    Presently getting this done by an excellent local man after the timing chain broke on my wife's car. Bent valves and damaged cylinders. Know it's going to cost me a fortune but hadn't appreciated how complicated and difficult it is to fix. I have a new respect for mechanics who can do this. I know very little about engines and wouldn't know a valve keeper from a hydraulic lifter but found this an absolutely fascinating and riveting video.

    These Ford diesels were notorious for premature belt failure. Very often the valves wouldn’t bend but get punched up through the head and snap the cam.

    Now you know why most timing belt breaks, means the scrap yard for most cars! I got about 80,000 miles and 10 years out of a fiat uno about 20 years ago, before the timing belt went. I was gutted the body work and running of the car was excellent. Had a neighbour mechanic look at it and was told the engine was seized up and kaput! So that's a big lesson! I have a little Suzuki Alto from new its 8 years old, I believe believe it has a timing chain opposed to a belt so fingers crossed I should get a few more years with it. The Alto is a great little runner and heard many make 200,000 miles. Anyway it was a pleasure to see an Artisan mechanic at work and bring that broken engine back to life.

    • @MrHBSoftware
      @MrHBSoftware 3 года назад +1

      the pistons very very rarely get damaged other than some hit marks...maybe a bent conrod would be of more concern, but on a diesel the conrods are very sturdy...he could measure piston protrusion though...the valve guides get damaged very often, the valve shrinks in height and enlarges in thicknesss, gets stuck on the guide and the guide breaks when we try to remove the bent valve... this guy is a good tech does all the work with minimall fuss and cheap tool, great videos

    Hi. I am a musician :)) but on my Mazda6 (model 2004 RF5C engine) I have made the same service. Was a lot more complecated... because of a lot more parts, but I am so happy, that you made the procedure same way as me - the hobby man. My question is: why my belt were scratched? bearings were OK, water pump too, belt was Mitsuboshi - so good quality - only the stupid hidraulic tensioner was not so tight as the new, but no oil around at all. The service period is 120 000 km and the breakdown has happened at half a way, at 60 000. at accelerating on highway.
    What do you think about? Thanks.

    I don't understand why tightening the fuel injectors caused it to start

    • @christicristian06
      @christicristian06 5 лет назад +1

      There will be air in the system, you rotate the engine with the high pressure pipes untightened to get the air out, then you thighten it back to build pressure. The fuel pump works are very high pressures, over 800bars depending on engines. There are engine which work at over 1500bars. The engine started, but it was rough, that was because there was still air inside, then it got quieter and smooth, that's because all the air from the fuel system has been eliminated. An engine will never start with a lot of air in the fuel system, if you don't prime the low pressure fuel system it will never start. After that you need the bleed the air out from the high pressure fuel system by doing what my fellow mechanic did in the video. Gasoline engines are different.

      Agreed... Also never seen anyone use an engine crane to pull a head off... and the way he dropped it back on top of block... I don’t think cylinder 3 exhaust valve appreciated it too much...

      @@chriswithers568 he used the crane because that diesel engine is of the old type, the head and block are made of cast iron and not aluminum, so very heavy. it also left the injectors and turbine attached to the head. I mean, if it has the convenience of having a crane to lift it, why endure fatigue?

    One of the worst diesel engines ever made
