Elytra chase is always a tough mission when survival starts, I usually waited for the Spawn Villager, easier to trade and have a few spare.. GG to Cosmo on the first.. Scary when everyone is on your bridge trying to get by.. lol the "MINECRAFT!" shout at the end , excellent :)
For me it was almost the opposite. I barely had to ever bridge and after a while I found 4 tiny end cities with no ship of which only one was looted but no return gateway. In the end (literally) I had to walk back ~8k blocks. Without my map I would have been completely lost. I'll also need to make use of the spawn villagers

you did the right thing going off away from the crowd, You was just unlucky.
