I truly believe that we’re scaling between those lines and it’s never in one place and that’s perfectly normal. It all factors down to our experience, environment, age, and time. I think what’s important is self-awareness. Pausing to reassess ourselves and bring ourselves to awareness from our behaviors.
I love this video and have shared it with lots of leaders who are now sharing it with the people they lead and their networks. Although the concept seems simple, to actually locate where we are at any given moment, to truly see and take responsibility for where we are, isn't easy. I've been using a lot of the practices from the book and they are invaluable!
+Alison van Buuren we are thrilled to hear that you are part of this movement and appreciate your commitment to practice the commitments. Much gratitude for sharing our content to inspire more leaders to create an aware world.
Surely being committed to learning is a part of a commitment to being right. It's basically the point of learning. And surely threats do objectively exist, yet one can still question their beliefs (sometimes finding they were right already, sometimes not). And surely sometimes solutions to actual threats require listening and learning, being radical and exploring new ways of thinking. Personally, I simultaneously exist above and below the line. Maybe I'm above the line because I question the existence of the line. lol.
Great point @stefrost4029 This model appears very simplistic to me. No doubt to make the points clear and obvious. Life is rarely linear. We probably exist in both spaces simultaneously. Many time a day going above and below the line. I guess it might be where we get our refreshing or grounding from? Above or below the line.
This video is quite insightful. What really resonated with me was that our brains are wired naturally to be below the line. In other words, below the line is our comfort zone.
Thanks for this post! A location to remember, at best above the line, in order to motivate teams after being one self curious, open to listen and ready to put our old believes in question!
Below the line means trauma response is on. SNS is on. It is not in conscious control. Using things like FFTP (forward facing trauma therapy), SNS can relax and we can come to PNS (above the line qualities).
Sounds a lot like the Eightfold Path in Buddhism repackaged for Western audiences. "Below the Line" also makes me think of Tema Okun's "White Supremacy Culture". Lots of ways to describe these things. Quite succinct, good stuff
My army cadet sergeant sent this on our detachemnt facebook group to help the cadets be NCO's (i'll edit this in the future if this video helps me a NCO)
I like this overall, thank you for putting it out here. I have some quibbles. I find this a bit over-general. I think I am both above and below the line and it seems like any decent person is like that. Who can really say they are fully above the line? I know I have had times where I was almost entirely below the line, I don't think I've ever achieved such a state of enlightenment that I was fully above the line.
We agree with you. One moment I am above and the next I am below. We see that all of us bounce back and forth, often moment to moment so that it often feels like we are both. We don’t know anyone who is above all of the time.
@@dianachapman2130 @ArienHuckeba, I think this is depicting where we are in the moment of NOW, not all the time. It's a gauge for us to refer to and visualize at any given moment. Another way I've heard it put is to ask oneself in any present moment, "Where am I on the elevator? On a high floor where I have a better view, or on the ground floor or parking garage where the view is highly restrictive?" I think the illustration above, as she states in the narration at the end, is about the current moment, not always.
Exactly! I read that book when I was in my 20s, and no matter how they change the concept it all the same. However, I do like how they've given it a new direction.
A great video with an important message that many, many people need to hear and would benefit from. What a generous act to put this out in the world! I will share it with the people on my email list--they are great people and care deeply about this stuff.
Very much enjoyed learning this comprehensive concept and the profound difference between two zones. One should always strive to get above the line as growth only takes place when we are vulnerable.
I so appreciate your commitment to helping us develop conscious leadership skills. I've now watched most of your videos and read many of your blog posts. Absolutely top notch work. I look forward to reading and viewing more. Many thanks.

man I do sooo much "below the line" processing in my brain and so I don't project it (as much as I can as I'm always growing) and I didn't even know it.
A great video & concept. At the risk of sounding below the line, the threats to human beings were not dinosaurs. Maybe lions or bears would be a good tweak to the video especially when referring to brain science :-)
One thing I disagree with is that you lose any creativity when below the line, which is simply not true. Are we to dismiss the artistry of dystopian fiction by that metric, which often stems from a sense of worry and unease on the author's behalf?
Yeah but I think there is a difference between experiencing worry and despair, verses entering the playful and proactive mode when one gets the pen out and starts writing or finding dialogue. I don't think you can be in that play state of creation when you are worrying. You have to step away from the worry to begin the creation.
What a great specimen of corporate capitalistic propaganda. If you question authority with these crazy ideas about money, time, rights, etc you are just moody and there is definitely sth wrong with your attitude and in no way with the system, whereas if you are above the line in the land of vagueness you live happily with your ignorance. Let s take away all the responsibility of the system and the framework in which you live and place it all with you, the individual

Awesome video! We need to keep the fight and force our minds daily to be above the line.
I think this is very helpful, thanks. Just want to mention that I don't think you mean "speak unarguably" which means in a way that can't be questioned, which would be under the line. Not argumentative? Assert without arguing?
When we say, speak unarguably, we do mean to speak about things that are happening inside of you that are unarguable. These include body sensations, emotions and reporting thoughts that are crossing the mind. The thoughts are arguable but the fact that you are having them is not. You can learn more about this in our book, The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership.
I disagree with this because whilst most of this video bangs the nail on the head with the ideas around above and below the line it doesn't cater for environments of extreme stress and bad situations of an unhealthy workspace/environment, people and their poor performance that has a role on effect or consequences on the people around themselves, but rather a perfect scenario . There are so many more factors in day to day life that have an impact of someones mindset from financial through to the support or team network around you . this would work perfectly if all around you incorporated this into their daily routine. My 2 cents anyway
It's always the person that encourages you to watch this video that doesn't heed the advice in the video. The manager that shared the video with us the most toxic person.
This does not take into account "oppression", and we live under an oppressive divide and rule colonial based hierarchal state that will not last and we rebuild anew as I type. This state oppression we toil under does not give equal access to anything. This is true IF you have time or privilege, often both. IF we look at this politically, as in systems of power, then it can also be true..? Maybe. Still chewing on that one. respect.
I use this model to help re-center myself and maintain my own center of confidence and security in an uncertain environment. We may be in an atmosphere where we can't trust our leaders or our circumstances or the weather, but we can work on building confidence in ourselves and our ability to respond to what goes on around us in a way that's productive. It's a game-changer when we finally realize we can't control anything outside ourselves and come to peaceful terms with that. That acceptance of whatever comes reduces stress, and reduces the fight-or-flight response that comes from the world not meeting an expected result. That stress reduction increases our ability to build something useful from whatever circumstance we're in. This builds our ability to see the possibilities in a challenge. Forget making just lemonade from the lemons you've been handed. Make lemon meringue pie. Make zest for your lemon drop cocktail. Make an all-purpose cleaner. Make candied lemon peel. Every time we move past an obstacle by building something useful from it - or even just enduring it without damaging ourselves or others - we get stronger, more creative, and more able to tackle the next challenge.

Is there such thing as being in the middle? I fee that Im neither below nor above the line.
Nissi Gicalde it is our experience that in a given moment we are either above or below. However, the next moment we could flip to the other size which can give the illusion that we are in both or neither. The practice is to ask yourself where you are just for this "now" moment.
there is no line, above or below... as long as you are somewhere then you are somebody [a person= ego] and you cannot be everywhere as no body, free of any line limiting kind of concepts
I think that my main issue with this is that the positions are not mutually exclusive. It's a classic case of black/white fallacy.
It may be an issue with the language used, but it is definitely possible to be interested in being right AND being interested in actively learning. Being right, at least in an objective sense, is a product of learning. There are certain truths that are non-negotiable, and negotiating them just demonstrates agreeableness to a fault. The real line in between is being able to quantify that you are right. It means that you have tried everything that everyone else has suggested in addition to what you have found to be right, and only the one that is right has worked reliably. It's basically the entire premise of the scientific method, to create reliable predictive models of how things work. It's one thing to obstinately assert that you are right because of some uncontested tautology, and another to have done the learning and come to the conclusion that you are right. Then you move on to learning the next thing.
And even if we assume that the three items above the line are each mutually exclusive to a counterpart below the line, there is still the fact that there are combinations.
Then there is the idea that you are supposed to be completely receptive to other ideas above the line. If everyone operates above the line, then who is supposed to challenge ideas? You need to be in the middle - you need to be able to make a strong case for what you believe, but be willing to reconcile when what you believe is demonstrated to be wrong. listening to a conversation is just as important to speaking.
I DO get what this presentation is getting at and the broader idea is definitely a good one. I love exploring and listening to new ideas nonstop and I don't really put too much stock into getting worked up about other people, and I think I'm better for it. I think my main issue is with the reductive simplicity of stating it in a black and white manner. It opens up room for antithetical thinking that the people below the line are the problem, when thinking that people below the line are a problem IS thinking below the line. While the video doesn't explicitly come out and say anything to the contrary, I think that it is important to emphasize that individuals need to hold themselves accountable for their own orientations on their own, and that the goal is a group of individuals that each bring themselves to the table rather than having to be told where to sit.
