This level of detail might bankrupt some companies these days though…Though maybe more linear games like these would help save money instead of trying the same thing with all the open world games they make.
@@Maximus20778 I do believe that profit can still be made without the need for scummy micro transactions. As mentioned I think that instead of always doing those massive open worlds we could aim for more linear games like this (as in decent little zones instead of just hallways from beginning to end) so that the work that usually goes into just making the map bigger could go into making smaller zones better and more detail rich. And instead of always going for the most cutting edge photorealistic graphics maybe something more stylized would help with costs and also keep the game from getting too dated looking for longer.
The problem is open world games. ALL developers NEED to just focus on story and who care if the world is 100% open. I prefer a full story experience myself. But open world does have replayability
3:10 - You can also shoot the flour bags, and it will send flour into the air - this can actually be used later where there's infrared lasers to reveal them without having to use the cigar or thermal g.
I'm probably over-reading it, but given that the Colonel is an AI, I always took his "Well, there are certain things a person can and can't do..." as a robotic, like, 'scanning the morality database' type response
@@mywhychromosome but then he told raiden he can sympathize and hints at wanting to see the picture himself. For fun's sake he could be giving that generic response just to ward off Rose.
@Manek Iridius I know rose and Campbell are AI, but look at it this way: at that point in the story, we don't know that yet, and the game doesn't even think to give any hint about it. If there's no hint in serious normal codec calls, the hint sure as heck won't be found in a joke codec call about Raiden taking photos of panties. I don't think the way Campbell speaks in the panty codec call was supposed to hint at him being an AI, but rather that he's speaking awkwardly for comedic effect.
@@kingdomcome3914 She was always an AI. The mind games the game was trying to do at the very end was make you wonder if Rose was even real to begin with. This includes just before the credits.
The actual design document for MGS2 exists online, and I had this exact thought when reading it. One minute you are reading some super well thought out social commentary or brilliant subtle philosophy behind some aspect of the game design, the next you are reading about "Chinaman" the lost member of Dead Cell...he wasn't from China...
man i wished more modern games have these kind of magical things. It shows how much care and passion the developers put into their work. There are only few of them these nowaday such as zelda botw or rdr2
As we get close to the 20th anniversary of this game, I’m still amazed how beautiful the game looks and not only that..the story and it’s relevance even today... amazing
Honestly I think it's a great medium, games now could look more like this cause it cuts the amount of time on visual detail they'll be told to out do the next year, more space for discs so they won't have to make a long loading time (especially for Christmas), more budget could be put towards story, and with modern tech we could easily do better than this but if they don't try to out do themselves... I'm repeating myself but you get the point
this was one of my first PS2 games, so messing around with the environment and finding out all sorts of cool things was just as fun as the main game itself. Most of my replays were trying to find out all sorts of things to shoot and what happened if I did this or that.
Same. My favorite thing to mess around with are the guards in MGS2. Literally could get spotted, follow them, let them say, “Enemy sighted! Requesting backup uni-” punch them last second, and have them rinse and repeat it(they will kick you for annoying them, though). This thing is actually also something a lot of players did back then, and that's why Raikov in MGS3 was known for getting away with “Punching guards”. Played this back in 2008, never regretted it since.
I’ve played this game all the way through probably 40 times and saved at certain spots in the tanker and plant, found soooo many secrets gotten the stealth chips and wigs, but this video is amazing I haven’t seen a lot of these funny secrets!!! 😃😂
SAME. I remember when I was 6 or 7 playing this and I was walking around a ton of spots in the room and looking at the statue from different angles trying to get a follow up call lol.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned it already, but @25:44 the A.I. Campbell tells you that the elevator won't move with an enemy on it, which seems like a nod to the fact that, since the current mission is a simulation of what happened in Shadow Moses, the A.I. knows/recognizes that the elevator that Snake used also didn't have an enemy on it, thus forbiding you of carrying an enemy on it.

he also says he is on your side during the sniper part. shoot at him and call him and eventually he will say "RAIDEN I AM ON YOUR SIDE!" then like 2 cut scenes later he says he never said that.
The level of interactivity wit the environment was pretty groundbreaking at the time. Mgs2 was the first game I remember playing where you could shoot the magazines off the shelf, fruits and veggies, and bottles etc.
This game is absolutely loaded with content. The HD Collection makes it even better. I wish there was a way to explore some of the other Shell 2 struts you never see.
You could buy a 3d printer and a license to this guy's model of the whole of big shell it's glorious and one day I'm going to make one he even has the insides fully modeled
I always thought the snake tales was wasted potential, Snake's plays a big part behind the scenes in the plant campaign and I thought they did something similar to what separate ways is to re4 campaign. I was so disappointed it was just some missions with large text explaining the context with no codec or cutscenes.
If you adjust the lighting a bit of that part of Raiden on the strut where he falls through the hatch, you could straight up make it look like MGSV. Lighting in that opinion is already that close.
16:35 Can I just say I love this version of discovering Ray. Snake underneath their very feet symbolic of his place as the ultimate stealth operative meant to combat an equally ultimate manmade WMD that towers over him with an army in line. I think it really sums up their relationship in a Kojima way.
The DanD guy I played this game specifically all the time on the Vita. It’s super fun futzing around in vr missions and the story’s pretty great too. I always wanted to know how a multiplayer version of the game would be. The odd early 2000’s gun control and the usefulness of traps and effective cover would be soo fun.
So, back in the day, I played this game obsessively. I looked for every possible easter egg (either online or discovering myself). Yet, I never knew you could "smell" Johnny with the bomb sensor (I did know he's there and you can listen to him). Crazy how you learn things about games decades later.
Actually, that was Iriqois Pliskin who said that. He's on the Marine's and Raiden's side, but unfortunately disappeared after he joined forces with Otacon to repel Solidus Snake.
I remember in my very first playthrough of MGS2 on the Tanker level, I would shoot literally everything in the lounge room. The level of detail for a game that came out twenty years ago is quite insane.
TofuDaTurtle Played it religiously and it was my first Metal Gear since I bought the substance re-release on Xbox. Bought a ps1 for mgs1 couple years later but my bias and childhood condition me to put this above 1 at times. It’s just never gets old
I LOVE that the AI responds to other AIs. Like, it's almost ubiquitous in games that the AI has this collective intelligence that psychically transmits information from AI to AI about the player's location and the location of all other AIs. The fact that an enemy can scare another enemy like that is so fucking awesome and rare in games that it's just marvelous to see it happen here. I love this game. It was so incredibly groundbreaking for its time.
there's a interesting detail that i did one time, if you get knock out (like trying to rool on the stairs) while wearing the enemy's clothes, then a camera see you, the camera will ask for your status report, and if you don't get up, the backup team will come and check you, sure they will just kick you and make your disguise unequip, but it's still a pretty cool thing to try it out sometimes of course, this does not work if lose the balaclava of your outfit (which is funny because raiden never even thinks about just grabbing one from a knocked out/dead enemy)
@@thethethethe135 maybe or maybe it's just because the radio on the terrorists says that someone is wearing out uniform and that they should face check everyone they come across, so maybe raiden didnt pick up a new balaclava because...it would be useless since they would have to check his face anyway
One thing I found that I don't think anyone has mentioned, at the end of the game when Colonel is under the effect of the virus, if you die at that point instead of the usual dramatic "RAIDEEEEN" he calls out a very short and almost happy "Raiden~" like he's trying to get his attention from across the street or something so he can say hi
I think mgs2 is the example of if you got to many toys what fun is there in using some when you can use it all. So thank you kojima and crew for making use of the ps2.
This is why I love the Metal Gear Solid series. This level of attention to detail is missing from a lot of modern games. (Then again... I guess the Metal Gear Solid series is also missing... *sigh*)

Nuno30318 it depends.. if you have a great or at least a very solid trustful relation regarding the Sexual thing... then *your gf would probably even find it kind of "cute" to do thatwith "her" in mind* . The nostalgia from this brought up so many good memories as a kid. The gaming industry needs to go back to this style of detail and care for a title.
This level of detail might bankrupt some companies these days though…Though maybe more linear games like these would help save money instead of trying the same thing with all the open world games they make.
@@Shiratto true without microtransactions and dlcs the corporations will kill the devs and shut studios down cuz no profit.
@@Shiratto yeah as a kid I never realized how expensive it is to make games.

Taking pictures of a hostage's privates:

@Manek Iridius Rose is real until the pregnancy reveal, then she's subtly replaced by an AI.
@@kingdomcome3914 She was always an AI. The mind games the game was trying to do at the very end was make you wonder if Rose was even real to begin with. This includes just before the credits.
