i've been attacked repeatedly in the comments so i feel the need to clarify: For the record - I understand and have understood since before I saw the film - why people are boycotting this movie - it does glorify an abusive relationship. The point I stated repeatedly in this video is that the movie does not contain rape, I stated this point repeatedly because as I stated, I've been accused multiple times of supporting rape because I saw the film. Just because I didn't discuss the abuse in detail in this video doesn't mean I'm not aware of it. I'm well versed in what abuse is I've dealt with it first hand. I did reference it briefly but that's not what i wanted to focus on. This video is primarily focused on how similar this movie is to twilight because my main motivations to see the film where A) because it is twilight fan fiction and B) because I wanted to be able to properly make fun of it. I enjoyed the film not because i enjoy watching an abusive relationship, not because i am in any way attracted to christian grey i really don't like the dude, BUT because i love twilight and seeing twilight fanfiction put on the screen before me was hilarious.
i'm glad that even though you haven't read the books, you understand that EVERYTHING is CONSENSUAL. when you read her thoughts in the book, it's definitely more obvious that she likes everything they do, so THANK YOU for agreeing with me :) SO TWILIGHT IT'S RIDICULOUS you've opened me up to so many more twilight references like omfg i swear you should rename this video to "why 50 shades is literally twilight" because you hit the head on the nail ;D watching this review i'm just screaming PREACH PREACH PREACH i get sh*t on on twitter all the time for defending this book about how ana isn't always passive and christian isn't threatening or dangerous so THANK YOU FOR CONFIRMING THAT I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE you are amazing and ily ok
I still can't handle it. How did this movie happen. When you were going over all the parts again, I was just laughing cause we were in hysterics over how Twilighty this was. GOLDEN RETRIEVER MIKE NEWTON! LOLOLOL! I just though of another, those girls at graduation who were talking about how hot Christian was, I betcha that was Jessica and Angela!!!
Simply because I like some piece of entertainment does not mean I promote all of the behaviors shown in it. What about Dexter fans, should they be shamed for promoting serial killers and murder? What about Game of Thrones fans for promoting true rape and murder? What about video games like Grand Theft Auto, should those fans be accused of supporting theft and violence? I mean I could go on forever. I’m not saying that our entertainment culture isn’t strange or that it doesn’t inspire bad behaviors. Because it certainly does. I’m saying how can so many people shame Fifty Shades fans for their form of entertainment? Because isn’t there at least a little bit of hypocrisy there?
I was raped and I can tell you from experience, the books/movie do not in anyway describe being raped. For those who may not be familiar with what rape is. Rape is being forced to have sex against your will. You're not given a choice. Anastasia consented to sex with Christian Grey. She knew about the kinky stuff that he was into. She wasn't being forced to do anything. It had nothing to do with rape. Ana could have said no.
I don't think seeing the movie means your supporting rape. I do think the fact that Hollywood made a movie based on the glorification of sexual abuse is the effed up thing hence why I wont be spending money on it because it will encourage them to make more. We're all adults though (well the ones seeing the movie are, I hope), we make our own decisions. To each their own.
I agree with you up until 'To each their own'. I'm in the same boat as you, not seeing the movie. But are the only people that are going adults? No. My 16 year old sister and her friends (the youngest being 14), bought tickets online and were allowed in. This is creating an impression on young children, and perpetuating these glorified and romanticized cases of domestic abuse. We, as adults, are able to understand how damaging these relationships can be, but can a 14 year old? Can they look at a couple that 'consents' and professes their love for each other, and see that as abuse? It's definitely a question with no answer, but some food for thought!
Indigo Wayworth well I'm 15 and I'm pretty sure that very few teenagers around my age would take it so literally. I haven't seen the movie but I known what happens and honestly teenagers nowadays are much more aware of issues than adults believe. We can form logical opinions and challenge things we think are wrong, as well as forming our own opinions without us being completely influenced by one thing. I know plenty of people who want to see the movie just because they're curious, and at the end of the day, its a movie, so the influence it can have is limited.
I totally recognize your opinion that the film/series/franchize does not support rape. But it does glamorize an unhealthy, emotionally and sexually abusive relationship. The book, which I've read (for a paper about media portrays of abusive relationships), contains passages like: “’No,’ I protest, trying to kick him off. He stops. ‘If you struggle, I’ll tie your feet. “‘No, please. I can’t do this. Not now. I need some time. Please.” “Oh, Ana, don’t overthink this.” “’Alaska is very cold and no place to run. I would find you. I can track your cell phone- remember?’” “How did you feel while I was hitting you and after?” “I didn’t like it. I’d rather you didn’t do it again.” “You weren’t meant to like it.” And by paying to seeing this movie or enjoying it doesn't make you a bad person. It doesn't make anyone a bad person. But it does continuously perpetuate unsafe relationships like this one by marketing it as romance. And while the movie might differ from the book, in the way of Anastasia's consent and enthusiasm, It doesn't discredit the fact that the production and consumption of the movie still promotes it. And you even said that there was some type of emotional manipulation. So why are we promoting something that can influence our culture in such an unhealthy way? How many young girls, and you know they're going to see it, are going to see that, and believe that it's romance? I hope I don't come off as demeaning, as that's not my intention. I can see your opinion, and it's 100% valid. These are just my thoughts, and I thought that this would be a place to share them and start a discussion.
Christine, I love you and your videos and they have never failed to make me smile. I know that you don't feel the book condones rape/sexual assault/abusive relationships, but the people who are against the movie do, and most of them have been raped or sexually assaulted themselves. I am one of these victims of sexual abuse, and for the life of me I can't help but see my experience everywhere in both the movie and book. Please, please don't feel resentment or frustration towards us for not wanting this movie to be successful.
oh no! I'm not saying anything about the books! i've heard the books are horribly abusive. I'm only talking about what i've observed from seeing only the film. i've never read the books. I'm so sorry to hear that you've been a victim of abuse
***** I love your videos to Ive seen probably every one of them lol and this movie review was so accurate (I saw it to) and funny i was laughing the whole time! I just wanted to say since your probably not going to read the books that he never rapes her and never does anything she doesnt want him to just like in the movie. I just wanted to clear all the stuff people were saying about it that wasnt true :) bye
You can not like it, it is okay, and it is horrible you experience that, the book is not so bad as they paint it, on my opinion, but I do understand the people that do not want to see it nor read it, is is okay ❤️
I read the books for kicks. Never does anyone ever rape anyone. The closest thing to rape in the book is when Ana's friend tries to make a pass on her when she's drunk. She always allows Christian to do what she pleases and even though she's a pretty damn weak character, she always would tell him when things were too far. There is never rape. For all the people saying that these books include assault, READ THEM because you'll find that they're actually quite enjoyable and though they're kinky, they're not in any way about rape.
Thank you, cuz now the community of the book or at least me, makes me feel scared of saying things, and just because the things where taking out of context by people looking to judge does not mean that that thing is true
I completely agree with everything you just said! The worst thing is when people judge something without reading it or they just twist the words of someone who has read it. It's just aggravating to no end.
TheHG12 That happens on a dayly basis... that is something the person has to work for, both of them where realy dependant of each other, and that wasen't really good, but still ana makes her ground, and it does not romaticies that kind of action, if it did it woudd be more of stocolm sindrome, also it it did, it it telling a story... books and movies are ment to be that way, you just make your judgment from it :)
Saying "This movie supports rape" kind of oversimplifies the topic... There's definitely a conversation to be had about depictions of abuse and romance, and equating that representation with "supporting rape" kind of paints it a little too black and white, so to speak.
The emotional abuse is what people are pissed off about though. It's not that people are in denial about the 'consent' factor, but it's the fact that it glamourises emotional abuse and manipulation, and is basically disguised as 'kinky', which the BDSM community are obviously not happy with as well. Of course I don't think anybody supports rape by watching this movie, and I know that you are talking about the film only and not the books, but supporting the film brings revenue to the books, and the books are problematic at best. it's a tricky thing though, still love your videos, Christine
I've read all three books and I've never read Twilight. Yes, thats right I've not read Twilight but I enjoyed the movie. I liked movie Anastasia more than book Anastasia and I feel like the movie just plants the story a little better than the book.. if that makes sense.
This movie honestly just left me with a really bad feeling. I agree that there was really no rape depicted but just the all around abusiveness of the relationship and the bullshit that he was spouting to her...just did not leave me with a good feeling. I agree that the beginning with all the Twilight parallels was funny though.
Saying that the film "supports rape" is over simplifying to an equally dangerous degree. Both in books and film form, it romanticizes an abusive relationship. It normalizes that a girl with ZERO (sexual, or otherwise? does the film say that she's ever had a boyfriend before this?) relationship experience can "fix" someone who is much more experienced and deeply traumatized without any professional help. I couldn't tell from your review if they cut out all the parts about Christian's Mrs. Robinson-style rapist abuser from the books. HOWEVER from your review it seems that they made sure that INTHE MOVIE she gives verbal consent often, he actually askes her if she is ok with things/checks in continuously, he actually stops when she says no, etc. All of these things are drastically different in the book.... I said in a FB post that they would have had to MAJORLY re-write both of their characters for Christian to be anywhere close to romantic. IN THE BOOKS he starts out grooming her for abuse from page 1; there is so much more, just, awful-ness in the books. But again, that's the books, not the film. I just really hope that more people apply critical thinking while watching and reading this franchise and educate themselves on consent vs coercion. I am glad that you enjoyed it, Christine! I'm super grateful that you went so indepth with your discussion. Twilight has such a special place in my heart (re: friendships, internet communities of hilarious women, MEMES). I still refuse to add monetarily to either portion of the franchise but maybe down the road, with a RedBox freebie or a bottle of wine at a friend's place, I can watch and crack up over the fact that this all started with Edward and Bella.
People see what they want to see. I read the books without thinking of all the abuse talk and I didn't see abuse. The people who read the book wanting to see abuse saw abuse.
I think it's unnecessary for people to judge someone just because they go watch the movie or read the book if they themselves haven't seen or read it. Everyone's entitled to their own opinions so I think you're completely right about the fact that it's just rude and insulting to go ahead and say that to someone. I might actually watch this movie even though I haven't read the books. Great review Christine!
I'm not saying that by seeing 5SOG that you are condoning rape but I don't thing that as someone who hasn't read the books you can say there isn't any rape/ none consent in the franchise there is a lot of it contained within the book. For example, this is taken directly from the book, ' "No," I protested trying to kick him off. He stops. "If you struggle, I'll tie your feet too. If you make a noise Anastasia I will gag you." ' Yeah, so twilightesk romantic, consensual love.
Putting aside the controversy of whether it portrays unhealthy relationships and what not, Jamie Dornan, the actor that plays Christian Grey is so amazing in The Fall which is a BBC show . Both seasons are on netflix , awesome show!
I've read the books. There's no rape. Not sure what the 50SOG haters are referring to. Also if you think it's making a bad impact on young people who are going to see it, maybe you should accept that if they're going to see it, they've already been impacted. By all means, go ahead and don't see the movie out of protest; but seriously if you don't like it, don't watch a video about it. Common sense people.
In the books, christian explains to ana that she holds all the power in the relationship. He explains how the "submissive" is in control of absolutely everything.
Cristine I love your videos! Every single one of them. You just make me so happy and I always look forward to when the next one will come out. Keep doing what you do, and don't get discouraged by the hate. You are the one who made me love reading and I can't thank you enough for that.
Thank you so much for saying something about the people who keep saying that supporting this movie is supportive rape and abusive relationships. there is a HUGE difference between what happens in the books and an abusive relationship. This is is FICTIONAL story and if these people that keep saying those things actually kept an open mind and took the time to read the novels than they would see how wrong they are.
I felt exactly what you felt! With the rape issue, people are quick to the conclusion that rape occurs in the book without verifying it for themselves. It saddens me to think that people speak out about topics they have little to no knowledge about.
Your review made me laugh so much!! I think people don't understand that rape is different from an abusive relationship. The book/movie is about an abusive relationship and that some people read it because of the hype and to know what is about but that doesn't mean you support those things. Sorry for the English :)
To start this off I'm going to say that I'm only 16 and I know everything there is to know about fifty shades of Grey. I have not seen the movie, and I can't wait to see it. Second I love how you explain that its not rape because Anna did know what she was getting herself into. I mean Christian even asked her in detail, in the book, if it was ok. Third I will only admit this once, I'm a big twilight fan, the way you were saying how this book series is a fan fiction of twilight I can see it now. ( Admitting that broke my heart) Fourth, out of everyone who thinks the book series is bad ( I for one really love all three) I just appreciate that you at least went to go see the movie. Rather than judge it and make it seem like women abuse.
I was laughing so so much. I haven't seen the film or read the book, but still wanted to hear what you say and I'm definitely not sorry. Also the couple behind you anecdote? That was so funny. :,D
I love this. Like, seriously, people keep saying it's rape and he's so abusive, and everything but he always asks for her to accept, and if she says no, IT MEANS NO! You keep saying that you don't know what it's like in the book, if he does it despite her disagreeing or goes way too far with it, but he never does, it's pretty much the same thing: no is no, an he will stop. Also, all the remarks about how it is the same as twilight are sooo true, just Taylor (the driver) is not Jasper, he comes along later on the second book. Thank you very much for making this video, I wasn't a big fan of the movie but that's just because I was expecting so much more. It was good, though. Love the video :)
christiiiiine! just wanted to ask a quick question, you didnt say on goodreads that youve started is so hAVE YOU BEEN READING THE RUBY CIRCLE? im currently reading it because i couldnt find it anywhere but i cannot wait for your booktalk on it!
This was way more hilarious than I prepared myself for. It came to a point where I didn't even heard words, but just laughter and a sort of sad joy. It was amazing, thank you for this video.
The thing about this film is that, while I don't think that their relationship can be classed as abusive, it is definitely extremely unhealthy, so I can understand why people are boycotting the film. However, I also get the sense that the film KNOWS that they have an unhealthy relationship. Their affair is not glorified, or presented as "normal". What it shows is a story about a woman and a man who try to make it work, but in the end they're just not compatible and have to end their affliction with each-other, so I can't stand by the argument that this film is PROMOTING any kind of ill-treatment in a relationship. I think it's actually doing the opposite. While Grey is a control freak, and a creep, and clearly quite overpowering, I never got the sense that he was abusive or manipulative, just that they weren't right for each-other, which the film comes to address in the end. Obviously the books are very different, but thats a whole other thing.
My roommate and i were there like "How can a thesising college student not have a computer, is she writing her papers by hand?!" It was definitely hilarious and very much twilight. I was so uncomfortable every time she bought the pencil to her mouth. It was not an accurate representation of BDSM relationships, but i wasn't expecting it to be having read the book. There was a lot of emotional abuse and i don't think Anastasia truely understood what was going on. I had a lot of problems with the film and probably won't see it again, but it was still entertaining and your commentary is awesome :D
You're so right christine! The story (the books) are ALL about her changing christian. The character development IS SO HUGE in all the books, it's so nice to read. Honestly, people need to give the books a chance. They're not what everyone says it is. Yes, it's explicit. That's it.
I've only watched the first half of the first Twilight movie and I could pinpoint characters and scenes from it XD Your review was awesome, and I was literally making sarcastic comment every five minute xD
See in the books, she'll tell him to stop or that she doesn't want to but he wouldn't and she often says that he both emotionally and psychically abuses her. That's why I personally hate the books. They toned it down for audiences though.
Haha! Christine you literally read my mind after your spoiler warning. I was like, _"I have no intention of watching this movie but I'm still going to stay!"_ And then you were all: _"But if you have no intention of seeing this film why not stay?!"_
Jamie Dornan had it in his contract to have no full frontal and from another review I read that while Dakota Johnson is topless a lot, most of it is strategically choreographed. Again, from reviewers, there's about 20mins of sex scene/nudity in the whole movie. Also, from Christine's review, it seems that they toned down a LOT.
LMFAO Christine!!! You always crack me up, but this was over the top hilarious. You are absolutely right-- it IS Twilight. I've read the books and the first one got thrown across the room more than once because I couldn't take the plagiarism. There are phrases and descriptions straight from Twilight and I couldn't understand how no one had been sued over it. It does get slightly less Twilighty as they go on. I'm glad you enjoyed seeing it, because ultimately that's the point.
You just made someone like me, who didn't read the book and had major poor judgment of it, want to see at least the movie. Thanks for being your honest awesome self. :)
When she faints "classic bella" , the more you point out the twilight references the more im remembering them. Rita ora was so Alice. 100%. I liked the awkwardness in some of their conversations. P.s. I do not support rape or abusive relationships. If you know someone or are in some sort relationship like it, please seek help or tell us, we are a community, not judgemental or narrow minded people.
I was unsure about seeing the movie cause I thought it might make uncomfortable (and it probably will) but you saying that in the movie (I haven't read the books and I don't plan on) Christian doesn't feel that threatening and that there's always explicit verbal consent makes me feel like I might go see it, if only cause I'm curious and I wanna be able to have a conversation about it that isn't based off of what other people say.
I literally didn't even realize how much this is like twilight until you pointed out all these similarities ! omg I love I'm on my laptop in the library laughing out loud right now from this video LOVE IT !
Cringeworthy for me was any scene with her mom... I mean, they might as well have just gotten the woman who played Renee because there was literally no difference whatsoever. And that piano scene. Oh my god, so many Twilight flashbacks. Favorite scenes were the drunken phone call, the interview "are you gay?". and any other scene where Johnson used her charming awkwardness. I love your review and agree 100%. It wasn't rape. And no one should be condemned for watching a movie. Ridiculous.
At the end where you said it starts to get to the New Moon part, that's exactly what happens! After that it's that whole part where Bella is depressed because Edward left.
I just found your channel... searching reviews for fifty Shades of Grey of course. And I agree with you. I didn't read the book either. BTW I love your personality xoxo keep being you girl. Also where are you from??
I agree with you Christine, I haven't read the books either and I'm not planning to but I want to see the film! I don't think it means I'm supporting rape because I'm not, it's like saying watching Criminal Minds supports murder. I also understand people who are against it though, especially if you've been a victim of abuse.
Haven't seen the film but I've heard really good things about it so far and I totally agree with you about the whole rape and abuse thing! It's so funny when I would hear people ranting about it and then when I tell them it use to be Twilight fanfiction they get so surprised aha. I think you're really going to enjoy the future movies!
I attempted to read this book a while back but just couldn't get more than a quarter of the way through & I had no desire to see the film. Having said that, after seeing your review & the hilarious Twilight comparisons I might have to see it at some point. Probably won't pay to see it at the theater though.
the book was actually written as a fanfiction of twilight but she had to put it off the internet because it was too sexual and abusive so she changed the character´s names and fifty shades of grey was born :D
LOL I love how you focused this review on how similar to Twilight this is. Trust me, it's just the same in the books. The parallels are astounding!! I still haven't watched the movie but that's exactly the way the 1st book ends. The reason it feels choppy is because the original fanfic was what now comprises book 1 and book 2, so all EL James did was literally split it in two parts and label them Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker. The last book, Fifty Shades Freed, was the sequel to the original fanfic, originally named Master of the Universe part 2. So yeah... it REALLY really is Twilight alternate universe. It's Chedward and Anabella LOL.
I agree with you on every single point! I was laughing throughout the whole movie tbh just because this was so twilight and also because most of the scenes were so stupid(the toast scene and also the way the just jumped straight into that kind of realtionship) .. Ana annoyed the shit out of me and i mean she was more annoying than bella was in twilight idk hahaha. Dakota wasn't really good at her acting in my opinion.. the only one who fit in the movie was Jamie because he had that intimidating look and i don't really know how to say it.. it seemed like he really did prepare himself for this movie and his role. Another thing was that i couldn't help but feel like Kate and Ana looked really really old in the movie. I mean Ana is supposed to be 21 in the movie but she looks like she's 40 and acts like she is 16 , Kate was more mature but she also looked old tbh. All in one the movie wasn't so bad but it also wasn't amazing. Probably will watch the 2nd movie though but not in cinema.. that's too expensive for a movie like that and i would feel more comfortable watching this without other people haha Also the poeple who haven't read the books or watched the movie are really judgemental without having a proof of their assumptions.. Believe me Ana is REALLY happy to do these things with him (the way she giggled most of the times when he slapped her ass n'shit was pretty self explanatory) and she's more than willing
The movie is very faithful to the book! People are so ridiculous saying who enjoyed the book/movie is supporting rape! God damn, they discuss a contract!!! How is this not consensual? Ana tell what she wants and don't want in ALL 3 BOOKS! And the most bdsm stuff are in the first one! Then they start a real relationship based on their love. I get so mad in any kind of prejudice, people should be allow to like whatever they want and don't be judged by it! And also, I'm all about women doing whatever they want with their bodies, it's their life and no one is better than anyone to judge! Ps: and that part when he says "I'm incapable of leaving you alone" IT'S THE SAME LINE THAT EDWARD SAYS HAHAHAH
If I were Stephenie Meyer I would fill a lawsuit. and true she says yes to everything that he did to her. She never safewords till book 3 and he stops immediatly to take care of her.
I do agree that everyone should be able to watch whatever they want, but it's also important to point out when something is problematic. (Disclaimer: I have read the book, and trust me, it is problematic.) I myself do not plan to spend my money on this movie for personal reasons, but I don't think anyone is necessarily supporting rape or abuse by going to see the film. The important thing is to acknowledge that there are problems with the way Ana and Christian's relationship is portrayed. As a lot of people who have read the book will point out, the biggest issue isn't even the sex in most cases, it's Christian's behavior and treatment of Anastasia. He obsesses over her, he stalks her, he interferes with her personal relationships - the list goes on. And it DOES matter because people read these books and watch these movies and plenty of them will come out of it thinking that is romance. It's not. It's abusive behavior. Whether you want to see the film or not, it's so important to acknowledge that. I'm not saying liking the movie makes you a bad person or anything like that - not at all. I just think everyone should go into it knowing what to expect and understanding the significance.
I think that people really need to reserve their judgements of the film/book until they've gone ahead and experienced it for themselves. I'm tired of people hearing crap about things and not even trying to investigate further. Yeah, it might be true that the books support an unhealthy relationship, but I won't know that for sure until I read/see it myself and make a personal judgement call; I think y'all should do the same.
I laughed so hard at the scene when she walked out of his office the first time in the rain because I remember what you said during the trailer review about her having an orgasm. But yea I cringed too durring the belt seen even when I read it in the book it was really hard to read. While I could never imagine myself ever being put in this situation because while it didn't feel physically abusive it was most def psychologically abusive on both ends, from both him and her. But I think that's the point because it's suppose to be this "passionate love" that is tragic. And I am glad to finally see someone disclaim the whole rape thing. In the past week a whole bunch of people on FB have just now started to talk about it without actually reading the book or even seeing the movie because they don't know how to think for themselves. But like you Indulged out of curiosity and for a good chuckle and I was not disappointed.
To confirm about the books, what you see in the movie is pretty much a watered down version of the book. And I'm definitely not saying that as a bad thing. It was a lot more tamed than the book, especially Christian's need to control. He was more assertive and "in your face" about it in the book. However, exactly like you said, I never felt like he would ever go so far with Ana that he would cause her serious harm. also, thank you about the grown woman comment. Everything that happened between Ana and Christian WAS consensual (in the book AND movie; that doesn't change). The minute Ana would say no (throughout the entire trilogy), it felt like a switch went off in Christian and he stopped immediately. As for the Twilight references, they keep coming as the trilogy goes on so be prepared. I don't want to spoil anything for you so I'll just leave it at that! Lastly, thank you for the Taylor comment; I was literally trying to figure which Twilight character he was and I thought Jasper as well!
MY FAVORITE PART OF THIS WHOLE MOVIE WAS THE BAR SCENE WHEN SHE CALLED CHRISTIAN. I COULDN'T HANDLE HOW FUNNY IT WAS. BTW I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS AND THIS ONE MADE ME LAUGH SO HARD WHEN MENTIONED ALL THE TWILIGHT REFRENCES.
I'm glad that you pointed out that the last scene was consensual. For people in a BDSM relationship they have a safe word for a reason. Ana was being stubborn and wanted to prove that she could handle it. If she had said "Red" it would have been over after the first one.
well, when I read the books, I didn't know it was a fan fiction of Twilight, but when I read some comments on the internet I felt so stupid because when I read the books I constantly thought to myself "wait, I read those scenes somwhere, but...where?" and when I found out, it was indeed hilarious XD
DUDE I am so happy about your attitude to this film. SO many people just like to hate it because it's popular to dislike it, perhaps because a lot of people feel uncomfortable and judged about saying they liked or enjoyed it. Like I wouldn't see it again, but it was well made, and it was interesting and entertaining, plus Jamie Dornan is really cute. The funniest part for me was when they were reviewing the contract, and she's like 'anal fisting... STRIKE IT OFF'
I loved the drunk scene. It wasn't over or underdone. It was hilarious and I was sitting there laughing so hard for that entire part. Ana was like, "Bye Christian." *hangs up phone* *turns to girl next to her in line for the bathroom* "I showed him, am I right?" F***ing dying of laughter.
One thing I think people need to understand is that reading a book or watching the movie does not mean that you support the action within that book or movie. I hated 50 Shades of Grey the book, simply because it was badly written. But I'll probably end up seeing the movie because it can't possibly be worse than the book. But by reading/viewing whatever occurs in the storyline, it does not make you a supporter of those things. I mean a lot of the movies we watch or books we read deal with controversial topics like abuse or negligence or homicides, etc. So by supporting those books/movies does that mean you condone those actions? Absolutely not. If the plot itself makes you as an individual uncomfortable, then I completely understand staying away from it. But to accuse another person of being a supporter of something so negative simply because they took interest in the story isn't a fair accusation.
I have no interest in reading the books and I had no interest in seeing the movie, but I HAD SO MUCH FUN WITH YOUR COMMENTS ABOUT TWILIGHT CHARACTERS POPPING UP THAT NOW I NEED TO SEE IT TO SEE THIS THINGS HAHAHAH
I actually loved it. Despite the similarities to twilight it really does have its own story that I think is even better. It makes me want to read the books.
Even though I don't love the twilight book I'm no hater of those who do. Having said that... Because of the fifty shades books I've started reading twilight and omg is so BORING. Bella is like so negative, insecure, self-center, and plain. I can't. I admit that fifty shades is not THE best effing thing I've ever read but I like Anastasia much better than Bella from the beginning. Anastasia is much more diverse and fun than little miss "omg I hate living with daddy and I hate rain and trees" but every human is entitled to their own opinion so what the hell do I know right?
Great review!!! I just hate that everyone is fighting over this movie and the people who go see it or don't support it. If people want to watch it, then let them and don't say rude things about them if they do. And for the people that don't want to go see it, for whatever reason they may have, that is fine too...
OMFG christine I completely agree!!!! I just got back from the movies and I was literally laughing at all the twilight similarities I think the worst for me was the "I'm incapable of leaving you alone" "then don't" -.- I yelled at the screen come on this is twilight! But as a person who read the book i was a bit dissapointed at how slow the movie was and I don't think you support rape by watching it there was only one incident in the sequel were he does do something w/o consent but its not that bad
I thought the same when I watched the Movie .. Like a lot of qoutes you just KNOW THAT THIS IS TWILIGHT FANFICTION ! I could not believe it ... I mean I read the First book and started the 2nd but this was a long time ago .. But really in the movie it is much more obvious that the "Story" was actually a Edward / Bella FF .
I read all 3 books and no rape EVER occurs. I didn't care for the film but omg I was laughing so hard when he takes her for a walk in the woods. I was like WTF this is so Edward and Bella bahahaha I couldn't stop laughing.Dakota did a great job tho!
i think the complaints about the movie shouldn't have been directed towards rape (the sex isn't actually the worst part) but the idea of a controlling emotionally abusive relationship (christian must have control over her entire life, where she is, what she does) and i haven't seen the movie so i don't know what they did and didn't include. the issue with going seeing it is helping to promote the idea that this is an "entertaining valentines day film" teaching girls that this christian grey type of guy is what they want and the emotional abuse is something to be celebrated because of the "romance"
I'm not that interested, based on the trailer and based on word of mouth. But I would strongly recommend the film SECRETARY with James Spader and Maggie Gyllanhal, which deals with the same kind of subject matter. A brilliant, moving, often funny film.
i've been attacked repeatedly in the comments so i feel the need to clarify: For the record - I understand and have understood since before I saw the film - why people are boycotting this movie - it does glorify an abusive relationship. I enjoyed the film not because i enjoy watching an abusive relationship, not because i am in any way attracted to christian grey i really don't like the dude, BUT because i love twilight and seeing twilight fanfiction put on the screen before me was hilarious.
i'm glad that even though you haven't read the books, you understand that EVERYTHING is CONSENSUAL.
when you read her thoughts in the book, it's definitely more obvious that she likes everything they do, so THANK YOU for agreeing with me :)
SO TWILIGHT IT'S RIDICULOUS
you've opened me up to so many more twilight references like omfg
i swear you should rename this video to "why 50 shades is literally twilight" because you hit the head on the nail ;D
watching this review i'm just screaming PREACH PREACH PREACH
i get sh*t on on twitter all the time for defending this book about how ana isn't always passive and christian isn't threatening or dangerous so THANK YOU FOR CONFIRMING THAT I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE
you are amazing and ily ok
THANK YOU!
Emma I love your videos! :D
I still can't handle it. How did this movie happen. When you were going over all the parts again, I was just laughing cause we were in hysterics over how Twilighty this was. GOLDEN RETRIEVER MIKE NEWTON! LOLOLOL! I just though of another, those girls at graduation who were talking about how hot Christian was, I betcha that was Jessica and Angela!!!
hahhahah that's an awesome review!! And so true!
I love Twilight, I hate Fifty Shades of Grey.
So if watching 50 shades of Grey means supporting rape, does watching Dexter mean you're supporting serial killers?
It's not rape, but there definitely is emotional and mental abuse.
The book, which I've read (for a paper about media portrays of abusive relationships), contains passages like:
“’No,’ I protest, trying to kick him off. He stops. ‘If you struggle, I’ll tie your feet.
“‘No, please. I can’t do this. Not now. I need some time. Please.” “Oh, Ana, don’t overthink this.”
“’Alaska is very cold and no place to run. I would find you. I can track your cell phone- remember?’”
“How did you feel while I was hitting you and after?” “I didn’t like it. I’d rather you didn’t do it again.” “You weren’t meant to like it.”
And by paying to seeing this movie or enjoying it doesn't make you a bad person.
Christine says in the video that she is basing her opinion on just the movie since she has read the books.
***** thank you so much for clarifying xx
I'd like to know how Stephenie Meyer's reaction watching this movie.
Saying "This movie supports rape" kind of oversimplifies the topic...
There's definitely a conversation to be had about depictions of abuse and romance, and equating that representation with "supporting rape" kind of paints it a little too black and white, so to speak.
Great review Christine! Totally agree with you :-D
thanks sasha! excited to see yours! =D
I agree.
50 Shades of Grey was not how I expected it. It was WAY WORSE :)
love the ambiance of the book candle tower thingy. really sets the mood y'know.
The movie always includes consent. Rape is without consent. Therefore, the movie does not support rape. Done.
Did it feel like a Twilight Parody to you? 😂 'cause thass what I'm getting from this review, haha!
BAHA YES IT REALLY KIND OF DID XD
I think it's unnecessary for people to judge someone just because they go watch the movie or read the book if they themselves haven't seen or read it. Everyone's entitled to their own opinions so I think you're completely right about the fact that it's just rude and insulting to go ahead and say that to someone. I might actually watch this movie even though I haven't read the books. Great review Christine!
I'm not saying that by seeing 5SOG that you are condoning rape but I don't thing that as someone who hasn't read the books you can say there isn't any rape/ none consent in the franchise there is a lot of it contained within the book.
For example, this is taken directly from the book,
' "No," I protested trying to kick him off. He stops. "If you struggle, I'll tie your feet too. If you make a noise Anastasia I will gag you." '
Yeah, so twilightesk romantic, consensual love.
My roommate and i were there like "How can a thesising college student not have a computer, is she writing her papers by hand?!"
It was definitely hilarious and very much twilight.
Guys, is it true that this book was first written as a fanfiction, and was indeed in a webpage of fanfictions?
I'm just curious, how graphic is the movie really?
It is not to bad. People make it out to be much worse that it really is.
Lol, I didn't think it was anything like twilight.
I love your reviews
Have you read the Ruby Circle yet? Please do a book talk! I'm reading it now!
christine you are literally reading my mind! great video
I wasn't going to see this movie, but now I want to see it just to see the twilight similarities
Christine, I cannot go through the entire video without me laughing. Literally one of the funniest video of you I've seen.
Seeing as I am 15, I will not be seeing this movie anytime soon but gosh I so want to just because of the Twilight parallels!
I'm crying at your comparisons, lol. So perfect.
You look like Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy the Vampire Slayer:)
Probably will watch the 2nd movie though but not in cinema.. that's too expensive for a movie like that and i would feel more comfortable watching this without other people haha
Also the poeple who haven't read the books or watched the movie are really judgemental without having a proof of their assumptions..
I'm crying, this review is hilarious! Great job Christine!
The only reason I actually wanna see this is because of how similar it is to Twilight. Twilight's one of my faves.
I kept waiting for him to say "as if you could outrun me! " during the scene in the forest xD
When I was younger I thought 50 shades of grey was going to be about an artist drawing a face with 50 shades of pencils LOL!
OMG this entire video was hi-larious "Oh. Has New Moon just kicked in? Is that what's happening?" Baaaahhh. I dieeeee
"where have you been?"
"WAITINGGG"
I'M FUCKING DYING OF LAUGHTER OMGGG XD
OMFG christine I completely agree!!!! I just got back from the movies and I was literally laughing at all the twilight similarities I think the worst for me was the "I'm incapable of leaving you alone" "then don't" -.- I yelled at the screen come on this is twilight! But as a person who read the book i was a bit dissapointed at how slow the movie was and I don't think you support rape by watching it there was only one incident in the sequel were he does do something w/o consent but its not that bad
Twilight Adult version. The good thing about this film, it's faithful on the book. I'm going to rate the movie 6/10.
This review made me laugh so hard. I never thought of some of those Twilight comparisons but it's so true. Haha!
That was a very satisfying review to watch because she made it so light hearted and she legit had a good time which is great.
Lol your description for this video is hilarious. Can't wait to see what you think - I'll wait to rent I think.
Totally agree! The book is the same way....everything was done with Ana's consent.
i think the complaints about the movie shouldn't have been directed towards rape (the sex isn't actually the worst part) but the idea of a controlling emotionally abusive relationship (christian must have control over her entire life, where she is, what she does) and i haven't seen the movie so i don't know what they did and didn't include. the issue with going seeing it is helping to promote the idea that this is an "entertaining valentines day film" teaching girls that this christian grey type of guy is what they want and the emotional abuse is something to be celebrated because of the "romance"
I'm not that interested, based on the trailer and based on word of mouth. But I would strongly recommend the film SECRETARY with James Spader and Maggie Gyllanhal, which deals with the same kind of subject matter. A brilliant, moving, often funny film.
You're an adult, I'm an adult. If you or I want to watch/do something, then that's our prerogative. Screw the haters.
