence defending. I think it would be a really interesting story to see it from a recruit's perspective. This man who wants to honor the first born marines that came before him, and who wants to fight in the honor of a planet that meant so much to his veteran brothers and chapter, but he doesn't quite know how to, because he never did know these men or know this planet. I think the chapter becoming the reapers of Tyranids would be an interesting evolution for them. If Tyranids are besieging a world, you know the Scythes are on their way. (Or not because the Tyranids are attacking a lot of worlds at the esame time but you know what I mean.)
