Nice work for someone who doesn't know what scribing is. When you scribe something like this, you want to make sure it is level before you scribe it. If you aren't going to use trim on the sides, use a good quality, paintable caulk to fill the gaps.
You should also check your local building codes to see if you are required to use a box extender on your light switches and outlets.
Excellent, excellent job and explanation. Two thumbs up. Liked and subscribed!
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
LOVE this! How do you keep spilled water from seeping underneath shiplap? Caulking?
I didn’t seal the bottom. We are just careful not to let liquid go over near it.
You demonstrate and explain well enough, that I almost think I could do that! But the 67-year-old woman might cut off a finger lol It looks amazing 💜 I am wondering though how the ship lap would hold up to some spattering grease?
Thank you! Durability is fine if you use quality paint. You can also sand and repaint if you ever need to.
Did you cut off the top tab before adding the trim piece? This looks great, I'm considering this instead of subway tile in our kitchen!
I did because I trimmed it to fit right under the cabinet crown trim. You don’t really have to though. Thanks! I didn’t want to fool with tile and this was much easier.
My question is will he need to caulk that bottom shiplap just incase something waste on the counter and run under that bottom piece he had to scribe..
I chose not to caulk it.
Great video. Few questions:
1. After few years now, did shiplap get damaged with water, especially the first piece on the countertop?
2. Did you fill the gap with caulk?
3. What kind of shiplap did you use, is it mdf or is it some platic/vinyl material?
Great questions! I have zero regrets with this install. I haven’t had any issues with water damage at all. This is real wood, pre-primed shiplap.
I did not caulk where the board meets the counter. That is definitely an option if you anticipate a lot of water spills but we haven’t had any issues.
The only thing I felt was missed was the outlets how did you raise them to flush with the shiplap?
When you screw them back in, the tabs for the outlet should rest on the shiplap, not the Sheetrock. This brings them out flush with the shiplap.
Hi...I have been wanting a shiplap backsplash for my new home..I just want to ask...is it difficult to maintain? Can you wipe off cooking stains from it?
Yes! Using quality paint is the key. We just wipe it off with a damp rag.
What kind of trim you used for the sides and that one piece at the top?
You could buy any trim you like the style of. I actually made my own from a 2x4.
@@TightWadDIY ok thx you
Has your shiplap gotten hear damages from cooking yet?
Can one use ship lap in the restroom?
Yes. Just don’t use it in the shower!
Which sheen did you use for paint? Looks great thnx!!!
Thanks! I used semigloss.
Did you paint over it?
I did. I used a foam roller to add one more final coat to cover the nail holes.
Does the wood hold up well enough against a stove and sink? Or do you recommend ceramic? Thank you in advance
So far so good! It wipes off really easily if anything splashes on it.
How well does the shiplap hold up infront of the stove and is it safe?
I haven’t had any issues. Consider it was only drywall previously.
@@TightWadDIY Thats great to hear. Did you use any kind of Fireproof paint or anything? Sorry to be a bother you with more questions. Im about to start this project.
@@sktchmnky No. I used the Emerald trim paint from Sherwin Williams.
Thank you for your time and info.
@@sktchmnky My pleasure. Please consider subscribing and turning on notifications using the bell.
What type of shiplap did you use? Can you add a link please?
I bought it from Home Depot.
What is the width of the shiplap? 3”, 5” ???
Looks great. Two questions:… With what saw did you use to scribe your bottom board? Also, I am an anal retentive electrician. Please go back and turn all your switch and receptacle screws vertical. 😬 God bless!
I used a scroll saw. Noted: I will straiten them.
@@TightWadDIY thanks friend!
Great job! Have you heard of plastic “water proof” shiplap? I’d like to install in my shower!
I haven’t. I bet it would be really hard to clean in the grooves though.
