Hi, not getting the plastic, you should use a Corundum stone, or Norbit ,that way you are embedding teh diamond in, to the plate, not just spreading it

I use Corundum. I don't know that using a Norbit is a good idea for setting the diamond. I wouldn't want particles of it getting in with my diamond. A Norbit is good for burnishing the lap though and good for cleaning Sintered laps.

Kevin, I use the water base diastik- could I do the exact procedure and just replace oil with water to get the same effect?

Yes! Although remember that different species of gemstones when polishing with water verses oil may react different on the BATT lap.

Can one BATT lap be used for different grit diamond sticks or is it once you charge it you have to stick with the same grit?

No! Once charged with a diamond mesh say 3000k it will always be a 3000k unless you have the lap resurfaced. You can charge it with a lower mesh say 2000k and then is no longer a 3000k. The great thing about a BATT lap is it is two sided one side can be charged with 3000k for prepolishing and the other with 50,000k for polish, You need to take care in the handling of a two side charged BATT lap as you do not want to cross contaminate the 50,000k side with the 3000k.

Is it a one time use? Or can you get many uses out if one charge?

It depends on the hardness and size of stone and facets you are polishing. You might be able to polish a couple tiny stones with one charge or have to recharge a couple times just to polish the crown and the table on a large stone (like a 1 inch diameter quartz).

thanks for this. do you charge it like that each time you use this lap or just the first time?

When the polishing starts taking too long, clean the lap and then repeat this process.
Sometimes it helps to set the diamond using a piece of Corundum Boule. I have a piece dopped to a Long Dop which is easy to hold when setting the diamond and burnishing the lap.
