being a fan of gizzard for so long you really get to see how far Cavs has gotten in his drumming skills, especially when you release albums ranging from thrash metal to light funky jazz
What's impressive to me as someone who plays drums a bit is how calm and relax he his on the kit. It's all in the wrists and elbows. He doesn't waste energy by doing big moves and being flashy. He play 3 hours + marathon shows with big metal and complex jazzy tracks like nothing. Probably the most versatile drummer right now in the game.
Might be late if you want to be the next drummer of a global band but not late if you want to jam and have fun. Start with the basics, learn how to count music and read music and all that stuff too because just learning by ear is not ideal.
Saw them the other night, venue was ruthlessly muggy and Cav's was on point the whole time. Dripping tap straight into magma to close the set, don't know how he does it!
When I first heard Changes, and heard Cavs laying down that Fool in the Rain groove - I was so happy! He must have been so psyched to be able to play that and have it work! Great homage to Bonzo.
Cavs absolutely stands out as that "marathon" drummer that can just hold his shit down and silently flow + communicate with KGLW group for 3+ hour sets - he's got such a calm head behind all that BLBLBLBLBLWLWBLWLWLBLBLBL yknow? he makes it look easy. I've played drums for 10 years, and when I got into Gizz years ago, Robot Stop was my "keep up" practice piece. That "I wanna play this without dragging" piece. That hi-hat tempo strained me then, now it doesnt. I also like to challenge myself to play along to the entirety of I'm In Your Mind Fuzz. Fun groove, few variations, but 20-25 mins in, those forearms will start to burn, i'll tell ya. Cavs is machine. HAIL.
"Started young, around 16" Gives me fuckin inspiration Me and cavs have had a very similar upbringing to drumming. I started around the same time. And for whatever reason, found buddy rich and all that jazz, blew me away!! Yeah and our styles are absolutely mimicked. And I discovered king gizz late, at around 22. Anyways don't know if anyone cares!! Cheers!!!
Great drummer. Can lay down a relatively straightforward groove and make it sound like a million bucks, or completely throw you for a loop with some of his odd meter stuff.
Black Midi's drummer started earlier at around 12 - 13. But yeah, most good players out there starts young since we tend to learn something easier and better when we're young.
Very typical. I don't get why this is shocking to people. I started at 12 or 13 and I was the first one out of any of us that got a drum kit. Not to mention some people are kind of naturally able to pick up the rhythm and others just aren't. Lots of variables.

It's crazy to think how much better he's gotten from the time this video came out to NOW.
Truly one of the best of our time.

Judging by his drum solos I just knew Bonham was a huge influence and here he confirmed it. This guy is an amazing drummer.
"I was a late starter at 16"
- me, starting drumming in my late 30s 😂
same
You and I both my dude! 😂

Such an amazing artist, and he’s right, they sound better than any brand out there

Well he said he started late at 16. Regardless, it's never too late to start. I started when I was 12-13 and now I've got 22 years under my belt.
Wow to hear him like confirm his drumming influences is just great and really interesting I love all the people he cited
Cavs is one of drummers of al time
Shoutout albert time
Been into Gizz a couple of years I love almost everything they do. And anyone who loves Art Blakey is alright in my book.
cool man its hard to keep a band together especially with so many members..hope they can keep it going forever

this performance of Ice V and Magma?
jazzy afrobeat?! Have they released that one, yet?
Ice death
We need King Gizzard’s take on afrobeat
That china sounds so sexy. It gets me every time. Love you Cavs!!!!!
Cavs and Zach Hill are my two fav (modern) drummers, very different styles but they blend together well
CAVS CAVS CAVS
So now I can't decide between a Bliss or Energy series ride... any advice? (I don't play any sort of jazz, just play heavier garage punk kinda stuff)
Energy for sure
What's the main ride he's playing?
21" Energy Ride
Lmao nice video
Started at 16? Wtf
I mean, that's a fairly normal age to start at if anything. Maybe a smidge older than normal but nothing out of the ordinary

Pretty bummed Im just getting my start at 23 but I guess Ive always wanted to be a drummer since I was 16… so maybe that counts? lol
I just hope he stays with the company.
