Every young musician starting out needs to listen to this version. Producers have always used various tricks (and always will) to help make a recording sound perfect, because why would you settle for anything less than perfect? Of course, pitch correction is much easier when it's automated like it is today, but they were using every tool at their disposal at the time and producers will continue using every available tool.

They used all the tools that they had available to them in that era -- splicing together different takes, layering up. etc. If they had modern tech back then, they would have used modern tech too because the job of a studio producer is to output the best possible recording of a song. Slight fact check though: it was not "impossible" to correct someone's voice before Antares came along. As early as the 1940s, producers have used tape speed adjustment to make corrections to a take. That being said, if you were working with a legend like Freddie it would probably be easier to just have him record another take if you spot an off note than to go through the tedious work of correcting it in the mixing process.

@@d_g3147 Exactly -- the reason the didn't use autotune wasn't some kind of ethical opposition to the use of studio tools, its just that that particular tool hadn't been invented yet.
They used all the tools that they had available to them in that era -- splicing together different takes, layering up. etc. If they had modern tech back then, they would have used modern tech too because the job of a studio producer is to output the best possible recording of a song.
Slight fact check though: it was not "impossible" to correct someone's voice before Antares came along. As early as the 1940s, producers have used tape speed adjustment to make corrections to a take. That being said, if you were working with a legend like Freddie it would probably be easier to just have him record another take if you spot an off note than to go through the tedious work of correcting it in the mixing process.
