Leupold CDS Update

- I took the Leupold CDS 4.5-14x40 out for the first time during the 2012 deer season. Awesome scope. I loved being able to adjust the range on the fly. As it happened, the deer I shot was at a distance. I used the old duplex system to bracket the deer and estimate the range. Then I dialed in the drop for the range using the CDS, and had venison.

Great video brother. I'm not new to guns but I am very new to rifles and scopes and all this new lingo, etc,. lol. I appreciate how you break it down and make it easier to understand. I can't believe some of the pricing for certain items. I thought I'd grab a rifle a scope and start shooting......man was I wrong. I am really glad I stumbled upon this Leupold CDS system because I'm too old to start learning too much at this stage of my life, lol. It seems like a very simple way to be fast and accurate. Right now I'm just gonna take my time and learn but I can't wait to understand it and start hunting. Thanks for a great video. God bless.
These scopes are awesome, I now own 4 of them. One on my 300 Mark 5 Weatherby 4.5x14x50, one on my AR 15 3x9x40, and one on my Grandsons 25 cal second gen.Benjamin Marauder "AIR RIFLE" a 3x9x40 on it. He just got his hunting licence a day before opening day, we have been getting up at 3 am to go hunting. Four times now to go rabbit hunting, I range them and he dials and shoots them. Going for head shots only, he doesn't miss to often LOL. Now I am waiting for the Freedom CDS 3x9x40, finally a reasonably priced scope. My others weren't this cheap, putting this one on his new Remington model 700 22-250. I have to tell you you folks I got hooked on these scopes after putting my first one on the 300 Weatherby, got my turret and went and and sighted it in. I only practiced out to 500 yds, that is a long ways out there and still could set it out to 800 or 900. I wanted a 1 full turn stop on all of the scopes, I am up their in age don't need to confuse myself. It was spot on 100, 200, 300 , 400 and 500 yds and saw no reason to continue, I hit that cow elk at 496 first shot and at finished up at 525 and the rest is history. I have taken a few mule deer with it, the farthest one out was 350 yds . It just takes the guess work out of the way, that is what I love about them.
Hi mate, just unboxed my Vx-freedom 6-18x40 CDS. I'm new to all this. Could you please help me out? How to zero the scope? can't find any vids abt it. Right now, it's on 0! so do i need to zero it? i mean everytime you mount it on a diff.rifle you need to zero it? right? ty
Don’t forget, you can utilize the CDS at ANY MAGNIFICATION!!!!! I have the VX-5 3-15x 44 mounted with a Spuhr mount, and it’s on top of my Christiansen Traverse chambered in .270 Winchester. I also use a RX-1600 TBRi-W, set to my load… using it combined with a CDS is like cheating, making it so easy to just put the crosshairs on where you want your POI. Super fast and super accurate… very much a hunters scope because all you have to do is concentrate on your shot
I use federal custom shops load using the Hornady ELD-X bullet 145 grains. I get pretty consistent .39 MOA at 200 yards… Match accuracy in a hunting bullet
The down sides are that you’ll need another freezer and your taxidermy bills will ski rocket
Good Looking Rig setup. I too enjoy the CDS systems on my Ruger 270 (3-9x40) and Marlin 243 (4-12x40)
Yeah I havent really heard any bad about the Accubond. I tried the 130gr fusions that are similar but not tipped and it mushroomed spectacularly with 106gr recovered wt. I recovred a 110ttsx this year and it weighed 107gr and mushroomed great. It traveled through the rump to the offside shoulder. Impressed me for a 110gr bullet. Keep up the great videos.
I was mistaken in my earlier reply. Yes, the custom dials have a zero stop. Leupold will ask for the range where the rifle will be sighted in (ie zeroed). That is where the zero stop will be placed. The dial only goes up one complete revolution. The zero stop limited both the forward and rearword travel.
You got it. A 270 Win, Ruger M77 MkII sporter in left hand (yeah, I had to special order it).
So far I have been shooting 130 gr Nosler Accubond bullets handloaded to about 3000 fps. I have taken four deer with that bullet. In my experience, the bullet will pass through a broadside deer if shot inside of 100 yards.
I can't say I get 1 MOA out of it, though.
I have recovered exactly one bullet in those 4 deer. Had good weight retention.
yes, provided you have the custom dial. I made the sheet after there was a mix up at Leupold and I got the wrong dial... The stock dial doesn't have the yardage.
I have a ver x 3 on my ruger no.1 25-06 rem. Love it fine hair cross hair .
Excellent review and good information. I've been thinking about a CDS for my rifle and does the +/- for the elevation and temperature a good starting point.
Nice video thanks
Just ordered a CDS scope for my sendero 270.
Good system.
At around the 5 minute mark you mention your bipod as a snipe pod? Can you attach a link to this bipod. I can't seem to locate it. Thank you. BTW I just ordered a Leupold VX-R 4 to 12 with the CDS system. Your video was helpful in my decision!
Yes. I keep thinking I should move up to a bigger round. But, the 270 has been flawless for me. I can't think of a good reason to switch. The 270 is devastating on every deer I have shot, rifles are light, and recoil is mild.
bgallaher77 , what model scope are you using on that Ruger (special order Lefty).??????
I have the exact same scope sitting on a Ruger Hawkeye 270win with the cds.
My setup is almost 100% identical to yours except mine has a regular wood stock
hi, do you get parallax at longer ranges? I'm contemplating whether to get similar to what you have or the one with a side focus. cheers
What do we do with the original dial it came with ?? After getting the first free one tks.
I just purchased & Mounted one on my AR-15 it's a 3-9×40 ...I've not tried it out Yet
Is that a Ruger m77? I love the .270win for deer. I load the 110gr barnes ttsx at 3300fps and it hammers deer. It is not my most accurate load but will consistently shoot sub-MOA in my Model 70.
Rafaone, Hi how you get those number of clicks ❓can you tell me what to do with my .300 Win Mag with ammo 168 g bthp ❓actually I zeroed at 100 Yards right at the bull eye. Thanks
Someone had to do the home work for the 450 BM BLACK Hornady bullet, Do you have the chart you would like to share?
Left hand a-bolt medallion in .270 is what I shoot, love it! Will the turrents work on my leu old 3.5x10x40 vx3 with duplex reticle? Do you have a contact #?
I'm getting the vx5hd with custom dial system but I hunt at a lot of different elevations so do I need to buy multiple Custom dials? And also I am trying to make a cheat sheet range card like yours for my rifle but I'm not understanding MOA. If my rifle is sighted in at 100 yards than wouldn't it be 4 clicks in 1/4 moa to get to 200 yards? Why is it 1.25? Sorry just trying to understand
Check out this video for a Drop and MOA tutorial. ruclips.net/video/SmDDPqvcttk/видео.html
The elevation is +/-2000 feet, so one dial should do the trick for most hunting.
Because ACTUAL measurement of MOA is calculated 1.2555 inch.
Hope that helps.
@@jerrywells8072 no. 1 MOA is 1.047”
With the custom CDS, what is maxium yardage? I have same scope in gloss.
I cannot recall exactly off-hand. It is well beyond realistic hunting ranges, on the order of 600+ yards. The dial has a zero stop that limits the dial to one revolution.
Ahhhhhhhh!!!!...Ten Thousand feet per second!!!..I want that 308!!!...
Take a 300 rum, and Compress 150 grains of bullseye powder, and put a sabot accelerator on top with a ap. 22 round in it.... You MIGHT get 900fps....
Are you gonna really lock tight your focus nut in place n why
Why are you dialing backwards to 300 yards???
I have a Ruger Precision in 6.5 Creedmoor. Can I get a Custom turret for farther than 600 yards
The dial has a zero stop that also limits the dial to a single rotation. I have not looked and counted, but you will be limited to the drop allowed by one rotation of the dial. You can offset this with a canted scope mount, but if you were to go that route then a regular scope like a cds isnt going to fit you needed.
bgallaher77 Get a Leupold VX-5 HD or VX-6 HD. The turret does 2 full rotations. Over 1000 yards. Further than I wont ethically shoot game. If you’re shooting steel you can go out much farther than that.
Get a Leupold VX-5 HD OR VX-6 HD
great vid man how good id it at long range is it pretty accurate
robert Dowell I didn't test the scope extended ranges to see how accurate it was. All in all I have liked it. I like the 3.5-10 Leupold better than the 4-14. It seems like the black ring that surrounds the view when you are looking through the scope is thicker on the 4-14 compared to the 3.5-10. I have the scope on a 270, which isn't all that effective past about 400 yards, so it is more scope than I need. My plan right now is to go back to my 3.5-10 B&C for the 270. A rifle like a 300 mag, that hits hard past 400, might be a better match for the scope. That being said, if you have a range finder and setup to still hunt for a time, you can dial in the scope to exactly the right range based on your spot, using the rangefinder. That is pretty cool.
+bgallaher77 ok I will let u know as soon as I get mine its going on a 308 dpms im going as far as I can ill let u know how I do whats ur email
I need one
I think the CDS uses a different turret compared to the normal turrets. There might be an aftermarket dial that fits over the regular dial. You might call Leupold to find out (1-800-285-3701)
Does the scope have a zero stop?
Yes it does and they are solid
I bought a vx3i non CDS. Won't be doing that again! Get a CDS people! Even if you don't need the custom dial. Everything is great about my scope except for the turrets: too small, hard to turn, can't be removed/realigned, can't watch adjustments being made since you need to grip the entire turret to make it spin, MOA marks are on top of turret with no visible lines to line-them-up with the zero mark, and the zero mark itself is crap (just the opening of a little silver snap ring at the base of the turrets, you have to spin the snap ring to line-up with 0 MOA once sited-in, which could be anywhere around the turret). I have $80 Bushnells and Simmons with better hand-click turret designs.
Why does everyone say Leo...Pold when it’s pronounced Lew...Pold !!!!!!!!!!!!
Because that's how everyone read it. There used to be a time when everyone's information was attained via reading. I'm one of them and I though you all were saying wrong till I looked up videos of employees from Lee-apold speaking... turns out it must be so... "Lew-pold"
Ver x 3.5x10x40
Is this a first focal plane scope.
The
Derek G What?
Funny....they screwed by dial up too. Sent me a new one pretty quick but still fucked it up. Oh well.
When I hear LEO pold I cringe just a little everytime.
I hear ya anthony it's LEW (LEU)
You shouldn't have to have a sheet with how many clicks you need... The distance you need is written on the dial so just use a rangefinder then turn it to the distance shown and it should shoot dead on
When you say you are at zero, youre not at zero, you were at 1/4. When you say youre at 3-1/4, you were at 3-1/2.
Now
Damn, whoever the 308 turret was made for doesn't need to be dialing much elevation shooting 10,000 fps lmao!!!
1,020 FPS (subsonic), but I would like to see that 10K FPS bullet lol!
Pronounced LOO-pold!
I live in Oregon and have friends who work there.
It’s a German name. You would think it’s pronounced loipold. But I guess it’s whatever the company says it is.
With all due respect I believe you have a mistake on your cheat sheet. 5.75 MOA should be 23 clicks.
And 2 MOA is 8 clicks not 9
You shouldn't have to have a sheet with how ,any
There is no A in Leupold…. Sorry a pet peeve for me, I just had to say it… haha
Nonsense, who needs anything more than knowledge of his rifle ballistics the range and the size of the target for a holdover. Whitetails don't wait around for you to play around with your scope. Besides, how many times will branches and other obstacles out in the field brush against your CDS dial leaving you worried about your zero?
I would say I have had the opportunity to make good use of a ballistic drop, or CDS knob, about 10% of the time. 90% of the time there are only a few seconds to setup and shoot. More than half the time shooting off hand. I hunt in rolling farmland surrounded by small plots of timber.
Need a silver scope on that gun that black scope just throws the look way off
