She carries on the style of Miyuki Nakajima. Actually, she covers Nakajima's songs in her videos.

Not a band, but an individual. She has posted a lot of songs - some covers and some originals over the past two years - mainly in Japanese but some English (her English is good and an English version of Crow is due). She is 26 years old. I am speaking like some expert, but the algorithms only brought her to my attention about a week ago. Amazing deep voice. There is a live version online and this MV hit 2M: most of them just have a few thousand views and are very DIY

One of the strongest entries this year. The girl is really an excellent singer-songwriter. And those lyrics... phew.

not sure why you struggle to pronounce うぴ子's name when I know you can read it fine =P
i've heard upiko a lot over the last few years as someone who does a lot of busking and a lot of live streams.
she puts a ton of effort into busking and i think she might've done a busking tour even but surpassing various thresholds in the music industry is a big challenge and a painful struggle, as you already know. not sure why suddenly recently western audiences that are into japanese music have suddenly noticed upiko though. I have recommended upiko performances in the discord before but a lot of people aren't really into singer-songwriters in general.
upiko does cover other people's songs like the famous nakajima miyuki (you've probably heard their most famous song 糸ito covered by almost everyone) and so you can see some similarities in the sometimes really heavy emotive delivery but this song is upiko's song. This is one of her staple songs she always sings while busking. You may have heard this song before - i *might* have shared in baka broadcast virtual car driving background radio - maybe - but i get that this entire genre is probably not really your preferred style of music.
kind of similar in a big kind of delivery but not the lower-than-contralto that upiko may be, and does perform with a backing bands regularly (as not a busker) is miyuna - but it's the same kind of style - trying to be soulful, slightly sultry, playing the acoustic guitar with some piano, bass, and drums, and electric guitar. Upiko on the other hand is a busker so that means she very very very often is performing solo which totally changes the equation for nearly everything. for my random music youtube account that's not my main youtube music account, upiko was #5 and miyuna was my #1 most watched musical artist (although upiko didn't make my top 5 in my youtube music account)

She popped up in my RUclips only a few days ago.
French chanson at it best, except it's Japanese. Her voice reminds me somewhat of Dutch singer Lenny Kuhr, her singing style and vibrato reminds me of Edith Piaf.
I will definitely listen to her more, but not very often.

Yeah, 1:33 into the video and already know I'll have to take a pass on this one.
