  • An entity dubbed the Portuguese States of Africa, an unbroken chain of Portuguese territory, spanning southern Africa from its Atlantic coast all the way to the Indian Ocean, connecting Angola to Mozambique was envisaged in this Mapa Cor-de-rosa or famously, the Rose-Coloured or Pink Map. Unfortunately the Pink Map conflicted with the British “Cape to Cairo Red Line''. Aspirations of the Brits cut right through Portugal’s ‘future’ mega colony.

The Portuguese did not have the population to do a huge amount of colonisation. They were only about 1 million people in 1500 when their naval power really began. Given their small population, it's amazing what they were able to do in Brazil, which is today 214 million.

I am a Zimbabwean and I know my people fought and resisted Portuguese occupation in 17th century,my people won most of those battles and drove off the Portuguese. Our King ChangamireDombo achieved fame for his victories against Portuguese ,he slowed down their advance inland. If ChangamireDombo's Kingdown was weaker, the Portuguese would have conquered his land and even expanded the slave trade,so his heroics slowed down colonization of his territory.
It was the British who came much later on and were able to pacify and defeat the later disjointed Kingdom coz they had started having internal factions and that weakened them.
Also the British wanted to claim the Port City of Beira as their colony and Mozambique would have been cut into North and South Mozambique with Zimbabwe having a coastline, however than plan failed before it could be implemented.
Anyways thanks for the History lesson.

Changamire Dombo was called the “Demon Possessed Warrior” by the Portuguese because he was extremely spiritual person when he defeated them twice and forced them to pay taxes for passing by his land of the “ Munhumutapa Empire!!” Proud of my ancestors. My family hasn’t moved from the area, we’re still living there up-to now !! Proudly indigenous Karanga !!

I think it is better for ANGOLA AND MOZAMBIQUE to enter into negotiations with ZIMBABWE, ZIMBIA AND MALAWI to build a railway, or a highway, that connects THE ATLANTIC TO THE INDIAN, as the channels that pass through the MIDDLE EAST ARE COMMITTED. Another thing is that world powers will be able to negotiate with just two countries, rather than with five, TANZANIA AND THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO, OR WITH JUST ONE, SOUTH AFRICA. THEY ARE WASTING TIME AND MONEY!!!!!!!🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

There is such a separation between Portuguese culture and the culture of its colonies. The colonies are vibrant centers of art, music and life, especially Cape Verde and Angola
But when visiting Portugal the only sense you can get is of stagnation and a longing for a bygone era
The empire looks behind, and the liberated look ahead. That's the difference.

🤔 Knowing what we know about Portugal and its colonial territories, we should grateful that it didn't colonize more territories in Africa.
At the beginning of European exploration, England was a minor fry, but at the end, it became the dominate empires; WHY?
I say it's the culture of English people; that enabled them to challenge their leaders effectively to the betterment of their society.
I recommend that young Africans should study "Magna Carta" if they really want to able to express themselves and contribute to the world.

How come you didn't mention the role of the local African Kings like Lubosi Lewanika of the Lozi people (Barotseland/Western Zambia or North Western Rhodesia), who probably ruled the largest kingdom in that region. Lewanika literally begged the British Government to make his kingdom a protectorate to which they where initially hesitant. The Lozi people already had a long history of fighting Portuguese allied slave raiders from Angola. They even banned Portugese slave traders from setting foot in their kingdom. But the kingdom was weakened by civil war and the threat of Ndebele raids and Portuguese encroachment was becoming an issue again.
The Cape to Cairo vision was more of Cecil Rhodes and his BSA company who even forged documents in eagerness to get access to the Zambezi region even before the British government was involved. But the Lozi king found out and refused to honor it.
Eventually the British agreed to it, and the Lozi king signed off his entire kingdom and that of his neighbours a region more than 5x his kingdom to the British. To this day the Lozi Kings are close friends with the British monarchy and have been 'educated' in Britain and personally attended every British monach coronation in the last 120 years.

@@RESTITVTOR_TOTIVS_HISPANIAEThis is NOT a defence of the British or any other European empire, but the French, Belgian and Portuguese rulers were far crueler than the British. Portugal were the last to formally surrender its African colonies and held onto them for dear life way into the seventies after Britain had already let all its African colonies go, and the French are still the heaviest perpetrators of neocolonialism in Western Africa today (just look at what’s going on right now with Niger).
