Thanks Much Lou! It was a very long wait for the right car but so worth it! The proper '66 Cyclone GT unrestored was really hard to find. Years ago I had a Red with white interior white pinstripe Cyclone exactly like the brochure & ads but it was only a Base Cyclone with a 289 and was less engine. I built a 700hp BBF for it but then moved and had to sell it after owning it for 16 yrs. One of my first cars oh so many years ago was a 1967 Mercury Capri 425hp 427 4spd car one of only 6 built. Since then I have owned 2 other 427 Comets and 3 427 Fairlanes but this '66 GT was the dream for so long. Today I will drive the Cyclone 65 miles each way across town so the wife can get her dream car! Hint: It's a Lincoln. I drive the Cyclone very often and as a matter of fact took it to lunch just yesterday. I prefer to drive it over my '23 F150 STX. Pure bliss driving it although with temps warming up and well up into the 80's I need to get the AC working again. Montgomery Wards AC was added in August of 1972 at 40k miles so very few miles on it. It was disconnected by prior owner when the new water pump was installed. Again, Thanks much Lou and was great to meet you!
Nice car ! This Cyclone is a great example, a survivor no less, and is beautiful in burgundy with white interior. Showstopper, needs nothing, perfect as is. Thanks Lou - great feature !
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL STUNNING GORGEOUS CLASSIC SURVIVOR MERCURY COMET CYCLONE-, WOW LOVE IT. I CAN SEE HOW PROUD THE OWNER FEELS ABOUT HIS DREAM CAR, THANK YOU LOU, I SEE YOU ENJOYED THE ACCELERATION PORTION OF THE DRIVE-LOL, BEAUTIFUL VIDEO REVIEW LOU.
I agree, this definitely a great car! The interior looks fantastic, the front end looks menacing, and what a great car story and reminder for all of us to be patient, but to stick to our life's goals until we achieve them. Thanks, Lou!
Hello Lou! That's a nice car that owner has! And it's rare - you see more Fairlane GT's of that year than Mercury Cyclones. A Cyclone convertible was the pace car at the '66 Indianapolis 500. One thing I thought about those wheel covers. I actually thought those were rims, but they're WHEEL COVERS! They first appeared on (I think) the '64 models, when the Comet was still a Ford Falcon with an extended wheelbase. Amazing how much it transformed in two short years, and by 1970-71, the Cyclone would become a serious performance car, competitive with the Chevelle SS and the Plymouth Road Runner! Thanks again, Lou, for another wonderful video. I made my comment a tad shorter this time around. Hope you enjoyed it, though! And as always, I will be watching!
Hi ultraviolet tp, Happy to read "Beautiful car" :-) My pleasure sharing a variety of cars with you. I appreciate your encouraging words on the great work, Lou
58 years.. you have patience! Looks like it paid off. Beauty! Love the hood, nose color, and the way it "Jumps off " Great ride. Thanks for sharing, Lou.
Fantastic Car. My dad had a 66 Comet, not a Cyclone, though. His was from the other end of the model line. I took driver's training when he owned that car and spent a lot of time driving it while I had my learner's permit. The Comet was a great handling and fun to drive car. It I were a collector, a couple of them would be in my collection. A Caliente Convertible and a Cyclone GT. I'm glad you posted this video. I enjoyed it.
Most people do not realize the Comet hardtops are 7" longer than the sibling Fairlane. Bit of a sleeker look. Feels unreal to find one in this condition that needs nothing.
Hi Lou, what an other great Ford Mercury, that is a great looking car, they just don`t make cars today looking as good as the 1960s and 70s, an other great video .
Unusual shift quadrants for a '66. Officially didn't come out until '67. In 1967, there was a 427 V8 option. There was even a drop-in 427 crate engine which the dealer would swap. No A/C compressor? Then pull the under dash unit.
@automatedelectronics6062 I have owned 3 of those Rare 1967 R Code Comets 425hp/427. A capri, a cyclone and a caliente. The 3rd owner removed the A/C compressor when he replaced the water pump and never put it back on. Very soon will get the AC working again. I do have a mint in dash factory AC setup also along with full 4 piston disc brakes from a 427 Comet. Also have a NOS 427 only Power Brake booster. Debating if I should change the brakes. The power drums work fine for general driving but in heavy traffic the disc would be nice. So busy with projects. Bit shy of 10 months now and just have not found the time to work on it. Do not want down time.
@@randysrestoration Disc brakes are considered a safety improvement, so do not downgrade judging of a classic restored car, especially if they were optional. I've seen plenty of award-winning Mustangs with added stock disc brakes, even on the early cars. Disc brakes are fade-resistant and better stopping. But they do require extra application effort. The best thing I did to my mother's '68 VW Bug was to add front disc brakes. The calipers turned out to be the ones used on the Type III so they were a bit larger than on a Ghia. Downtime should be as short as possibly. I used to do my big projects on Thanksgiving weekend, when I was still working full-time as an auto-tech.
@@automatedelectronics6062 I have not downgraded anyone's car because they added disc brakes. And this car disc brakes were NOT an option. You must have not read what I wrote. For what I want to do to car it would take a good month to do. Currently have 10 multi thousand hour restorations to attend to any 90% or more of the time work alone.
Hi Larry, "Was a tall order he made glad he found a rare car in original condition" I agree. Fun when Caretakers let me drive the car :-) Glad to share the ride with you, Lou
I see this Cyclone was built at "Lorain Assembly" in Lorain,Ohio...My father worked at Lorain Assembly. In 1966 he was a repairman and could have possibly repaired something on this Cyclone if anything needed "fixed" after it went down the line...Lorain Assembly was the Ford plant to work at if you loved mid sized Ford and Merc supercars....Lorain built all kinds of rare muscle cars. Some that were never supposed to have been built and some that the so-called "Ford Experts" say never were built.Lorain Assembly was only a 3 hour drive from Detroit and if a Ford bigwig wanted a car built with whatever options on it or whatever drivetrain in it,it was infact built. It's good to see this Cyclone is still around and being cherished.👍

Dang,,, when I noticed on the window sticker it had interval windshield wipers,,,, a rare option for that time,,, I really wanted to hear something about it and see the control for it...
Hi 2packs4sure, In 1966 a "new" concept of interval windshield wipers, and now mandatory on all cars. Thanks for viewing and sharing what you notice, Lou
Awesome ! Thanks Randy, this Cyclone is very much like my wife’s first car, she bought in the early 1970’s , she never let me drive it , but man that was a very great car! Thanks Lou!
I still remember vividly going with my parents when they bought their first new car in 1966. I was 9 years old. My dad was a Ford/Mercury buyer. There was a dealership in the next town. One of the cars they test drove was a white Comet Capri 2 door hardtop. My dad wanted that car in the worst way, but my mother couldn’t get past the sticker price. I remember that it was $3,006.05. Now an option package costs more than that.
One of my first cars was a 1967 Mercury Capri with a factory 427 dual quad 4 spd. 1 of only 6 built. I have owned 3 different 427 comets but for some reason a super nice 1966 GT eluded me all these years.
This was another nice video and I really like the car/what confused me, was the intermittent windshield wipers/I saw the main knob and it said to turn it to the right for low and high and then turn it to the left for the intermittent, but then it said something about another button and it was labeled “b” to adjust something else and I never could figure out why you would’ve needed that second knob when the first knob did everything?
When I was 21 (1996)I bought a 66 Cyclone for $1000. It had 390 in it that I chose to rebuild for my College Auto tech class. Turns out it had 14 bolt heads. A fiberglass hood, a 3:55 posi, a c-6, a tach , bucket seats and a budget I couldnt afford. The car only had 67000 miles on it, and I did my best to recapture its essence. The new engine was incredible as I ported an polished the heads and lapped the valves myself, completely rebuilding the bottom end and upgrading the exhaust to 2.75". I ended up selling it to a guy in Victoria BC. I believe he restored it. It was the same color as this one, but had black interior. Same everything else except the AC unit. Cool video thanks for sharing

WOW, what a beauty. This Cyclone in Burgandy looks great! A plain jane Comet of this vintage is quite ordinary. A Cyclone GT will definitely get attention! Don't believ me...just turn the key and listen! Great vid, Lou. I'm curious, if anyone can answer this: This is a Mercury Comet Cyclone GT. Was there a non GT verion of the Cyclone? Thanks.
@@loucostabile Actually, I looked it up. There were Cyclones that were not GT's. Loved reading the history of the Cyclone. Google and Wiki had a fantastic hisgtory. Thanks for sharing this car with us and getting me doing research!
Yes the base cyclone was avail it came with a 289. The GT hood was avail on the Cyclone as a option standard on the GT. There was also a 390 avail on base cyclone but the 335hp avail only on the GT as standard equipment. I do really like the Burgundy paint! It changes colors so much depending on lighting. It can go from dark almost black and in bright light it looks more like a shade of red.
@@randysrestoration Thanks for the additional info. Randy, I appreciate that. So many of us here are mere fans of autos and we don't know a lot of the facts, that's why I always appreciate it when one of you guys reply to my messages or comments. Enjoy your day!
Not sure if it was a 66 or 67 but in the late 60s early 70s my Father had a 390 4 speed Cyclone GT convertible, robin egg blue with white interior, its long gone he wore it out driving to school/work in the Pennsylvania winters......I always wondered how many were made like that one.

Absolutely stunning Cyclone. Fortune has smiled on randy. I remember the night my dad picked up his 66 caliente from Marshall brothers Lincoln Mercury. She was gorgeous, cardinal red with a white painted top and red interior. I hope to find one like it one day. Thanks Lou

When I was in junior high school, one of my friends bought a brand new 66 Fairlane GT the car was a factory four speed had it been an automatic? It would’ve had a GTA on the side. The Comet had a fiberglass hood to save a little on weight something you could not get on the Fairlane 390 car I liked his better naturally cause it was a stick shift which is right up a 16-year-old boys alley beautiful car the gentleman very fortunate
This Cyclone has the optional Sport Shift Automatic that was only avail mid year. A 4 spd like I had in my 427 Comets would be nice but no plans to change a thing.
1966 was the first year for the interval wipers in the industry. It was invented by an engineer, Robert Kearns at Ford first before it was offered in by GM or Chrysler.
congrats to the new owner, nice video Lou one of your best. If the owner ever wishes to , a msd igntion works wonders on FE Fords, run even smoother. provides a long duration spark for good combustion. installed two on 427 FE Fords and instant improvement.
People ask me if I would ever own a electric car or a hybrid. "already have a hybrid" It burns both gas and rubber! As I pull up to the pump for some 100 octane.
Never could figure out why Ford let the Fairlane and Cyclone get trampled by the GTO. They had a good 390 motor; the cars were good cars; but back then we looked at both cars as losers because of the GTO stock and option motors. 360 hp, folks!

Thanks for bringing this one to the channel 😊
Robert - Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) My pleasure sharing this classic with you. You're welcome, Lou
Hi Dave, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your trip to the car dealer with your Parents :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
One of my first cars was a 1967 Mercury Capri with a factory 427 dual quad 4 spd. 1 of only 6 built. I have owned 3 different 427 comets but for some reason a super nice 1966 GT eluded me all these years.
Nice, rare BURGUNDY Cyclone. 😅
:-)
Nice car!
Happy to read "Nice car!" :-)
Really nice car and model, hubcaps are sweet
Hi RD Enduro, Happy to read "Really nice car" :-) Lou
This was another nice video and I really like the car/what confused me, was the intermittent windshield wipers/I saw the main knob and it said to turn it to the right for low and high and then turn it to the left for the intermittent, but then it said something about another button and it was labeled “b” to adjust something else and I never could figure out why you would’ve needed that second knob when the first knob did everything?
Hi Joseph-Frank, Glad you like this "nice video" of this car :-) Hmmm, not sure about the "b" label. Hoping a Viewer with knowledge can share, Lou
I will be showing that on my channel soon!

Happy to share this Survivor with you Budget Audiophile Life-long :-)
WOW, what a beauty. Thanks.
Hi Brian, Happy to read "WOW, what a beauty" :-) Hmmm, not sure about GT and non GT version. Hoping a Viewer can share knowledge. You're welcome, Lou
👍💕 looks like a "vosne romanée" grand cru 🤣 tastes....💥
Hi Konrad, Thanks for viewing and sharing what you see, Lou
Not sure if it was a 66 or 67 but in the late 60s early 70s my Father had a 390 4 speed Cyclone GT convertible, robin egg blue with white interior, its long gone he wore it out driving to school/work in the Pennsylvania winters......I always wondered how many were made like that one.

Nice Ford is in my Hart 👍
:-)
57,000 The original mileage. Cool 😎
Happy to read "Cool" :-) Glad you enjoy this one Terry.
Best part is the mileage is very well documented.
Absolutely stunning Cyclone. Fortune has smiled on randy. I remember the night my dad picked up his 66 caliente from Marshall brothers Lincoln Mercury. She was gorgeous, cardinal red with a white painted top and red interior. I hope to find one like it one day. Thanks Lou

@@loucostabile I remember that one. Was worth another look
Hi James, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Friend in High Schools car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Hi Milford Civic, Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Lou
Great example, you don't see to many of these cars around.
You're right. A rare treat to see this one today :-)
That A/C unit clearly illustrates why they were called "knee knockers" 🙄🤣
I can see why they would be called that.
Stroke it ! 👍
Thank you for viewing and sharing.
congrats to the new owner, nice video Lou one of your best. If the owner ever wishes to , a msd igntion works wonders on FE Fords, run even smoother. provides a long duration spark for good combustion. installed two on 427 FE Fords and instant improvement.
Hi Captain Tom's Sea Stories, Happy to read you enjoy this episode :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
1968' issue comic book.
...makes sense for a 1968 comic book to have an older car in it.
....now if they had a 1969 Pontiac Trans Am there is something strange :-)
Yes it was a reprint in 1968. I have originals from 1966.
@@randysrestoration I used to buy to comic books when I was a kid.
I love it
Hi Shawn, Happy to read "I love it' :-) Lou
Fill that thing with fossil fuel that causes global warming that causes Mercury Cyclones!!!🔥🔥🔥❤ Beautiful car!
Good to know!
😂👍
People ask me if I would ever own a electric car or a hybrid. "already have a hybrid" It burns both gas and rubber! As I pull up to the pump for some 100 octane.
I’m rebuilding my fathers 1966 390 cyclone with all original #
Hi fun2bhad69, Hope your rebuild comes out the way you want, Lou
Never could figure out why Ford let the Fairlane and Cyclone get trampled by the GTO. They had a good 390 motor; the cars were good cars; but back then we looked at both cars as losers because of the GTO stock and option motors. 360 hp, folks!
Hi caribman10, Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
👍👍👍👍👍❤😂😅.
:-)
Be QUIET! I can't hear the dang engine. Ugh!!!
....you should be able hear this car :-)
It really is quiet! Nice for cruising for a old fart . . My new '23 F150 has more engine noise than this Cyclone
