I like that the surface is harder, since you unlock it later it's normal that's it's harder, i don't think it needs any other explanation
You are a native of the underworld barely being able to stand at the surface after using a hex and also failing to using it as indicated by the ethereal hand. The underworld is already counquered, a domain of chronos, and being rebuilt in his whim. Most of the forces is in the surface.
was finally able to beat the surface at 32 fear today thanks to your fear guides and watching your different builds over time. Yes the surface was more difficult but the victory feels soooooo rewarding. I wouldn't change a thing

I swear, every single time Dan uploads a Surface run he gets Medea. Meanwhile I've run into her probably like 5 times total. Am I missing something, or does she just hate me?

TBH the difficulty/annoyance of the surface boils down to a few enemy movesets and features which when combined become a real nuisance. From the very tight layout of the ships in Thesaly combined with volatile oil covering most of them, to the sentry guys later on which love using shields + orbs out of nowhere, and stuff like that. It's but a few minor tweaks to make it much more tolerable. But yeah, definitely made to be harder.
I just need the dragon enemies to have sensible fire hitboxes, those are not readable at all. They just sort of lock on and you can't tell where the hitbox is
Take one look at the bosses and it couldn’t be more clear the surface was meant to be harder.
The surface being harder makes sense to me, my only complain is that it's a bit *too* hard sometimes. The rift of Thesaly is pretty rough since its arenas are pretty small and they are filled with fire and enemies with attacks that cover large areas while also doing a ton of damage, and the vow of menace makes it even more absurd since Olympus' enemies also have a lot of health and strong and difficult to dodge attacks. Also, Prometheus is a harder boss than Chronos despite being the third region's boss and not the route's final boss, meaning there's still something even more difficult on its way.
Not only does it take some victories to unlock the surface but in the early going they make it a point to explain that Mel can’t go to the surface.
I’ve noticed that Dan’s favourite filler word (phrase?) is “do you know what I mean”, it’s fun to watch and see how many times he says in it a video lol
Anyways, I agree that the surface is hard, but also it can only be unlocked after playing a significant amount of runs, which I see as the game stopping the player from touching the surface until they’re at a decent enough skill level. I love that it’s difficult! Besides the mechs, I hope nothing else gets nerfed :p

Surface has smaller maps, enemies that hit harder and faster(or it feels like it). IMHO that's why it's harder, maybe it's on purpose and they'll get nerfed once the full zone is done.
If u think about it , melione isnt even supposed to be at mount Olympus , so maybe thats why its harder shes in the surface so she already is at a disadvantage , i like that its harder , makes you try harder , keep it the same
I think specifically Eris needs better tells for when she's about to use certain attacks. It always feels completely out of nowhere

the Prometheus fire waves pattern feels annoyingly slow when you've beaten him enough times, but for players' first few times fighting him you're gonna die, and dying to that attack is painful, i think the attack is just slow enough for people to get their first win on the surface, cause your first few times seeing it feels like it's too fast, but once you've learned it it feels like its way too slow, so realistically it's probably at the perfect speed to mesh the casual first timers with the hardcore high heat players and not make either of them too frustrated
I think they made it pretty obvious that it’s gonna be harder than the underworld bc you have to unlock it
My tips for winning surface. 300 health, and a legendary cast build like arctic gale and getting the timing right for the Prometheus mini game

I just got Apollos legendary on the new aspect of eos. Not very fast acting but fun seeing 2 floating orbs of death.
I'd be interested in seeing how hard it would be if prometheus's flames started before the indicators stopped showing up
I beat 32 fear surface like two nights ago thanks to Haelian videos. It took me probably 70 attempts (although I lot of those attempts ended very early). My only complaint are those stupid big sentries that like stunlock you to death, it took a long time to figure out how to deal with those. I also am still not sure how you're suppose to deal with Prometheus without taking massive damage. If they add like a boss after him I am cooked.

It doesn’t take a few wins to get to the surface. I did ten runs (not completed, died to Scylla )to get the materials to unlock the surface. Rn I’m like on the 50 ish run in general, still haven’t beaten either chronos or Prometheus but I have gotten close
Lore wise, I believe the fact that Melnoe had incant to be able to traverse the surface is a big indicator that the surface was going to be much harder to go through regardless. I think that was a given, and the fact that the past three runs were runs where I finally got passed Eris
For the surface, I've found that phase shift is the best boon. Especially for resident dickheads Charybdis, Eris and Prometheus.
The satyrs and mechs on Olympus also have consistenly heavy hitting attacks :,), Prometheus isn't a super hard boss fight, it just depends on how much damage you've endured beforehand.
I think the only issue with the surface is the higher damage enemies, which pairs really badly with certain Vow of Fangs multipliers. It makes the combat swingy and more RNG-dependent as opposed to just generally difficult.

im fine with the surface being harder, i just find olympus always finds a way to humble me 😢 up to 16 fear on all my other weapons while axe is still stuck at 6
I don't hate much about the surface, except for the fact that I may never encounter the god whose keepsake I specifically equipped for the Rift of Thessaly biome. 🤦🤦🤦 Idk why it has happened twice to me.
I don' know if you had done it or not, but can you do a complete ding dong run I mean all attack, special, cast and stamp pommed to the max. That would be funny.
Prometheus definitely needs some sort of speed nerf. Another roguelike that has multiple paths(Deadcells) feel like they have different difficulties whether that be tougher enemies, harder terrains etc.
Also the plot kinda expands and develops with more and more surface runs so obviously its gonna be harder like any other game lol, just this one has a gameplay loop so it might feel off for lack of a better term
How about maximum dodge run next?
We've done it a couple of times, it can't get as high as Hades 1 though so it doesn't feel as interesting sadly.

Are you playing on godmode? Against prometheus I usually take 40+ damage a hit. You seem to just tank everything.
Nope! It would show up on the victory screen if I was. Strength arcana very good.
Simon says part was interesting at first but after a bunch of runs is kind of a drag. It’s like an extended boss phase change.

I think it’s fine that it’s harder but it gets to the point of being unfair. I literally get stun locked into taking 90 damage and losing a death defy against a random mob. I don’t think you should be mandated to run optimized builds to get up there with no heat
Everything good in H2 came from H1. I'm 195 runs in, over 100 hours spent, and I'm realizing I don't like *any* of this game's trappings. The characters. The levels. None of it. Familiars are pointless and distracting. But the game mechanics are quite good.
