  • Multiple clips of E-2C Hawkeyes during land based refueling, and launch/landing aboard U.S. Navy aircraft carriers. The Northrop Grumman E-2C Hawkeye is a twin-turboprop plane designed to be an airborne early warning and control platform. It has advanced radar and surveillance capabilities which allow it to detect enemy aircraft and missile activity, and communicate these threats to friendly aircraft and land forces.

    I was an enlisted aircrewman in the E2-C with VAW 124, Had 222 traps on USS America. You’d be amazed the capability it had in the mid-70s. Great plane, a blast to fly in, the good old days.

    This plane was made by Grumman. The SAME company who built the Lunar Excursion Module od LEM (the module that landed on the moon)
    I lived 1/2 mile from the end of the runway in Bethpage, NY where they were built. So these planes (along with the F-14, and F-6) used to fly SUPER low over the top of my house. I could wave to the pilots (and they would wave back) Grumman employees over 85,000 people in the plant during the 60s and was a GREAT company to work for. The plant was a 365/24/7 operation. The enployeed whole families too! It was such a shame that the plant closed down and left long island a pure bedroom community

    Has the panic button been pressed. But Boeing clearly has major problems with the 737MAX, which is the 4th generation of an aircraft design from the 1960s.
    At the time, the 737 was the little brother of the Boeing 727, which shared the cockpit and fuselage size with the 727, but was shorter and was really only to be used for short routes. The aircraft had a low landing gear, which at the time did not cause problems with the diameter of the Pratt & Whitney JT8D of only 40.0 in (1,020 mm).
    However, as time has passed, the size of jet engines has been replaced by ones almost twice as large in diameter. With the MAX generation, this has led to a totally awkward placement of the jet engines up in front of the wings in order to have enough distance to the ground. This led to the two plane crashes with Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines - because the plane cannot actually fly without the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System.
    Boeing chose not to continue production of the 717(MD-95) in 2006 and the 757 in 2004. But at that time, Boeing was still the supreme market leader. Boeing had taken over McDonnell-Douglas. Fokker went bankrupt and closed production of the Fokker 70 and 100 in 1998. The BAe 146 / Avro RJ70, RJ85 and RJ100 was not continued in a new generation RJX in 2001.
    Everything in the 150-230 passenger plane segment is dependent on the 737MAX - otherwise Boeing cannot compete at all with the Airbus 320neo family + Airbus added the 220 family from Bombardier. Thus, Airbus covers everything from 100 to 240 passengers. At the same time, 321LR and 321XLR are taking over the market from former 757 operators.
    There are almost twice as many orders for 320neo aircraft compared to 737MAX aircraft.
    Pilots are opting out of the 737 as there will be many more 320 operators in the future.
    Seen with several factors, a two-engine version of the 727 could have been a safe platform with the same cockpit, center fuselage, landing gear as with the 737, but without problems with the diameter of jet engines in addition to a somewhat more tail-heavy aircraft and therefore a different aircraft character. But a plane that can fly without MCAS. But the way out of the problems is really to develop a completely new replacement. But these are decisions that should have been made more than 10-15 years ago.

      Umm, the E-2A and E-2B. As far as I know the E-2 is it's own design. The C-2 Greyhound though was derived from the E-2.

      I had to look close, but it's a C. The Navy generally puts aircraft type on tail and in this case, above the Bureau #

    How do they land these on carriers??

    • @brucelaughton3108
      @brucelaughton3108 3 года назад

      Very carefully. The wing span is just over 80 feet and the engines both rotate the same direction which gives it a tendency to drift to the right on approach (toward the island). Of the 4 different models of aircraft I landed on the carrier the E-2 was the most demanding and the artificial pitch feel mechanism removed some of the "feel" from the pilot's fingertips. Watch a few of the E-2 approaches and you will see the pilot constantly moving the yoke bumping the controls to stay on speed, lineup and glideslope. Flying much slower than the jets, the E-2 is more easily impacted by the low pressure area behind the ship and if you don't anticipate this you can end up sinking low just behind the ship - not a good thing. Having said that it has power to spare and it is very responsive to throttle movement.

      @@brucelaughton3108 wow so they are harder to land than fighters?

    • @brucelaughton3108
      @brucelaughton3108 3 года назад

      @@officerxrp3261 Not harder than jets just different challenges. Jets come aboard at a faster speed with engines that have a slight lag from adding throttle to the airplane responding. Their smaller wings and faster approach speed means they are less susceptible to the "low pressure area sink" just behind the ship - but not immune. If they pick up a high rate of descent at the ramp they are in dangerous territory.
      The E-2 loves to drift right and if you carry that into the wires the drift will continue. With an 80 foot wingspan that can cause problems. If you come into the low pressure area a bit slow and a bit under-powered you are going to sink to a red ball and taxi to the one wire. This is NOT a confidence builder for your crew....... As a landing signal officer I found that if jets "nail" the start - that is on line-up, on glide slope and with an on-speed angle of attack they will generally have that landing under control all the way into the wires. With an E-2 your landing is "in the bag" only when you are on deck with a 3-wire. It is never too late to screw it up.
