The documentary shows the East Japan Railway Company's precision maintenance regime as carried out on bullet train tracks and carriages in order to ensure maximum safety of these high speed trains running at 320kph.. -- documentary credit (NHK World)
Long live Japan. I am an Indian. I respect Japanese for their uprightness, sincerity, dedication, discipline and honesty.. Something which is not there in my country..
Even thousand years will not be enough to be like Japan
Japanese is pure mixture of discipline, dedication and diligence
Great respect to Japanese people
India is nothing infront of Japan

Superior Japanese technology and maintenance! And, after billions of passengers since 1964---not one fatality. NOT ONE. Absolutely brilliant...
The Shinkansen has a good record, but there was a serious accident in Amagasaki in 2005 with 107 fatalities although that was believed to be driver error.
@@MervynPartin That wasn't a shinkansen but a commuter train. There's considerably more accidents on those.
@@hammerfalls9992 Yes, I was aware of it being a commuter train (some of which I have used in Japan), but my comment was not aimed at the Shinkansen itself, but the words "superior Japanese technology and maintenance" which may be mostly good, but has produced some poor results in a few instances (think of IET on the GWR or if you have ever worked on Japanese ship some of the machinery leaves a lot to be desired). In other words, no one is perfect!
@@hammerfalls9992 not more than India though
@@MervynPartin the class 800s are put together here though so its likely flaws are down to the British workforce
310 Kph on the Shinkansen is as smooth as glass with very little sensation of speed until you enter a tunnel. If a Shinkensen is a minute late it's a news story in Japan. You can literally set your watch by the arrival and departure of the trains. The cars are spotless, inside and out, and the bathrooms are clean and spacious. If we had that kind of train service in the U.S. the airlines with their tiny seats, "go f_ _ _ _ yourself" attitudes, surcharge after surcharge, and peanuts if your lucky, would either go belly up, or learn what customer service means.
I'd love to see nationwide train service like this. Crossing the country in 10 hours by comfy train beats cramming into an airplane for a 6 hour ride hands-down. Monstrously expensive to build and run though; we've got a lot more ground to cover in the States than they do in Japan. And I can't say whether I would worry more if a private corporation tried to do it or our government did. Either way it probably wouldn't match the high standard set by the Shinkansen.
It's the same cost per mile bro
Sure, with MANY more miles to cover than in Japan.
I remember the days of peanuts....I didn’t realize it was such a privilege back then. I am gleeful every time an American airline goes belly up.
Japan is about the size of California.
Even the micrometer carries the words 'Made in Japan' Says it all, really. Impressive stuff!!
I can remember back when anything that had "Made in Japan" stamped on it was immediately dismissed as "Junk" or "Worthless". Japan has come a long way since then
@@bibekanandahansda2926 it was before ww2 and several years after ww2 back when japan product considered as second grade copies of the west. And the japanese started making it better than the west
Almost every engineer and machinist in America has at least one pair of Mitutoyo calipers.
Yes I too noticed that.
Why does a Japanese micrometer used by Japanese machinists in a Japanese shop say MADE IN JAPAN written in English?

Their commitment to safety warms my heart.

Airplane is the safest transportation in the world? No, the Shinkansen is.
This is devotion of Japanese towards their work...
If you are wondering why the trains have those strange shaped noses, it is to reduce aerodynamic shocks when entering and exiting tunnels at high speed.
Thumbs up to Japan for making these great machines..!

That ultrasound scanner, on a larger scale of course, is what the U. S. needs for boiler inspections on excursion steam locomotives. FRA boiler inspections are a pain, but imagine cutting the time for that from 2 years to a weekend.
YES! Metric measurements the rest of the world can understand!

I was in Japan, the Shinkansen is AMAZING!!!!
These huge cost of maintenances and replacements of various parts and supporting facilities causes the high price of shinkanses service. Actually it is pretty simple, good service = high price. It is a simple math... So, you can't expect these type of trains runs with subsidize from the government, as a part of public service obligation. Except, for the local train or some suburb service, that's another thing.
And their vehicles are very well made also. Purchased my first Toyota in 1967 after being VERY disappointed in Detroit products. No comparison.

And they say, India is planning to install a Japanese Bullet train line. I don't think the Japanese will allow their first fatality to be overseas.
INDIA IS THE PANTRY TO THE MODERN WORLD .
@Nara Fire may be commenting on other countries efforts, really Indian Railways punctuality had gone up to almost 85 percent in southern railway, impressive stuff
I would be interested to see what the profitability of these trains are. With the religious maintenance of the trains and the lines themselves the upkeep has to be seriously costly. In the US the CEO’s would never spend so much on maintenance if they could avoid it. All they care is increased shareholder values. Just look at the US Airline industry, they go to extremes to avoid maintenance costs. Outsourcing to low wage countries, spreading out maintenance intervals to the minimum the manufacturers and the FAA will allow.
awesome engineering.
Salute for hard working.. I love Japan. Love from India.
India can have japan hi- sp train, The question is can they maintain the same level maintenance service after one year later.

3000 workers each night for just 1 section of the track maintenance.... the cost is huge!
This feat is a proof of Japan's national character. Patriotism, honesty are dominant traits of Japan's national character that helped it to overcome natural and human induced disasters and rebuild the nation.
Better pay a bit more for the safety than being dead.
Air liner companies proved it.
When I was in the Navy, long ago, I was on a local train from Yokosuka to Tokyo. We kept passing the same bullet train. I asked someone why. It was on a maintenance run. I thought for awhile maybe the local was faster.

What makes Shinkansen special is not a train nor a operation system. Maintenance and education system based on Japanese ethics do.
Our New York City subways and Long Island trains are garbage trucks that run on rail lines.
Japanese are great at health and saftey
We appreciate our having Japan as an ally. Wish the US wasn't in such a mess as of late so we could offer our friends in the region some sense of security. Lived though the Depression, World War II and everything since and can't believe how far the leadership of this country has deteriorated. There isn't anything to the Donald. He thinks he is the star of yet another reality show. He has given the far right tacit approval to do whatever they can to disrupt an already fracture society. Again, I can't believe we are in such a wretched state of chaos in the federal government. At least the state and local governments are functioning.BAH HUMBUG Washington, bah humbug.

4:45 wheel continually rolls. So, it will wear & surface aligns. When rail will align.
Its alot harder than the wheel, i just machined those wheels couple days ago at work. Wheels are just S355 Structural steel.
And if you didnt realize the train is travelling while the rail is not, so use your head a bit.
@@KehusQ : thank you. I know that wheel surface will be subjected to more wear than rail as it repeatedly comes into contact with long rail which runs for kms. But I am interested in wear rate & replacement of rail also (may be in years).
In finland, all the rails and tracks get inspected every year. They upkeep rsils by welding and/or grinding them regurarly to keep the shape. They dont really deform at all. And ultrasound inspection shows if theres any structural damage, which means the rail needs to gets replaced.
Excellent experience
Wide enough to move to sleep, two containers. Lift to carry, lift to change the wheels, two heads the worm, big and bigger.

So are the track rails not crowned like American trains to counter differential of a solid axle? Or did they just ignore this for the sake of highlighting reprofiling the wheels?

Japan, the best!!
Does it still exist after Fukashima?
The Japanese actually wanted to sell these trains to the U.S. but the Govt didn't want to buy them

Considering that Indian Railway is much bigger, carries three times more people than its rated capacity, yet performs safely and adequately, at prices that may put corporate accountants in to a coma, is a feat that many do not know. We may not be the fastest, but have a network other countries can only dream of. Comparatively, Accident rates are very low too. And yes, did I mention, the food is much better, fresher than the airline and cost five times less?

Take a look at the latest Chinese highspeed trains, they are way much better and advance than the Japanese trains.

Comprehensive people,worker and government.
One question. Why every Shinkansen unit has a dirty roof (???). Is washing the roof in the unit is such a problem? Each train carries a ton of "debris" on roof ....
Probably no problem. Maybe a little bit larger drag coefficient (C_D value, although it mainly comes from a friction between flowing air and a fuselage that has stain). But it can be easily overcame by powerful motors. If the clean roof is pursued, the car must be washed every day and it cost a lot. Money for such cleaning is invested in rigid maintenance, I guess.
I did not mean to wash the roof every day. It can be 3-4 times a year. I understand that the train's body is cleaned every day and very well. Thanks for the reply ;-)

The safest spot in Japan in an earthquake - shinkansen
It's, essentially, an airliner on rails.
i know I shouldn’t be saying this but after seeing this kind of perfection i think i born in wrong country ☹️
Shinkasnsen does NOT mean Bullet train! That is what foreigners (english speaking mostly) always get wrong no matter tv shows or tourists. It simply means highspeed rail.
The first generation of Shinkansen were given the name "Bullet Train," but this name is not used so much nowadays. "Shinkansen" has become an English word.
Shinkansen (新幹線): 新 (Shin) means “new” and 幹線 (Kan Sen) means “trunk line”.
The name "Bullet Train" is the English translation of the Japanese word dangan ressha (弾丸列車), which was the name given to the project while it was being made in the 1940s. Nowadays, the trains are called Shinkansen trains. The name Shinkansen means "New Trunk Line". The trains are called "Super Expresses".
