I met Paul at the 1982 Kerouac literary conference at Naropa Institute in Boulder, a conference which Paul mentions near the end of this video, before he reads his poem. Paul was a terrific actor, a terrific person, and a terrific poet.
so true. Paul Gleason had such a gift for playing "Asshole" characters. But as you watch this interview you immediately find out he's the complete opposite of his Breakfast Club or Die Hard characters.
Saw him once when we were out driving in LA late at night during the 90s. Pulled up at a light and naturally looked at the only other car next to us at that hour, and it hit us who it was and we honked and he gave us a big smile and waved back.
What a fine, well-spoken actor. I've never seen a role--no matter how small--where he didn't bring significant impact to the movie. When you see someone in a small, supporting role and end up thinking, "I'd really like to have seen more of that character." that's often not a testimony to writing; it's a credit to true talent. He had that in abundance.
Best comeback in the entire movie “The next screw that falls out, is gonna be you!” Yes Paul Gleason is a fine actor, extremely convincing in all his roles! And a truly amazing and genuine man off screen, very bright and insightful.
Paul Gleason, a very under rated actor. He was brilliant as the Richard Vernon character in this movie. I would have loved to see him casted in more movie roles during his career.
He was also great as Biggs in Trading Places ruclips.net/video/3vOwp16J924/видео.html and as the LA deputy police chief Dwayne T. Robinson in Die Hard! ruclips.net/video/msn-mDaJInA/видео.html
Man, he did such an awesome job of portraying a bullying asshole. I suppose you could describe him as burnt out, but he was also downright mean (his character) It's so interesting seeing him so friendly with the cast in these clips. RIP!
I first saw _The Breakfast Club_ at the age of 15 without parental accompaniment. To be fair, however, at the time, I was *not* aware that it was rated R or *why.* So what got me interested in this movie then?! Here's how: as a teenager, I was researching on Wikipedia the A-Teens music video of their cover of the ABBA song "Dancing Queen," and it was said that it was a tribute to the movie, and that Gleason was reprising the role as school principal from the movie.
What's funny is, where I came from, we had In-School Suspension in Jr. High. When you messed up, you got "excommunicated" to this special class. The thing is we had a teacher who was made of gold and he really understood kids. When you got in there, you got roasted but it was in the funnest way possible and sometimes he played co-conspirator. The guy was a genius because you had nothing to rebel against and you were treated as an equal. Sometimes you would purposely get in trouble just because you missed him and wanted to hang out. Don't get me wrong, he would show disappointment in what you did wrong, but he was still glad to see you again -- it was like letting a friend down, and that's what really makes you evaluate your decisions. The best part was that while you were in there, you got all of your homework sent to you and you could get it all finished in there so you'd have the rest of your time after school to do whatever you wanted.
Met him real quick at Cat & Fiddle on Sunset a year or so before he left us. Nice, seemed in good spirits. The movie "bad guy" character actors are always the coolest, nicest people to meet. All their demons must get released forever playing baddies. Something about it.
I had 5 of him junior year.......learned more from them on various Saturdays than any lesson they may have lectured during the week.......PG you reminded me of Mrs Gates (greatest school counselor ever, because she listened), so thank you....no PG, don't want to even think about how this film plays out. And God bless Carl....every HS student knows one, less recognition than the teacher's and admin (if that's possible). Those men and women got a lot of us misfits through...of course than we all became St. Elmo's criminals....so wait :) Better time
Gleason also starred in a episode of "The A-Team" called "The Trouble with Harry". He played a burnt-out and cynical character there too. That episode also starred Hulk Hogan.
He also appeared in an episode of “The Wonder Years”. It was about a wedding and he played the Father of the bride. Whatever the episode was, this would be worth checking out.
AS A HORROR SCIENCE FICTION FAN IN 1985 I WAS NOT TOO HAPPY WHEN SOME FRIENDS TOOK ME TO SEE THIS MOVIE CALLED "THE BREAKFAST CLUB" BUT EARLY IN THE FILM ACTOR PAUL GLEASON APPEARED ON THE MOVIE SCREEN ...I SAID "HEY, THAT'S. THE MAN FROM THE TEGRIN MEDICATED SHAMPOO COMMERCIAL "....NOW I KNOW HIS NAME !!!....MR. OWENS- "HEY COACH JOHNSON, HOW IS THAT DANDRIFF PROBLEM ? COACH JOHNSON- "WHAT DANDRIFF PROBLEM ?....TEGRIN IS A WINNER MR. OWENS !!!!" PAUL GLEASON BECAME ONE OF MY FAVORITE ALL TIME ACTORS !!!!
"Show Dick some respect"....Gleason was your consummate straw-man (Die Hard) or antagonist (Breakfast Club, Van Wilder). SUPERB actor who knew the buttons to press to get the audience to hate his character. Just amazing...!
I remember this movie. Every character, I could see in real-life people at my school at the time. I know why so many love this movie. I loved calling my little brother a neo-maxie-zoon-dweebe. lol
Somewhere deep in the alchemy of the cosmos lies an alternate earth, where Paul Gleason played Vince McMahon in a biopic of his life up to the formation of the WWF/WWE. He won an academy award and the film was praised by critics. On CriticMeta(this earth's Metacritic), it holds a score of 89/100. Bradley Cooper was also nominated for a best supporting role for his portrayal of HHH but lost. The film was directed by David Cronenberg(A History of Violence) with a screenplay by William Goldman
On set, something ironic happened. On screen, Judd Nelson and Paul Gleason played characters that hated each other. However, Judd was harassing Molly Ringwald off set to keep himself in character. John Hughes threatened to fire Judd but Paul Gleason stood up for Judd and said that he was only harassing Molly to keep himself in character. Paul must have been one awesome guy to work with and very unlike the rude assholes that he plays (Die Hard, the Breakfast Club, Trading Places). R.I.P. Paul, you were amazing!
Well Anthony Michael Hall was pretty much born and bred to be an actor and had just done Vacation with Hughes, who informed him that he had another part for him, and then another in Weird Science. So Hall, Ringwold, then John Candy, then Mcauley Kulkin, were featured in more than one Hughes films, ppl would say they were his muses. Ringwold the obvious biggest. Emilio Estevez, well he's Martin Sheen's son, a family of actors, Charlie Sheen his brother, Carlos Estevez, was already nearly big time, after The Outsiders and then the lead in Repo Man. Molly Ringwold just did Sixteen Candles and Hughes had plenty more to come from her, Judd Nelson was the oldest and 24 years old, playing John Bender, then Ally Sheedy as Allison, she's the least I'm familiar with and the one who had the weakest career out of all of them. She did St Elmo's Fire, then a flop, then idk. But Emilio Estevez got behind the camera after a little over a decade of descent movies. Michael Hall did Weird Science, after that Out of Bounds(flop),then Johnny Be Good which was actually pretty funny and he teamed with RDJ in that film. Then he did another with RDJ called Hail Caeser then guest spots in movies and TV, then he was a main character in 2021s Halloween Kills, playing Tommy Doyle. Imo Judd Nelson was obviously the actor who has had the best career, he's still in movies, on TV, he was and has had steady work and been in some great movies. He's very versatile. He can do comedy, drama, crime, and even plays a hell of a psycho as well. Check out some of his really crazy movies, where he is a psychotic killer. Great movies. But The Breakfast Club stands the test of time, yes it has an 80s feel and sound and bit of a look. But this movie is a classic! And is one of the best movies ever made, so each one of the cast members, will always be cemented by this film.
Gone too soon! 💔 and not enough individual interviews of him in real life, but that’s probably because he said “you know” far too frequently in his sentences. Probably got on a lot of interviewers’ nerves.
He acted like a real life burnt out Teacher. Great performance.
Principal, more like it.
And yes.
Concur with you.
Gleason did an amazingly convincing job that he was an authoritarian figure.
I met Paul at the 1982 Kerouac literary conference at Naropa Institute in Boulder, a conference which Paul mentions near the end of this video, before he reads his poem. Paul was a terrific actor, a terrific person, and a terrific poet.
Its nice to see paul smiling and laughing naturally since he usually played miserable characters on screen, he was fantastic in his craft
RIP. I was unaware of his passing. Great actor, funny guy.
I loved him in this film and Die Hard
Him and John Hughes too 🙁💔

Tender Mercies, too. Another classic.
Such a crucial, underrated part of what made Breakfast Club and Die Hard so great. Totally amazing, irreplaceable actor.
Also great in Trading Places.
In Wrestling, he would be The Heel. There's no Face without The Heel.
so true. Paul Gleason had such a gift for playing "Asshole" characters. But as you watch this interview you immediately find out he's the complete opposite of his Breakfast Club or Die Hard characters.
And 'Not Another Teen Movie' too
Tender Mercies, too.
That 'Breakast Club' poem at the end there...by Paul Gleason was absolute genius....Awesome.
Saw him once when we were out driving in LA late at night during the 90s. Pulled up at a light and naturally looked at the only other car next to us at that hour, and it hit us who it was and we honked and he gave us a big smile and waved back.
The Breakfast Club would not hit the spot without Paul playing this bitter teacher that wishes he wasn't there! Thanks Paul
What a fine, well-spoken actor. I've never seen a role--no matter how small--where he didn't bring significant impact to the movie. Wow Paul Gleason in real life seems like a real fun and cool guy
I can’t imagine anyone else playing the principal in this movie Paul was outstanding
I don't think he was playing the principal of the school - just a teacher.....
The janitor killed it in this movie.
Carl was great! He was speaking truth to Vernon in that storage room. 😎👍
You understand them more when you get older.

He was also in Weird Science playing the role of the jerk giving Anthony Michael Hall's character a hard time in the jazz club.
He was a perceptive and very cool guy. I liked hearing his observations.

I do too even though I never seen all of his movies Nicholas Wilkinson, He had lung cancer
I love when he smiles 😇👑🙏
Paul was SO fantastic in this film!!
I love that he fought for Judd to stay in the film.
RIP Mr. Vernon
He was key to this movie. Without him, who could we love to hate ?
I hated Bender at first, haha, but soon realized he wasn't all that bad. 😅

Yeah - much like Tom Wilson (?) who played Biff in BTTF - supposed to be one of the NICEST GUYS in real life!!.....
Paul Gleason was a great. Whether in a comedy, or the serious FBI action movies he's solid.
This guy was such a great actor. He was so funny in Johnny Be Good.

His character kept hitting on Norma Arnold. I forgot about that. Thank you.
Like Olivier and Brando, Paul Gleason truly understood the art of acting. Proof of claim: "The Breakfast Club."
Wow, great point. A lot of people would think it’s crazy to compare Gleason to Brando. Nah, not me. He was an underrated actor that died way too soon.
