Thinking of travelling to or from the UK with your pet? Please check out the links in the description for up-to-date procedures for your country. If you have a question about the price or conditions for a ferry operator, there are links to their websites too. Have you taken your pet abroad from the UK? If so, please let everyone know in the comments below. Bon voyage à tous!
Thank you for the info. Hope it's okay to ask. Don't suppose you'd happen to know how this process would work for farm animals? I'm looking to ideally move out to Tenerife on a small farm and there are a much wider range of breeds of cows as pets in the UK. Ive lived in the UK all my life but was wondering if there was a different procedure for moving calves or young cows as pets to Tenerife etc. Thank you
Brilliant to see a return to the older style videos... really enjoyed it, I've been going abroad with my dog for a few years, after you've done it once you'll wonder what all the fuss was about, its really very easy if you follow the simple tips you spoken about here.. Great to see you looking so well. Stay safe!
Thank you so much for this video. We take delivery of our first camper van tomorrow and we can’t wait to take our terriers to Europe. Seems it’s way easier than we had anticipated.
Thanks for this. your more knowledgable than our vets who gave our dog a rabies injection and did not know about how many days about bringing him back in to country. Or going out! Gave me a bit of paper of Defra and said you be got about 15 options as he coukdnt get through! WOW so thanks this was clear and concise!
Hi Andrew Very useful video. Just a quick story about an Australian traveller traveling to Poole from Cherbourg. He a current pet passport but did not know about the Tape Worm tablet. He had to get an emergency Vet out, €90 and stay in a hotel overnight. The French authorities wouldn’t let him sail. He was not happy. Glad you are safely home. Cheers Keith
But KUDOS to you Keith for doing the right thing. Animal shelters near the channel ports are (or at least were) full of abandoned dogs when owners just left them behind rather than spend the money on the hotel and a new sailing. So you may not be happy - but you are an amazing man! And that is worth way more than €90.
We are about to enter the camper van world & its way of life We found your videos very good and inspirational with yourself and another couple the SUMMERS dog on board as well, really packed with real life what to do ,what not to do! once we have got as much info advice and learnt about the pitfalls we are going to drive to our house in Spain and start to criss cross that beautiful country stopping off on and off grid as we go. Mr Buff n Lady Mc Puffa 🇪🇸
Very interesting discussion. It was quite clear that this talk of International travel had Dougal extremely excited. His anticipation was building to a crescendo toward the end, as two other viewers have pointed out.
A very informative video. I would also advise everyone taking a pet abroad to double or even treble check that the chip code number matches the chip code number written on the pet passport. We even second time to our vets, checked the numbers matched . Arrived at Portsmouth ferry port to board and couldn't board as the numbers didn't match by one 9 !!!. So please check.
Hello again Andrew. It wasn’t me I was a fellow traveller but I forgot to mention that on the Brittany Ferry between Poole to Cherbourg its a four hour trip and you can leave your dog in your Motorhome or caravan and visit once during the crossing.
Very interesting blog Andrew thanks- never realised it was so straight forward! Be rest assured our furry dudes will be coming with us when we next go abroad.
I got caught out travelling to Malta, if you go directly between the UK and Malta you don’t need to worm treat, however, if you go into Malta from Europe you absolutely do need to worm treat 1-5 days prior to entry. Flint had to go into quarantine for 24hrs, which was pretty traumatic for both of us. Dougal looks super smart in glasses!
Absolutely, and they will administer the tablet as soon as you get there and let you take your dog the next day rather than make you wait 24hrs. Paying for it is a bit complicated but fortunately I was visiting friends. I’m actually just coming back through Calais and they have just changed my train time (for free so no complaints) because Flint’s treatment was a couple of hours shy of 24hrs before it leaves. They are sticklers...
Dfds on the UK to dieppe route will allow you to visit the car to check on the dog it can be a little fight with them to agree depending on the staff member (might b down to our age as we was both quite young ) but both times they let us down to check on them half way through just remember to let them know within the first hour or so as they have to contact the captain and get a deck hand to come escort you down
Always wise to check the vets......most expensive for us was the south of France. Spain is always tempting but I don’t like to rush back to make the 120 hour deadline. 🐾
Really great video but have you any ideas on weekend breaks we go across to Caen or Cherbourg on Brittany Ferries leaving early Saturday morning and returning Sunday evening...we intend to go over in our camper van. I presume that the tate worm injection can be administered before you go and will still be valid when you come back...Any thoughts? Thanks
Actually, 60 Euros is very reasonable for Belgium. The last time that I travelled to the UK with my {now sadly departed} Lurcher, in 2011, the procedure cost 119 Euros. That was the excepted normal rate at that time. Belgian Vets are notorious for the amount that they charge. Farmers have had protests and strikes over this issue. You where not personally ripped of by a Belgian Vet, everyone, especially those of us who live here, are being ripped off by an animal care system that is horrendously over priced when compared with other European countries.
Suffered from the same ripping off from a vet in Les Abrets. Grrr. Completely agree re the ease of Eurotunnel - we've taken Roary twice now and both times it's been a breeze - in and out no problem at all.
Nice clear video Andrew..Little Dougal is going to have a British passport soon...albeit printed abroad due to EU OJEC procurement laws Best Wishes to you and a Very Happy Easter James
if your dog has received tapeworm treatment before leaving the UK, will this negate him requiring it in the foreign country? So, eg, he has it 1 day before travel to France and stay in France for only 3 days, would he require it again while in France?
Andrew, my partner is retired and I'm just coming up to retirement so we've just purchased our first caravan. We hope to travel abroad at some stage with our two dogs so your video was just what we needed. From your other videos I know you've towed for a long time so I'd love your thoughts and possibly a video on that aspect of caravaning. My perception is and sadly it may be distorted by the ex Top Gear mob (who I like ) that caravans leave a trail of havoc and annoyance behind them. I would be pleased if you could share your experiences on the subject of towing, what are safe speeds as opposed to legal limits for various types of road. Do you pull over to let queues pass, in fact do you get queues nowadays with the lower speed limits on country roads. Do other motorists express anger when they pass, if so how best to deal with it?
Quite simply, I always pull over and let traffic pass. About 50% give no reaction, the other 50% flash or toot to say thank you. I’ll be writing a blog post about it soon so keep an eye on my website andrewditton.com. Cheers!
Very useful, thanks very much. I was concerned about any potential side effects he might suffer from the rabies jab, based on anecdotes found on the internet.
Hi Simon. Just saw your comment now, I was coming here by the link posted on Andrews live chat tonight. We travel regularily between UK and EU and has done for 15 years. None of our dogs has had any problem with the rabies jab. And remember the 21 days Andrew talks about in the above video is only the first time. The rabies injection has to be repeated every 3 years. If that is done, there is no waiting times anymore apart from the first time.
Hi Andrew my dog will be traveling from Malta to the UK. I won't be with my dog as there's no room for me in the van so my friends are taking him with there dog aswell .There going through France an Italy do they need to pay each vet that checks them.and do they need tapeworm doing aswell. Thank you
Hi Andrew and dougal very informative as usual really useful information does the rabies injection have to be done before every trip overseas ? Dougal is so cool love Louise Craig and scamp xx
No, just the once and the passport will be valid for the full three years. Thereafter you'll need to get a booster and the passport stamped again for another three years. But the worming - yes, every trip.
Are you sure that there are some companies that allow small pets to get into the cabin? I have a very small pinscher-chihuahua, I have been desperately trying to get this opportunity, but I haven't found any single company available so far. It is so frustrating!
Hi Andrew this is good info and we’ve been traveling abroad with our dogs for years. My concern is Brexit. We’ve already been warned by our vet things will change without a deal, making it very difficult to move as free as we have with the dogs. So disappointing
Thanks for the interesting video Mr D. and Dougal! I was curious after watching Loloho's recent video; there are different Caravan standards around the world, and I don't believe one is better than another, as they're all based on different factors and often different equipment. Can you drive on the roads with your caravan's gas turned on in Britain/EU, or is that forbidden?
I'm not sure on the legalities, but for safety reasons I always drive with the gas off and advise others to do so. There is, however, a 'crash valve' available now for LPG cylinders so I might in the future research that and maybe give it a go. Cheers!
Hi, Andrew! Thanks for you video.Could you tell which air companies alow us to care my pet in the cabine to the UK? I have asked to some of them and all told me they were not alow to transport it in the cabine. Many thanks!
Hello! I'm afraid I would only have to Google like you! I think every airline has its own policy. Dougal is 10 kilos and I have not yet found an Airline to fly to/from Glasgow or London to Europe.
what about ferries? i have a young cockapoo (16 weeks old) so can you please make a video about info for p&o ferries (dover to calais) with pets coming. thanks! :3
Hi Andréw, thanks for sharing , you just leave me with a concern . As I wanna take my dog ( a beagle ) from Colombia into the uk . So the dog will have to travel as cargo or in the hold, at least from Colombia to France and then we can do euro tunnel as you suggested, but I am really worried about taking him on cargo for 10 hours :-(
Same issue here. I will be moving to the UK for further studies. I really want to take my dog along. But he is not very good with strangers or alone. And the thought of him traveling in a cargo is heartbreaking.
@Andrew Ruiz I am living in Bogota and I want to return to the UK with my pet dog. I can't find any information from the UK government website. Do you know if it is possible with all the correct paperwork and vaccinations?
Hi Andrew really good video , I'm looking to go to menorca with my 2 cockerpoos 🙂going by car so going to use euro tunnel but do you or any of your viewers know much about trip from Barcelona to menorca with dogs Thank you
Afraid I don't know Mark, without just trawling the internet which yo have no doubt already done. But I guess even if they have to go into a kennel on the boat, that would be less stressful for them than flying.
Have you covered a video on service animals what if an American goes to England with his wife that's from England in the American has a service animal can you do a video on that if you're able to that way Americans will know what they can and can't do if they have a service animal
Hi Barry, this video is out of date now since Brexit, although the return to UK procedure remains the same. I'll be posting a post-Brexit update in October when we get back from Germany. Cheers!
Very interesting video - do we know how the UK exit from the EU will change the pet passport system and how and if we will be able to travel with our pets to the continent ?
The Ponkster No. A human passport will be blue and production of said passport will move from the UK to France 😯 Ps- l like France and the French people 😀
TBH I don't know. I guess, like everything, the government will now have to sit down and organise arrangements with 26 countries individually rather than just having one agreement with all of them. When you think they've had about 5 years to discuss the immigration regime for direct Amsterdam to London Eurostar services, and it will be late 2019 before there is any hope of an agreement and the trains can finally run (over a year after the direct London to Amsterdam services start), it doesn't hold out a lot of hope :-/
A quick Google search has shown a vet in Eastbourne who charges £122 for microchip implantation, rabies jab, and passport issue. Obviously this will vary from vet to vet and whether or not your pet is already chipped.
Please reply to me .. i am cluless and so sad.. because i did everything to bring my cat in the Uk i only have limited time to process everything ... btw . Im from the Philippines .. i get my cat a microchip it was successfully implanted.. did a rabies vaccine deworming etc. But i keep on looking if it’s possible to bring my cat there.. help me and hope someone has experience like this from my country Philippines to the Uk..
Ha ha! Maybe because I'm a Gaelic speaker. I am guilty of doing it the other way around too. A lot of my Gaelic-speaking friends laugh when we are chatting and I'll drop an English place name in a Southern English accent in a Gaelic conversation... :-/

I watch this video twice a year, every time I travel between France and the UK.
We’ve looked at few of these explanations on RUclips but this was by far the best. Excellent . Very well put over. Thank you😊😊
Hi Andrew, wonderfully clear video - you’ve definitely encouraged me to take my boys over to Europe. Thank you so much

Congratulations! Yes, it is a lot easier than some folks try and make out.
Andrew, great information for us those pet parents! You are the best! Thank you so much for these valuable tips.
Another fantastic and informative video Andrew particularly as we’re heading over to France later this year. Thanks for sharing
Hi Andrew and Dougal. Glad you made this video. Great information and an excellent video.
Love the laid back Dougal. Long may your travelling companion wag his tail.
Thanks for this. your more knowledgable than our vets who gave our dog a rabies injection and did not know about how many days about bringing him back in to country. Or going out! Thanks Andrew good info and great to have it from someone who (along with the Dougmiester) has really experienced the good and bad👍
Useful info Andrew, thank you. Good to see you back in the Airstream again. Also old to see Dougal is his usual animated self😂😂

Hahaha! Yup, Dougal jumped and gave you lots of love & kisses as soon you turned the camera off!
Yeah right.... ;@)
Thank you Andrew, very useful, we're taking Hetty to Europe next year big 👍
Really informative film Andrew. We could see the excitement building in Dougal. LOL. J&P
Ha ha! Thanks J&P!
This is great, just looking into taking our dogs abroad next year.

Yuk! But at least you had a 24 hour quarantine option I guess, and not worse.

That was so helpful on the gov site it looked so complicated.
Well, things might now change slightly if we get a hard Brexit... UGH!
Andrew Ditton I know right 🤦🏼♀️ Ps I’m not stalking you, I’m binge watching as I’m off with tonsillitis and and stinking cold. 😃

A video from the airstream again great :)
We brought our cat from Australia 🇦🇺
to Germany 🇩🇪
All we needed was a rabbies shot 21 day's prior to the travel day and must have a microchip..
Troy Kirchner good to know might bring my dog from canada
Did your cat 🐈 have any bad effects from rabbies shot ____. Did you not need any pet passport saying youve had lots of vaccines ? Thanks
Good stuff-so informative and clear-you are the best :)
Thanks! so informative.
Cats have to seen 48 hrs before travel out of Belgium to UK (airline) just to get the ok for travel. It's usually cost free
This was the video i needed thanks!
Thank you! Can you do a video about traveling with assistance dog from the US to UK?
Really great video but have you any ideas on weekend breaks we go across to Caen or Cherbourg on Brittany Ferries leaving early Saturday morning and returning Sunday evening...we intend to go over in our camper van. I presume that the tate worm injection can be administered before you go and will still be valid when you come back...Any thoughts? Thanks
Hi Andrew, greetings from deepest Macclesfield, really good video, our experience re France and pets, take a Tic removal tool, our dog always gets tics.
Tony Farrell oh thanks, can you get those of amazon?

That is really interesting, thanks for that Ian. I wish I had known that before! Now I will definitely stick to NL or D before heading back.
Really useful thanks Andrew. One day I'll be brave enough to take my caravan abroad and I'll be taking my dog with me for moral support!
Suffered from the same ripping off from a vet in Les Abrets. Grrr.

Hi Andrew and Dougal, very interesting vlog, , great info !!
Hi Andrew, Interesting information!
Great info, Superb as usual, Thanks Andrew! I am however now wondering how much Jack Russell is in Dougal. He was very calm with that lovely rat.😉😉
Believe it or not, both his mum and dad were Jack Russells...
Andrew Ditton Ha! I believe you though it seems a fox got into the hen house at some point.😎😘
Another very informative video. Thanks
Thanks again Andrew, I am off to Arisaig tomorrow ;>
Excellent, enjoy!
Very interesting, thank you. Animals used to have to go into six months quarantine, is that applicable now for any reason?
Hi Andrew, did you try out pets corner at the Eurotunnel? We installed the artificial grass there. It'd be good to hear your opinion of it :)
Yes we did! Let's just say Dougal still prefers the real thing for... you know... 'that'! But I think I need a roll of it for outside the Airstream :)
Good info Mr D! Loving your rat. Double makes me laugh. He's so blase. 😃
Yes, he used to be soooo 'superior' around those pesky rats! ;@)
Cheers!
Thanks Andrew. I look forward to your post.
Hi, are you able to advise on Asia? Taiwan,Korea and Japan? As UK is not in the E.U anymore. Thanks for the video.
Sadly not, but you can find out more at www.gov.uk/bring-pet-to-great-britain
Very useful, thanks very much. I was concerned about any potential side effects he might suffer from the rabies jab, based on anecdotes found on the internet.
Hi Simon. Just saw your comment now, I was coming here by the link posted on Andrews live chat tonight. We travel regularily between UK and EU and has done for 15 years. Brittany Ferries. But you can't book a pet cabin with a high vehicle (go figure!) :-/
@@andrewjditton Sorry, I meant, flying companies.
I have seen a dog in the cabin of Air Brussels, but other than that I don’t know - try a google search as I think there are a few.
Hi Andrew this is good info and we’ve been traveling abroad with our dogs for years. My concern is Brexit. We’ve already been warned by our vet things will change without a deal, making it very difficult to move as free as we have with the dogs. So disappointing
We'll have to wait and see on all fronts Lynda. I still can't believe it's going ahead with everything we now know.
do you know anything about transferring a parrot UK to canaries?

Here in the United States we have the ADA Laws regarding service animals

Hi, please check the UK Government website for current advice. Good luck!

Your best bet is to check the UK Government website: www.gov.uk/bring-pet-to-uk
what camera you use ?
So many! I shall make a vlog about it soon!
From Ireland to U.K. ferry travel is horrible, they treat your dog like a suitcase :(
The good old days
I wonder how Dougal would like the sun and sand in San Diego? 😉
Can i bring my cat to the Uk im from the Philippines
I'm a RUclipsr. You would be better off asking the UK Government :) Good luck!
A passport is now required to take your pet from the UK to Ireland
Dougal as "cargo" :-( Perish the thought!
He is not amused! ;@)

Why are you saying Ireland like a you're a Leprechaun?
Ha ha! Maybe because I'm a Gaelic speaker. I am guilty of doing it the other way around too. A lot of my Gaelic-speaking friends laugh when we are chatting and I'll drop an English place name in a Southern English accent in a Gaelic conversation... :-/
It give us a laugh anyway.
just don't travel with your puppy on united airlines 😢
I wouldn't even try :(
Is it because they serve hot dogs onboard?
What a pointless video. Why not just link to the relevant gov web site........
Very helpful, thank you
