I Worked for Wilko for many years, Good workers but poor management, And they would waste money even PAYING a outside Company to help them see what was going wrong and a number of the people at the top left under suspicious circumstances caught up to no good. Even years ago many staff wondered how Wilko kept going so this won't come as any surprise to the workforce.
I worked for them for 15 years 1990-2005. Did everything from cleaning the shop floor to being Duty Manager. Even then, there was no loyalty from shop level management. My manager would rather have employed 2 people on 15 hours rather than 1 person on 30 hours. This saved the company having to pay National Insurance at the time. I constantly worked over my contracted hours but never got paid overtime! Basically you were just a number and a wage cost! Even then money was being wasted. We still had to use price stickers when EPOS was introduced. Internally, due to a poor distribution system we had a "Misspick" system (someone at main warehouse had picked the wrong stock.) The company brought in a new plastic lorry security seal that could be opened using a matchstick!
Before the Wilko financial situation broke onto the news several months back I was saying that Wilko was in financial problems , walking into my local store was depressing shelves getting emptier , less and less products being offered , items like large plastic storage boxes spread across shelving units to make it look full . The general tiredness of the checkout area . It is sad because it is another high street anchor on the down turn . There is a Saver in my town which is always well stocked and competitive on prices . There also used to be Poundland in my town but I think the lease came to an end , I am sure savers picked up some of the slack from the closure of that shop .
Wilko's problems and issues start from a couple of years back. I would blame their store managers and hierarchy for their downfall. Their shop staff are friendly and superb. Their online offers and service are a joke. Yes, I would agree with you - noticed fewer products on the shelves and in recent times they have been trigger happy to jack up prices on basics.
B&M and Home Bargains took their market (and are usually in busier locations). Also, a lot of Wilko own brand stuff is poor quality when supermarkets have better quality in own brand. They had good deals for toiletries and so on though. Stock issues for the last year!
@@jait2024 I don't as a rule, most of my purchases are in person or traditional mail order. I only once had to order online and that was Currys Direct for a set top box, because my local branch no longer existed. I just brought a set of acrylic paints, a box of aspirins and a dispenser of sellotape yesterday afternoon, from my local Wilko's, which ironically is in the town's old C&A branch, which I brought many things from including clothes I still wear and an alarm clock that worked from 1981 until 2022. ♥️
Forcing self check out on older customers hasn't helped my local stores staff didn't want to serve customers they just pointed at the self checkout and when you said you didn't want to pay that way they pulled a face .
In Rotherham they had two Wilko stores that were virtually a stones throw away from each other, one in the town centre and the other close by at Retail World. They closed the town centre one last year but to be honest it should have been closed years ago.
The Wilko store in Uxbridge has been going down before and and since lockdown, even though it was still open. I use to shop a lot in my local store, but it has gone downhill, I don't know if it is the management or just non availability of items due to the company not able to pay for stock. It use to be a very good store, but I can see it closing and killing off the small shopping centre it is in as it is a major retailer.
I really hope they don’t go...my local Wilko is just around the corner from my flat, I’ve been going there all 14 (almost 15) years of my life, I would hate to see it go, we go every week :(
Though they are still taking orders online via credit card to pick up in store, yet not sending a confirmation email its been bought, and selling it to someone else in the store anyway!!!! As I found out yesterday. Not great behaviour.
Wilko needs to rebrand & attract new younger shoppers. Take the business online or move it to Germany. C & A is a major store in Germany in Hamburg & suderburg etc. I am not surprised its going bust. If its relying on pensioners.
Lots of big losses 😅 As someone who is bared from wilco for makng a complaint and having the police sent to my house, I don't give a flying funk. All I did was film the manager Albion Street Leeds being nasty to me around 3 years ago.
Comes as no surprise. Not nearly as good value, across the board, as it believes itself to be. Shopping about, actually one of the more expensive. Of course, that would require ' a bit of legwork and an ounce of greymatter' Forgot for a second I was talking to the average brit 🤣🤣

Let go
This is a shame really. I always shop at Wilko
We stopped shopping at wiko when they brought in the self serve checkout. I hope we helped close them down
I knew it was as ours has many empty shelves they not restocking.
I'll miss them if they go, but our local one is never busy

Savers can't save anything. Savers don't attract anyone there.

First Woolies, then 99p and now Wilkos....where will it end? 😞
Stop spending online

Slowly Brexit is beginning to show - biggest mistake EVER !!!
😂
It’s amazing they’ve lasted as long as they have, as essentially they’re identical to Woolworths that went skint a few years back.
Not as fun as Woolies though and the quality seemed a bit poor sometimes.
Bring back Woolworths
And the real Argos, complete with catalogue!

They have the best collection of seeds fir vegetables, fruit and flowers, they sell compost & all equipment to make you self sufficient.
Wilko will be a loss to the high street if it collapses ☹️
They have suspended xmas saving cards could not use have we lost our money
Reminds me of Woolworths all over again

Let it go. Simple
Wilko been losing money since 2021 relate to poor management at and poor sales especially my local store the one in the Arndale Centre

It was never the same after they changed their name
My local one always is. During the pandemic people had to queue outside. There's usually between two and four other people in the queue with me.
With Poundland etc.WILKO is now obsolete.
Who ever thought WOOLWORTHS would close . ?
Poundland don't see wallpaper, paint, light bulb, car supplies, plumbing fixtures and many other larger or specialist household goods.
😨 Not WILKO!
Classic case of been beaten by your competitors. Got to stay a head of the times
In this case Wilko got better of their competitors by beating themselves up before anyone else could.

There is a savers right next to Wilkos and they are much cheaper. They can't compete anymore.
