  • We have an amazing challenge match from Chongqing. In this epic match, an obviously trained boxer/kickboxer challenges an MMA coach to a boxing match. Let's see what happens and how MMA coach almost took it too lightly. Commentating with Jerry are David and his wife Xingli. Xingli is also from the region where this match takes place, so we have some extra fun commentary exploring not only the martial arts but also the culture of Southwest China. Enjoy ;)
To find the clip we commentated can be found on DY if you search 天袭格斗健身俱乐部. Let us know if you have any requests for more analysis from their stuff.

My TKD coach loved boxing and would train at Evander Holyfield’s gym. Every Saturday at our school was just for boxing so we could be more well rounded. Friday nights he would have a BJJ coach come in to our dojang and teach us some very basic fundamentals mostly for defense to get back up on your feet in striking distance. This was in the early 00s, on that wave when MMA was just starting to get mainstream popularity.

That was one of the most solid sparring matches I've seen on the channel. Great technique on both sides. Props to both fighters!

I like how in China, and Japan MMA/ Boxers call each other out for a challenge. Remind me how they used to do back in the days.

I'm ITF. We did some hands only sparring and many drills from boxing, but it's kinda useless because you can't use hooks or uppercuts in regular ITF sparring or competition, only straight punches are allowed.
They should hang a sign outside of every TKD Dojang saying: "Kickboxing is like this but way better"

When I did ITF TKD you could throw ridge/knife hands and backfists and hammers as well. Still limiting but a tad better than just punching. Has that changed? It has been decades since my TKD days.

Challenger was a bit flat-footed and admiring his punches a little too much (hey, don't we all do that?) Good aggression, but should have known the coach had more tricks up his sleeves.

As a guy who's Base is Boxing but Heavily Practices anything else I can get my hands on from Basic Stuff like Muay Thai, American Kickboxing and Wrestling, TKD, Karate, Jeet Kune Do, Etc. To even the stuff people say doesn't work like Certain Kung Fu Styles, Taichi, Sumo the list goes on I find it Helps make you so much Better Overall. Not just in Versatility but some Aspects can Translate over to Arts you wouldn't think it would work in.
Such as the Muay Thai Plum Clench in Grappling Sports or Tai Chi Balance and Rooting Aspects in a Sport like Boxing. It's even made my Boxing Way better as now I learned how to Parry, Hand Trap, Slap Their Guard Down, Twist the Head and Body to Divert Punches, the List is Endless. Especially Limb Destruction's from Arts like Silat I've even learned how to Wear Out someones Bicep and Forearm as Time Goes on from Repeated Strikes to the Exact Same Spot when they Shell Up.
Martial Arts come together to Create Something More Beautiful then they could ever be Separate. So many people hate on Certain Arts but I find even the most "useless" Art can be transformed into something great and you can take just a handful of Aspects from them and make them work super well in other circumstances. I think No Art except for the No Touch Bullshit and Similar stuff can work. Even the Bro Science of Conditioning when done right can make your Body Parts as hard as a Rock. Though it's all about how it's done and a lot of people do that kind of stuff wrong. Just Punching a Tree with 16 oz Gloves on has made my Hands Damn Near Unbreakable through Knuckle Calcification. Unless I'm Fully Punching something as Hard or Harder then Solid Steel and Iron. And since I don't go All Out I've even managed to achieve that without Callused Nasty Skin, Loss of Finger Mobility, or Loss of Nerves except for the Most Unnecessary Ones.

Definitely. The coach was probing for openings, and when he was sure he dialed it up... oh, those boxing experienced opponents are so good with that. Rusty, but it was coming back as the round wore on.

I agree that i would rather see full contact, but boxing only is still fun for me to watch. My favorite is seeing the more open styles with knees, elbows, etc.

So when I was a kid and training Moo Duk Kwan, we absolutely had hands only sparring sessions in the mix of our other training. Very valuable to do! This was back in about 1982. My teacher was very progressive with having us do real sparring actually hitting each other, etc. Plus even as a 12 year old for training sometimes I would get put up against adult black belts. I would get my ass whooped but that was great learning.

The challenger started off using good defense for his head. He was keeping his guard tight and very few punches were slipping through. But toward the end, he stopped covering properly. After the knock down, he stopped covering completely and just left his head wide open. I think if he had kept his good guard form the fight would have gone a lot better for him.

What was this trying to prove honestly? He looked to hang quite well with the coach, and the fight might have been gone either way if it weren't for the size difference.
Whatever the case I hope it was worth it for the challenger, he was straight up rattled twice. This is no joke.

The coach has the footwork and tempo and head movements of boxing.
Meanwhile the challenger has zero head movement. From his mt shorts and heavy punches, he probably boxed muaythai, where head movements aint really encouraged.

Challenger is straight up smaller than the coach, but gave a good fight.
You don't want to stand and trade like that against someone bigger, especially when they're about as skilled as you.
