I've got a story about that Bo Hansson album. It must have been 20 years ago now when I went over to California from Sweden to spend Christmas with my girlfriend's parents. While I was there the man that is now my father in-law said to me "go take a look at my old records in the garage, you can have any you want." He didn't need to offer twice. Anyway, he had loads of LPs from the 60's and 70's, mainly by groups of black guys with big afro hair dos. The Temptations, Four Tops, The Commodores, The Jacksons.... At the time, 60's and 70's soul just was not my bag. I was deeply into prog....and then amongst them all I turned up something completely different. It was Ur Tolkien's Hatt. I couldn't believe it. I'd travelled all the way from Sweden to America to sift through a huge batch of classic American albums only to find a classic Swedish prog record that I took back to Sweden with me. Incredible.
I own two copies of Bo Hansson's Magician's Hat, one the American pressing on Charisma and the other the Swedish original on Silence called Ur Trollkarlens Hatt. On the Swedish original, the opening cut "The City" (called "Storstad" on this version) is about twice as long as those on the international versions. All other non-Swedish LP pressings featured the more common shortened version. Also the Swedish version lacks "Divided Reality". So that means the reason "The City" was cut in half on international versions was to make room for "Divided Reality". I've heard a lot of people who bought the CD reissue of Magician's Hat were surprised to see "The City" being twice as long, because they never owned the Swedish original LP.
