[4K] Red Dead Redemption 2 vs Red Dead 1 Graphics Comparison - 1899 vs 1911!

- Опубликовано: 18 окт 2024
- NOTE: Spoilers within! A special comparison between the old and new. Set 12 years prior to the original, Red Dead Redemption 2 spurs Rockstar to take imaginative steps with its rendering of the world. Its towns are less culturally developed, but the RAGE engine is eight years to the better in its ability to realise some beautiful locales.

use xbox one x for 4k not the ps4 pro. The ps4 does not run the game native 4k. I hear switching the ps4 pro to 1080 and turning off hdr helps a lot and is a better experience for ps4 pro owners. Thanks.
@@maddawgzzzz do you honestly think he doesn't know that?
@@maddawgzzzz... yeah, you learned all of that information from Digital Foundry. Why try and tell them something they taught you?
Steven Rose don’t worry, this kid has not idea what he’s talking about!
Please ask Rockstar if they can improove the PS4 Pro implimentation ? Thanks guys !
"last chance to look away" already showed john marston in first 3 seconds XD
It's not really obvious that it's John Marston though...
I'd have thought it was just Arthur with a long beard
If you play as marston in rdr2 isn't it 1907 instead of 1899
RDR 2011 is a beautiful game, even today
2010
XBOXONEX!
not when you play it on ps3 though. :P But to be fair, it feels like RDR2 when it came out on ps3
The endgame is 1907 actually
Actually
I bought an Xbox One X for RDR2 and I wasn’t disappointed
You weren't disappointed with a 30 fps shooter?
I would have been.
Same.
@@ebridgewater 30fps>>>>>0fps on PC.
I play the game not the framerate.
@@ebridgewater not everybody likes the same thing, and sometimes ppl are greatful to afford one console and most importantly play the fuckin game , so instead of bitching like 98% of ppl do , how about be happy for them that are playing this game on the best version on CONSOLES right now!!!!!
I'm a patient man. I can wait a year for the PC release.
It's not like there is a shortage of quality games to play in the meantime.
I wanted to watch this video 2 months ago, but I had to discover the world by myself and it took me 2 months to get to that point in the story ... and now I can finally enjoy the video. I hope Rockstar turns the assets into a Red Dead Redemption remaster.
Imagine after finishing RDR2, since you end up playing as john you play the whole story of rdr1 also
That may not happen but you get two massive new regions to explore. (Southern west elizabeth and new Austin) new strangers and bounties and an epilogue split into 2 parts across 21 missions honestly the john portion is huge. And way more filled out then jacks section in rdr1
RDR1 is the sequel of RDR2. If you loved RDR2 and never played the original, it's a great opportunity to buy an Xbox One X. I finished RDR1 years ago but I'll play it again as soon as I finish RDR2. Thanks to backward compatibility.
@@robertwagner8116 I have one. Just saying people should buy to enjoy all the story, if they liked the game.
I did it too but it made me extremely depressing, when i first played rdr hunting down the ex members of the van der linde gang was easy to do, they were just random targets i didnt care about. But after you have them as friends in rdr2 and you get to know them it just makes you feel miserable to come after them in rdr. You just keep thinking what a great time they had at horseshoe overlook...celebrating sean's return, drinking and together, watching each others back...
It's not is it? Thanks for the info!
*BEWARE THAT THERE ARE IDIOTS SPOILING THE WHOLE GAME ON THE COMMENTS, PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THEM UNLESS YOU WANT THE ENDING SPOILED*
thanks beb
Arthur dies and you play as John marston.
@@blankspace9189 i hope you feel good about yourself after this
My Xbox One X has got some extended use of late. Forza Horizon 4, and of course Shadow Of The Tomb Raider and RDR2 both look phenomenal on it. Still love my Pro, but finally starting to appreciate my X these days as well.

when you play john marston, the year is actually 1907 though im not sure whether the map changes between 1899 and 1907 in game
I replayed RDR last year, and after several years since I first played it, I was expecting it to start looking rough around the edges, as it's sometimes usual with video games.
But it still holds up very well for a video game that started development in the mid-2000s, it aged very well, I wasn't put off by old graphics tech while playing it! And how the Manzanita section in RDR2 looks, I think that's how everyone envisioned that place in RDR, your brain makes up the detail for what you know it's naturally missing!
you had to be a drama queen and put that mid-2000's there right? Yeah, the game started the development,I believe, in 2006... but so do many other games and some even longer than that... you do not start hearing people claming the dates where the games started the pre production(your case) or the production. So stop being a drama queen and call it after the release date like everyone does. The game do get updated and improved while in development.
What is next? Cyberpunk 2077 holds up very well for a game that started development in 2011. LOL.
@@soogepoola4327 3 yrs late but had to tell how lame you are
Blackwater makes less sense because at this point in RDR2, it’s 1907.
Well blackwater was founded in late 1899's. It makes sense
@@Nobodysurvivesevenonebit Really, well in the rescue Sean mission you get a nice view of Blackwater from a distance across a river. This is at the beginning of the game in 1899.
1907? RDR2 is set in 1899.
@@SPM0717 Not after you've unlocked the map of RDR 1. At that point the timeline has progressed further.
Yes Jack is 12 years old in the epilogue after Arthur dies and we play as John.
Not often you can actually see the progression of tech in video games over such a time. Very impressive and shows how far we things have moved forward.
I really love Rockstar's commitment to beautifully detailed trees. Those have to be so hard to model and they seem to do it better than anyone else
RDR1 looking mighty fine at 4K. In some scenes I find the clearer IQ of RDR1 to making for a more pleasing (if technical inferior) image. It holds up really well.
Really do hope they make another red dead , this has been amazing the amount of detail & effort put into this game is amazing the amount of content & fun you can have easiest money I've spent in a while AMAZING
I think the year should be 1907 when you play as John, not 1899. So, you are only 4 years apart from the original game
One thing for sure - music from RDR 1 stucked with me for years. I still have some tracks in my mind. While RDR 2 music is fantastic and I finished that game, I cannot remember much of the music while I remember RDR 1... I am not sure which game I like more btw... rdr1, gtaiv or this. For sure gta5 is on last place for me.... they cut down euphoria physics and the game got too whacky and crazy with 3 non interesting protagonists
I haven't been yet to the old RDR map, but is it true that there is almost nothing to do over there?
Basically. Some strangers, a few bounties, and fanservice.
This vid shows why this is one of the best and one of my favorite yt channels.
good stuff.
You know, it's funny how improving the graphics can make a game look overall smaller.
Even though RDR2 is obviously a larger game, it's hard to see that when you're comparing the remade areas to the original versions in the first game. It's easy to see in the comparison of Armadillo. The size of distant cliffs and mountains, coupled with that static DoF and that heat wave effect makes it look like a truly vast landscape is sprawling out before you.
In RDR2, everything seems closer. The first game made it look like you would have to ride for an hour to reach distant parts of the map, even though it would only take a minute or two in reality. The second game makes the ride look about as long as it takes.
Another game that really did scaling right, imo, was Mad Max. I normally had static DoF, but if you couple it with a competent heat wave effect and aren't too heavy handed with it, it can really add to the sense of scale you get when standing on a cliff and looking out over what is meant to appear like a vast wasteland or desert.
Thanks for all your content! And also thanks for the spoiler warning at around1:30 - I will continue this video in a couple of weeks then : )
GTA VI ce for next gen will look bananas
Bully 2 son
it wont be on next gen, they'll put it this gen because the console install base is already there. They care about selling the most amount of copies

Looking forward to the Revolver/Redemption 2 comparison video!
I was thinking, with the massive changes in some of the buildings, maybe they were burnt down and had to be rebuilt, was quite common that would happen and they could finish the rebuild in under 10 years...
Xbox X is amazing. It makes a decade old game look like a modern release in 2018
I really hope they take some time to remaster RDR1, in the near future.
I know the code is a mess, but after billions of earnings through GTAV and RDR2 combined, they could do it, as they said before, it is fixable, and they just needed the tech and manpower.
They could even port it to PC and it'd sell really well.
Just the thought of RDR at 60 fps makes me drool.
One can dream...
60 fps looks weird.
says spoilers in the title, literally has a spoiler in the thumbnail, good job guys.
I mean it really isn't a spoiler since John is with you the whole game and if I'm not mistaken that's a screenshot rockstar shared before the game came out.
That screenshot is old af lmao
@@MrKnaives i have an answer but i won't say it cause its a pretty big fucking spoiler, ending of the game kinda shit lol
At 8:02 you can see how Rockstar used this "distance fog" in the original game to give a feeling of, well, distance, and create the illusion that the world is way more sprawling than it actually is
Waitin' on that PC port like (◕︵◕)
Most likely won't happen
@@RchardMosqueda Most likely will happen.
Red Dead Redemption was mess to get working in the first place, PS3 only made that worse. So the port to PC would've been a nightmare. When the original development cycle was already hell.
The previous rage engine with GTA V has had near perfect scaling on PC with on of the best pc releases in years, all that work for a single game release. The game made shit tons of money on both Steam and Rockstar club. Without micro-transactions. then add the micro-transcations and its a cash cow.
Just greed alone would be enough for Rockstar to release the game, when you think that the next Rockstar game will come out for next gen hardware.
Also the official red dead companion app has lines of code showing a check for a PC version of the game, LinkedIn had jobs specst,it that was quickly removed and a site leaked to start orders for a PC version around december 2019. Also remember GTA V wasnt announced for PC on the original trailers but it was always planned
No red dead redemption for PC

honestly, the draw distance in RDR1 @8:16 makes the whole world feel a lot bigger than RDR2
That spoiler warning was a bit late there considering you showed John marston gameplay two minutes before you said it...
Honestly RDR1 still looks really good, and even better than some of the "modern" games!!
WOW this 4K image is amazing
*Checks the resolution*
WOW red dead redemption 2 looks amazing still in 360p
It does hardcore nearly every town in the game gets new buildings saint dennis gets extended entirely new areas spring up and railroads are completed trust me alot changes
The story timeline comparison is incorrect in the video. In the RDR timeline, the RDR2 epilogue and RDR1 are NOT 12 years apart (without going into too much detail to avoid spoilers)
Using PS4 Pro version of RDR2 only lights how blurry it looks... Glad I've chose the One X version.
PS4 Pro has better graphics. That’s why Rockstar showed PS4 Pro version for all the promotion and marketing materials.
@@ahrlj24, not even close to that.
Can’t wait to see the graphics on the PC release
I get you wanted to use a save that was paced with RDR 1. But please, you really need to compare RDR 2 on Xbox One X to 4k RDR 1 for true analysis when you catch up on One X.
I think that youtube doesn't do rdr2 justice. I have both games and I can say that rdr1 still looks great in 4K for an older game but RDR2 looks just insane. I think it's the best looking open world game ever.
I love playing red redemption 2 on my Xbox one x it looks extra crispy
Thanks for the spoiler notice, I played all week and I still did not get to blackwater back, when I finished the game I came back to watch this video
Playing this game on a base xbox one with a 4K tv and it looks great. I know I’m not getting any 4K or HDR but it still looks great to me. At no point have a thought it looked bad in any way.
X1X the Only place to play RDR & RDR2 in True 4k!!!
imagine how fable fans feel, the entire world would get revamped every installment.
8:51 I think this is due to video games wasn't allowed to have any color back then. The brown & grey era of video games.
Xbox One X is the ultimate Red Dead: Redemption console.
Cavey Möth It's the ultimate console for basically every multiplat until it gets replaced lol
As long as they dont release a pc version lol
Imagine if the Xbox Two X supported full backwards compatibility with Xbox One, Xbox 1, Xbox One X, Xbox 360, and Xbox Two non-X games! It would yet again the be the ultimate Red Dead: Redemption console.

@@nickabbott319 Yes, exactly. Go no further. Unless you like Halo, or uhh.. *snaps fingers* Gears of War.

RDR was nothing short of a masterpiece.
Does anyone else like the RD1 graphics? I know RD2 graphics are way more REALISTIC but there's something about RD1s graphics that is really artistic
It's a video game - every change is catering to the fun. You're overthinking it, yes a lot of continuity is present, but the primary choice is always what works better for the game. This isn't a Harry Potter sequel that needs to make sense 100%.
I have only one complaint from what I've seen so far, and it's the over usage of smoke effects filling the screen in many scenes making the overall picture look a little bit too soft for my taste. Sometimes it feels like they're trying to show off what the game can handle more than from an artistic viewpoint. It's like bloom effect in the early days, but a little more subtile than it was back then. I prefer clean and sharp textures. In comparison with the first game, watching the second it almost looks like I suffer from some kind of retinal damage or something. In forest areas the fog effects looks great though, as the sun shines through the trees.
You are right but thats incorrect. Thats not why its soft and muddy. Its the terrible Anti aliasing they are using. Normally TAA is great but here it looks terrible. Once it drops on pc im turning that shit off.
@@rage8010 I have this on ps4 and I can assure the game did not looks soft... I don't why in this video looks so soft.
@@soogepoola4327 Yes it does. I have it for base ps4. It was terrible. On the pro model it probably wasnt as bad but on base it literally looks like im playing the game with VERY smudged glasses on. I have for PC now and it looks beautiful at native 4k @60fps
Eh... Am i the only one who kinda prefers the sharper/grimmer look of the first one?
You said it's the same piano with the same carvings. The carvings are completely different.
RDR 1 was an astonishing achievement for its time and hardware.
Ps3 was $499 and Read dead was 640p. X360 was $299 and a year older but was 720p.
Now it's even worse...protato owners choose 1080p because of bad checkerboard and framedrops vs a rock solid 4K30 on X1X.
Im a pc gamer with a beast of a pc ( i7 + 1080ti on a 21:9 ultrawide). But il be honest. You cant beat a console for ease of comfort. I dont always want to sit at my desk to play a game. Sometimes id rather lie on the beanbag, put my feet up, have a beer and play a console. Now that RDR2 is out, thats what il be doing. Only thing - have to buy an xbox one x! With black friday coming up I should be able to land a deal. Also remember, consoles sell like hotcakes on the used market. Ive owned 2 ps4's and an xbox one and sold them when i was finished with them for not much less than what I paid. Il prob do it again to play this and a few other games.
im guessing most people will be spending their time in the RDR1 map online, i know i will be, its interesting they focused on trying to make the map fit canonically when the main story doesnt, the last chapter and epilogue feel more like a retcon instead of a proper prequel
Really squeezing Red Dead Redemption for everything its worth arent we
Luis Barragan it’s really not worth that much. But fanboys will be fanboys, right?
@@TheRedRaven_ Umm, no?

Am I the only one annoyed by the overuse of dust in towns for RDR2? It's just way too much and I'm certain it's what causes the frame dips in those areas. I'm sure if they toned it down it would improve performance my a mile. But I guess it's just me.
I dont remember original RDR looking this bad. It's like when you are trying on new shoes, suddenly your old pair that was fine up until then, looks like crap. :D
lol when the game looks better on the 360 than it does on the pro :p
Watching this on a 4K TV , it is insane how much better 4K Red Dead Redemption 1 on Xbox looks to the Red Dead Redemption 2 video on the right. The right side of the screen is extremely blurry compared to the crisp 4K to the left. Of course some scenes looks better in RDR2 on the right because the upgraded textures, and better lighting. .but for pure sharpness is waaay better in RDR1 on the Xbox on the left, compared to the PS4 (assume it is not captured on a Pro) to the right.
Have @DigitalFoundry accidentally included the Xbox One S version of the video to the right? Surely it can not be that blurry on a PS4 ???
It is explained early on it was PS4 Pro running the RDR2 scenes due to a fellow Eurogamer having a savegame which opens the portion of the map, running at its “4K” 1920x2160 resolution.
@@hyungwoo0312 - yes, but considering how extremely blurry it looks, I'm starting to doubt that is true.
Ok, so I know I will get hate but I think RDR 1 looks more realistic. Why do i say this? RDR 2 has so much blur and bloom and shit that it makes it look either like a oil painting or an old movie while RDR 1 looks much cleaner close to reality. RDR 2 is technically more advanced but it's just something that makes RDR 1 look more realistc, not necesarily better, but more realistic.
Instead of using this video to create conflictive comparisons between consoles, why can’t we just appreciate the amazing advances in technology this game has reached?
Amazing advantages in technology? On 5+-year-old hardware?

RDR 1 looks much sharper than RDR 2.... And I don't just mean because of the low level or anti aliasing, it just looks sharper overall. I'm pretty tired of this smooth look on new games now.
