Holy- this just randomly popped in my head, I can’t believe I found it! I remember watching this in music class around 12 years ago! It’s crazy that this remained such a vivid memory for me, lol
I watched it when it premiered on HBO. Never knew how television spoiled I was till getting older. I love the rhythm and beats, I practically live life in counts of 4x4. I will leave this food for thought while on the topic of TV. Why do you think it's called television programming?
Same as well! I remember watching the sewer part of this video whenever I was in the first grade. Crazy I found it after 14 years by searching band playing in sewer after this popped up in my head.
I remember watching this in elementary school music class. Now, I still do music, and I still remember much of this video. One of my clearest memories of this was of the broom breaking, and it's nice to see this again after so many years.
Me as well, it took me forever to find it cause it's been so long I forget about it. Mr. John I think was his name, he liked Van Halen too, had a cool guitar just like him.
This has always been some of the most artistic forms of expression that I've ever seen. The synchronization is incredible. Can you imagine if just one person was so much as an 8th of a second off? There's also no outtakes so it's not like they can edit anything out. This is just amazing. Love it.
There's a making of this floating around somewhere. Some of the skits took as many as 100 takes before they got it right, the worst being the kitchen scene.
We did jt, too. Not with my ordinary class, but with all the outcasts of our school with whom we were meeting every break in our nerd bunker with the coolest teacher ever! Literally saved my ads that year

I always watched clips of Stomp with my dad when I was little. We actually got to see them perform live about 2 years ago and it was just, if not more, amazing than ever :)
THEY STILL FUCKIN PERFORM?!?! Do you know if it's all the original performers? I remember watchin these gottdamn Legends both on video in music class and beyond luckily once live over 20 years ago
I got to see them live (like 10 or 11 years ago) and I can attest that EVEN WITHOUT EDITING AND JUMP CUTS, they have inhuman rhythm and musicality. I remember being worried before the show that they wouldn't be as perfect as they were in the video, but no, they were crazy, crazy good.
The HOURS that these crews must put in for these concerts.... Testing (probably) hundreds of percussive items in the real world to determine if a sound will work; composing the 'songs'; putting those songs to choreography to also make them visually entertaining and, last but certainly not least - the practice to get these routines down perfect. My hats off to all the groups in the Stomp universe; I NEVER get tired of watching you.
It's been about 16 years since I last saw this, but I've seen it so many times that it feels like yesterday. Whenever Mrs. Powers didn't have the stamina needed to listen to a bunch of kids blow on their recorders for 50 minutes or sing corny songs about how everybody is special (so about once a week), she'd wheel out that tiny little standard TV with the built-in VCR in front of my class of 30 all sitting Indian-style (do they still use that term nowadays?) on little carpet squares, everybody leaning forward to see the screen. This was always the video she played. I hope they still show this to kids, because it was the only video that managed to totally shut us up.
Saw these guys live back in 1998 when they came thru Ft Worth Texas. I saw this same show on HBO in 1997. Then searched and searched until I saw they were finally coming to town. Love them then, love them now.
Holy shit, in 5th grade I was in a band class and our teacher showed us this video. I really liked it but never had the chance to find out what video it was and have been looking for it ever since. Now 7 years later I've some how found the video!
My son told me that my tow truck was in a video they saw in Music class in school... What do you know... here it is!! Great group!! Glad to see some of the truck's life before I got it... Still running strong!!
I remember commenting to my mother that I wanted to do this, someday, and she told me that this took a LOT of practice and work, and not a lot of people could make it. Flash forward to the RUclips era, and there’s TONS of creators and channels who do things like this all the time, in so many different ways, and we LOVE IT. I’m so happy that they’re still able to thrive, and that human creativity is just this weird.
I watched this in an elementary music class and I remember I was hooked by the star and never lost interest. This movie was so important to me as a child because I used to make up beats with random things and this showed me I wasn't alone. It also help form my opinion that music is something born into us. Humans are born with some primal urge to make or enjoy music. It's something we just feel inside of us. The more primal and raw the sound the more we want to move with it.
I always liked this in music class - there was even another film where someone (don't remember who) interviews the people in the broom segment. I actually have a habit for drumming on random things when I'm bored standing around, which is why I wasn't allowed to see this when I was five or I would've gone crazy with drumming.
As a kid, this is used as a way to help you understand just how many places you can find music if you just look. But coming back to it as an adult really highlights how much musical genius and talent had to go into every single aspect of every song made in this program. The sewer song I find myself particularly impressed with given the lengths the inspiration behind an idea like that must have taken them to figure out the different ways you can mess with the dynamics of a rhythm just by using water submersion to adjust the pitch of the sound you're making. Just amazing
I remember watching this in... middle school! Not elementary school like practically everyone else... although we did watch cool videos in elementary school music class, too!
I would definitely listen to this than music nowadays. Most songs now are about love and stuff. Music like this is fun and upbeat. I wish I could have seen these guys live but pretty sure I was a negative number😂
If there is one thing ALL human cultures share on our precious planet it's percussive rhythm. Be it drums, hubcaps, broom sticks, tongue clicks, or just our hands and feet, we ALL share this in our world. All of us. Other musical instruments come and go but percussive beats, yeah, that's universal.

That’s so funny, I never saw this in school but my parents recorded it for me and I watched it all the time growing up
I watched it when it premiered on HBO. Never knew how television spoiled I was till getting older. I love the rhythm and beats, I practically live life in counts of 4x4.
I will leave this food for thought while on the topic of TV. Why do you think it's called television programming?

That idea is crazy.
Now that's art!
Aaron Creagh for real.
I actually do that everyday
i mean that's what street artists do.

What is absolutely incredible is watching their live shows. 90 minutes non-stop - it's truly inspirational!

After so many years ago, like a lot of people. One of the only movies I remember clearly, and came back to watch it again after 10 plus years.

I vividly remember watching this while I was in 1st grade, I'm in 12th now so crazy
I remember watching this in 5th grade music class, during a, "free day," back in either late 2002 or early 2003.
Me not in music class being forced to watch this masterpiece

Also the woman yelling, "ordering!" In the kitchen scene.

Anybody else just go completely feral when he starts in on the washer board in the opening scene ?
Probably one of the most unsanitary kitchens in the world. I wouldn't go there for the food. Just the "noise". :-)
You'd be amazed with some of the kitchens, well, more like appalled. Look at Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares.
now i want gordon to review stomp's kitchen
Sincerely enjoyed this.
To this day, the rhythm from the card game is still stuck in my head.
"A Limey with rhythm". That line always cracks me up.
