I like how you decided to listen to yourself, and put on your glove right when you thought of it. I’ve learned over time that it’s a pretty good idea to listen to those inner warnings 😂

Wow! This Cardinal is harder than I thought it would be, love the dog Doug. How about doing a carving of your dog? I think it would be a great project, and fun? I will watch this video again in broken down segments before I start my Cardinal carving since this is how I grasp things faster, I then start the video and carving 1 step at a time, rewind to make sure it's confirmed before moving onto the next step. I like the head turned more approach vs straight on because in real life all birds are turned by moving thier heads back and forth, very realistic! Great job Doug, and thank you for this project!👍👏💯👊

Doug the dowels are great. I started with a 5 foot dowel and carved the Bear coming out of the stump first and then cut it off the long dowel.
Now just working my way down the same dowel I will do the Cardinal next and then cut him free. I plan on doing this until I feel good enough to turn the dowel into a totem pole of Spirit Animals. Very fun, keeps it inexpensive, and a good way to take the long dowel and do 4 or 5 practice versions which I find allows you to try various paint configurations to get a version you are happiest with.
    Absolutely great tutorial. Thanks

Thank you so much for this tutorial!!!! You are very good at tutorials, first and foremost. Secondly, I am so excited to carve a cardinal (also a huge fan of those birds) and to be able to use this to create so many other birds as a quick little carve in the limited carving time I have. I think an American Goldfinch would look great with this concept. Please keep doing what you're doing. Coffee on me today. ☕Thanks again!

Just a note, in my search for material for walking sticks, I have found that the Alder that grows along the many beaver swamps on or near our property works great. Fairly easy to carve, wet or seasoned, abundant, and free. I enjoy your videos and your wit.

I recent started, and I'm carving my first bird from you idea about a Cardinal from a dowel. However, I decided to carve a Dove instead since my wife loves doves, also I'm doing it from a block of wood, she say it looks so real with the details of feathers. I also carved the claws and feet, the Dove is sitting upon a stump with the claws over the front edge. I see a lot of carvers using metal legs, feet and claws for birds, why? I know I put more work into the feet and claws. It has been time consuming but, I think this is one of my best wood carvings. I joined the chat on the 22nd, and thanked you for the ideas about the Cardinal. Anyways, I took picture of my progress now going on 8 days on this Dove, thank you again Doug. 👍💯🥳🕊

Thank you for this; I will give it a try; perhaps modify to a chickadee or titmouse; I have 3 children and 9 grandchildren; I have been looking for a piece to carve and give to each of them that would not break easily and was durable and small and simple so it could follow them throughout their lives assuming some of them may be living in small tight quarters etc. with multiple moves from one location to another. They certainly will not be likely to be doing that with a full size decoy or a carving with fragile legs etc.
