Paper Towel Holder

  • I had made a desk for my 6 year old son. The desk had a back shelf supported by a row of arches cut from English walnut. In this project, I use the leftover cutouts from these arches to make the sides of a paper towel holder. The two sides are connected by two strips of black walnut which also hold the piece to the underside of the kitchen cabinet. The walnut strips and sides are attached together with a dovetail joint. I also use a scrap piece of black walnut for the axle to hold the paper towels between the two sides. I turn the axle on the lathe to make a tenon at each end to fit into a round hole in each of the sides. This helps hold the axle in place. I also turn a wide channel between the tenons on the axle to hold the paper towel in place.

    I've avoided this video for so long bc I thought a simple paper towel holder would be utterly boring. I was pleasantly surprised. Very interesting to see (and hear) your thought process. Such a simple item, but a complex process. Thanks!

    How do you prepare your beeswax/linseed oil finish? I have never heard of that before you mentioned it, but it seems to have such a soft and warm quality.

    ah cmon! Cloth is as biodegradable than paper towel. Just takes a little bit lonjger. Are you aware of all the energy used in the process of cutting down, transporting it to the factory, packing it, transporting it to the selling point, the consumer transporting it to its house, then. The cloth is bought once and can be used for decades if taken care of. The paper towel has a useless pakacking that will only get wasted. Do the math. The cloth wins, by alot.

  • @1PastorMike
    @1PastorMike 11 лет назад

    First, I don't disagree that many of us are far to wasteful when it comes to the products we use, and paper towel is one thing that many people use too wastefully, so I agree with you on that point.
    Second, most of the "tree farms" were planted when wood product companies began to realize they could not continue what had been standard practice in many parts of the world.
    Lastly, import regulations make it nearly impossible for the US to be responsible for continuing harvest of virgin forests.

  • @brakiska
    @brakiska 11 лет назад

    We had to destroy tons of forests, precious biodiversity, to be able to make those tree farms. Yet, we are still cutting more and more of the last virgin forests around the world. Everything you do daily has a huge impact. we are now 6 billions, time to wake up and realize that.
    I stand my point, we ought to reduce our footprint and paper towels are a good start. Now for some finishing process I understand it is critical to have a clean piece of towel. Now dry you hands another way ..

  • @brakiska
    @brakiska 11 лет назад

    Where I'm from we use hydroelectricity. There are tons of alternative much more sustainable energy source than charcoal, coal and nuclear. Now, going with your logic, everything is, which is somehow true. But if we can, wouldn't we want to at least reduce the waste we use? Trees are renewable in theory, but barely applied in today's world, due to excess demand from rich countries, a.k.a. us. I love this guys' videos and knowing he has influence, which could be used for more practical projects.

  • @brakiska
    @brakiska 11 лет назад

    Indeed it has. Once. If the cloth is used for several years, imagine how many paper towels you actually use. In the end the cloth wins, period : )

    This looks like a perfect solution for a crappy plastic towel holder I have in-place in a high-traffic laundry / garage-to-house entrance room. The one challenge with that towel holder is that there is no friction keeping the roll from spinning rapidly with a one-handed tug and dispensing many more towels than desired.
    As a result, I'm thinking that a gently sprung, friction inducing "widget" against the spindle or against the towels themselves might be a useful additional element. Thoughts?

    I made something similar (not so elegant of course), and found the axel was so slippery that the roll tended to continue spinning and unroll itself. I put a couple of heavy rubber bands (from broccoli from the supermarket) on the axel and it then handled perfectly.

    I don't know if you have ever tried this trick; but when I have two sides that need to look Identical and are more than just straight cuts, like curves, I hot glue them together. Then I can cut and sand them at the same rate and they will be identical. I have used double stick tape as well with the same outcome.

    Great video Frank and a very nice idea with the washers to stop the rail from dropping. but i really have to ask, how long it took to make the dovetails?
