Someone explain to me how this works, it's just electronic signal being modified by this analogue machine (in some ways) and then sequenced with that other white machine? Not sure how to explain what I mean, hope this makes sense.
You’re pretty close. I’ve put another video together where I walk through some of how the sequencing works. Everything in modular synths is just a voltage (in the -12v to +12v range). We specifically define notes to be on a 1v per octave scale (which is what my melodic sequencers output). Those inputs typically drive the frequency of a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), which outputs a note at a desired pitch. The white thing with buttons is my drum sequencer (sort of - it can do more than that!). Each trigger that module sends just tells my kick drum or snare to start playing at a given time.
Once you have an audio signal, you can either mix it as an output you hear (usually via a voltage controlled filter to add some character), or you can use as a control voltage to modulate something else at audio rates. Once you have one sound, you add the next, then the next, and so on. The music that comes out, depends on the way in which you’ve patched the system together. It’s basically just a giant Lego set you can use to make sounds. Build it one way, it’ll sound like that. Patch it another, and it’ll be completely different
Respectfully you got to add in Rob's creativity and remarkable ability to not just make sense of this, nor even to control it, but really to master it so well he can finesse this all into something genuinely great.
As someone who only knows the basics of how modular synths work but who has been interested in music for a while. I find this absolutely fascinating and very impressive. To someone who doesn't know anything at all it might as well be the cockpit of an A320 at this point. But, just like the more pilots have experience the more everything seems obvious, I imagine the more you have experience in this the more everything seems familiar. It's absolutely amazing, thank you
Im a fan of techno music. But, I have never heard something like this. This melody... It is like Im entering in heaven❤ I would love to hear your masterpiece in live!
In 1969 there was a track "Several species of furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a Pict" by Pink Floyd. Move over, now we have "Several species of forest critters dancing with a Bloke and his Mad Machine". A worthy, if not very worthy sequel.
This is wild. I genuinely cannot fathom how difficult it would be to build this, set it up and actually know how to make sense of all the knobs and switches. Impressive. 🔥
Dang dude. you really took all that equipment outside. It looks like it to me. I figured you just used a green screen. Outside really? Pretty cool. Thanks for the music and videos.
Everyone’s been asking that. I only had 74 subscribers 6 weeks ago. Wasn’t really expecting anyone to be that interested in what I do tbh! I’m going to take some pigeon steps towards that at some point soon :)
When you move your setup, do you unplug all the cables and them plug them back in on location ? Or do you try to move the huge machine all on it's own with everything attached ? Either way, another cool session of music !
There’s a backbone patch which is typically what I start a set with (just plumbs in the clocking, final mix and Fx chains). The last rig layout was a lot better (I only had to plug in 4 cables when I moved the rig, and I was good to go). This rig layout fixed a few problems with my drums, but now I’ve got about 20 cables to plug in when I move the rig. I might have to try and reorganise things a little bit. Ho hum! :)
Powering the synth is trivial - it all runs of 12v - so I have a stack of 50000mah batteries that have DC outputs. Typically if you can aim for 1amp per battery, you’ll get quite a long time out of them. Because I’m also running a pair of k12.2’s and a mixer here, lithium ion isn’t quite going to cut it! For these videos, I just ran a 500m extension lead from my mates off grid solar set up. (That setup can travel if needed - I’m currently camped out at a festival - and he’s bought 8 deep cycle batteries, 4 solar panels, and an inverter, all on the back of a flat bed truck. He’s currently using it to power his fridge freezer) Given the size of that setup though, it’s hard to recommend it over a generator!
@@robthebloke Thanks for the info! You're probably right that I won't be able to get away from using a generator for the bigger stuff (I'm looking to run amp/speaker/mixer as well). Mostly worried about flammability and noise pollution, not cost. Maybe an approach is to combine a battery + inverter & a generator to minimize time that the generator is running. Anyway, cool setup, enjoyed it!
Your music is insane. I do not know if you do this for a living but would you be down to make a track/sound effect or anything that me and my university mates would then place in a game?

Somewhere in the distance a group of hikers is madly confused as to why forest critters have the technology to make banger music.
😂😂😂😂
3 days ago you opened up the rabbit hole for me with "One big fat sound" and I've already accepted that I'm gonna be trapped in this hole forever
same here, haven't listened to anything else besides rob these past 5 days, best recommendation ever
Forest critters getting a treat
Love it. So beautiful
Absolutely amazed

To a forest creature, witnessing this scene must feel like a human encountering a Lovecraftian ritual.

Your vids will convince me to buy another moog studio 3 I swear it this is amazing bro!
oh this one is fucking amazing
Love the melody. Keep it up Rob!
Thanks for sharing
Wouldn't it be cool to do live music festivals like this, just low key events in your local forest. Bring back the illegal underground raves 🙏

How do you power your setup? would love to do something similar but hauling a gas generator around isn’t something I want to deal with

@@mattshilling in terms of generators, the smaller Honda ones are reasonably quiet (though it depends on how many subs/tops you’re looking to run)
