"Nerdy neurodivergent doting father". Yes!! that is a perfect description for Lakan. I love this series so much and one of the primary reasons is that we are instructed on how to read/watch the story in the first episode and so many of us (inlcuding myself) ignored it. "Don't make conjectures" Luomen tells us. Yet we do and we judge Lakan as aweful before learning the truth. Mystery readers gonna conject and the author laughs at us :). In the first episode its also mentioned that ignorance is harmful. Maomao agrees yet she willfully embraces ignorance at time as a form of self protection. This is a fun series and I am glad you shared your reactions with us.
Yessss, the NNDF Lakan is! This series is sooo great and Luomen told us all along, didn’t he? But this episode proves him right 100% - And I was most certainly caught hook line and sinker. That’s a great point about MaoMao and self protection, too! Thank you for the comment and kind words! I definitely love this series!
This episode is the rug pull moment in the making from the start of the series. It spent so long warning the viewers about making assumptions, and then it painted Lakan as this extremely nefarious character, and everyone ate it up. Lakan's "I wish I had forced myself on her" is referring to the moment he picked go over chess, with the hindsight that he could have demanded to buy Fengxian. Even the "dirty trick" he "employed" was more technically something Fengxian did instead of him. What I mention next is based on you having been you being ok with the extra info of Lakan leaving the couch on Jinshi's office, as it's from the same source: Lakan ending up in the military is actually much darker. The reason he got there was his father's interference, it wasn't enough to make the half-brother the heir, his father sent him to the military in hopes of Lakan being killed in action to cement the half-brother as heir, that's how worthless he thought Lakan was.
I love this rug pull so much! I definitely ate it up! That’s a fair point about the go game, too, and Lakan realizing he should have bought her then. Also, that is horrifying about Lakan and the military! Wow…that’s really sad, actually. Poor Lakan. Thank you for the comment!
Happy Holidays, Romania! A backstory episode always brings out some crazy twists! The switch on our perceptions on Lakan is a great bit of writing. Not only in the grand scheme of things (like not actually being an awful guy) but also in the small details (realizing his viewing of others as chess pieces is probably just an neurodivergent thing). All of our interactions with Lakan have mostly been through his conversations with Jinshi - and with Lakan being very mistrustful of Jinshi, of course he would come off as slimy and nasty to us! When Lakan is surprised by the fact Maomao is employed under Jinshi I think it's because he was under the impression the Verdigris house had sold her to him as a courtesan (that was the rumor going around the palace), therefore not under any work "contract". Which is possibly one of the reasons why he disliked Jinshi so much in the first place. I think when Fengxian and Lakan are both thinking about playing their games during sex it was another way to show how similar their priorities were. They were less interested in physical indulgences and passion, finding more pleasure in the analytical or mind exercises like Go and Chess (each just thinking of their preferred game). In that way they present somewhat asexual - and because they're both that way, they're almost like the perfect person for each other.
Happy Holidays to you as well! Such crazy twists and I loved it! Lakan’s reveal on his character is so well done! And yessss, since he doesn’t trust Jinshi, his attitude comes off slimy - that’s such a good point! And ooh, I also love that explanation that they just wanted to play the games instead of sex. And ugh, as someone on the ace spectrum, their relationship is just perfect to me. Thank you for the comment and kind words!
I would love to know the similarities and differences between Chinese chess and Go.There is a kind of intimacy and exclusivity bc they’re both games of two; chess representing Lakan, and go representing Fenxian. Lakan only being able to see Fenxian is like a chess/go player waiting for an opponent to complete the game. Lakan drinking juice (like wine) is the funniest thing. 😂 That is like a sea-hardened sailor drinking milk. In the end, like you say, he is just a neurodivergent doting dad. 😅 There’s a scene back in episode 3, where they are sending Fuyou off, Maomao is looking at her pinky.
Yes, I love seeing how Lakan and FengXian represent these two games that are similar but different! I LOVE that it was just juice Lakan was drinking the whole time! I love it! And oooooh, that is a really good note about Episode 3 - I can’t believe it was foreshadowed so long ago! And that it ties to FengXian and her not being able to be with the man she loved - genius! Thank you for the comment and kind words!
I was WAITING for you to get to this episode XDDDD The twist was so good!! The clues were all there, but we were all led to believe the worst out of Lakan, but then Maomao's motto came to slap us in the face and BAM! He was just an awkward dad whose weird doting tendencies annoy the hell out of his daughter lmao XDDDD You were the only reactor I watch that caught on (or at least questioned) whether Meimei was in love with Lakan way back in the episode where we were told about the courtesan that caught syphilis and Meimei said "I think I'll wait a little longer" right after Maomao questioned how she could deal with Lakan, saying she really thought what he offered for Maomao was a very good deal and that it wasn't so bad. Back when I first read it in the manga, that was when I started doubting if Lakan were as horrible as the story was seemingly painting him. I was QUAKING in my seat and withholding myself from commenting when you point that out cuz I didn't trust myself to say anything without inadvertently spoiling XDDD Lakan called the finger-severing thing "yubikiri". The subtitles are a bit misleading, because in Lakan's specific case it may not be *just a curse. Yubikiri was a popular thing in Edo period Japan where the courtesans give the men they love their severed pinkies to declare their devotion to them (I think nowadays only the yakuza does it. They sever the pinkie(s) of people who don't keep their word. It's basically hardcore pinky-swear). Coming from Fengxian, it could go both ways in its meaning. She might want to convey her devotion to him despite everything, or she might want to cynically curse him, like "I loved you so and yet what have you done to me". Either way we interpret it, it's devastating TTATT
The twist is sooooo good! I was definitely duped by the story! I love it! Thank you for the compliment - the series definitely makes you question right up until it gives you all the details! I’m glad that you were considerate and didn’t spoil me - thank you so much for that! I know it’s hard to wait on your hands sometime with that, so I appreciate it! Ahhh, another patron was talking about how the yubikiri was like Twittering Birds Never Fly - that is a great point about FengXian as well. But yes, either way, it’s heartbreaking! Thank you for the comment and kind words!
As someone else said, there is a condition called prosopagnosia, also called "face blindness" that causes people to not be able to recognize faces. about 3% of Americans have it. There are varying degrees of it. Some people can recognize people they see every day, but can't see other people's faces. Some can tell faces apart in photos, but not in real life or vise versa . Some can identify a close person in real life, but doesn't recognize them in a mirror or in a picture. Some can see nothing. Some can see faces, but not expressions. Some causes of it are genetic, autism, alzheimers, or brain damage like inflammation or stroke. In the novel Lakin knew the cups contained hard alcohol, but not what the "poison" was. Maomao tells Jinshi that the "poison" is sugar and salt to make the alcohol be absorbed faster. Going off what you said at the beginning of the episode about Lakin not knowing Maomao well, he assumed the alcohol wasn't very strong because Maomao was a small woman and was having no problems with it. It leads me to believe he has no idea about her love of poisons or her high tolerance to them. Maomao was scratching the back of her hand a lot throughout the game. Jinshi assumed she had a bug bite on it. Which goes well with Catspaw being used to treat bugbites. And along the line of Fenxin wanting a baby: the courtisan chooses WHEN the guests come. So she could have been tracking her cycle to up the chances of pregnancy, and - since Pairin is pan sexual- Pairin might only be with woman or only doing other things during her hight of fertility. Known living relitives of Lakin: his uncle Loman, his daughter Maomao, and if I remember correctly in an earlier episode it says he adopted a nephew to run his estate for him.
Yes, I will talk about that condition in a future episode! It is really neat that the show takes something like that exists and applies it into this series, but should I be surprised at this point? That’s interesting to know what the novel has included for this episode! And yes, I’m going to talk about her cycles in the next episode as well! And yeah! We have that nephew too, but who knows if MaoMao will get to meet him! Thank you for the information and the comment!
There are people who believe this red herring makes no sense and for me and alot of people who ahem understand this show this red herring is brilliant. I remember way back in episode 7 or thereabouts when we talked about the idea that Maoamao and Jinshi are wearing facades and none of them are showing their true identity its in the same way that the show skillfully builds up this red herring surrounding Lakan. First of all, Maomao may know more than she lets on because at the start of the arc there was a conversation she had with Luomen that we never got so if that is about Lakan then that might come back. The simple fact that Maomao knows he doesnt drink alcohol means someone has told her about Lakan to a certain degree. It's fully possible that Maomao knows the story and still cant stand him. Maomao despite being taught not to act on conjecture does it all the time with Jinshi so it wouldnt surprise me if its the same with Lakan. I feel like she wouldn't rig the match for him to lose and choose a courtesan if she felt he was untrustworthy. This entire match could just be her way of giving him the benefit of the doubt and having him move on with Meimei since it's implied with her conversation with Meimei that she wants to be bought out by Lakan or it could be that she is giving her mom and dad the conclusion they need. It would be emotionally bittersweet if Lakan finally is able to reunite with Fengxian and take care of her. Maomao has definitely been an unreliable narrator in the past so we will see. Lakan is interesting because he approaches Jinshi saying all the things that could get him hated. He self-loathes so much that he wants to be seen as the villain because he genuinely thinks that he is at fault when he truly isnt apart from him being short-sighted and not realizing the bigger picture in regards to the consequences of his actions. Fengxian could have been less cryptic and just told him I'm pregnant instead of expecting him to get it with the buyout agreement falling through. Their story is tragic because Lakan could have ended up with her and had a loving family and Fengxian could have been a mom and was just left with bitterness and pain so much so she tried to curse Lakan by sending her finger and Maomao's. Maomao has looked at her pinky alot and some people even noticed how its drawn weirdly and now we know why. There is a condition called prosopagnosia that causes someone to not be able to discern faces. Ive learned about it through romance dramas 😁 but essentially it could be neurodivergence or a mix of a physical and psychological condition. There are several details that we can now assume because of Lakan's condition. Since he cant recognize Jinshi's face he probably brought the couch so he would be sure he was coming to the right office in case he couldnt immediately recognize Jinshi He probably doesnt know that Jinshi was carrying Maomao out but was more shocked that she was hurt. He heard that Jinshi bought Maomao out so he probably assumes that they were romantically tied or she was forced to be her servant not that she was officially hired by him. It is adorable how much of a dad Lakan is even if it comes across as creepy. The funny thing too is that he doesnt drink alcohol but he always leaves a drink for Maomao. I think its also wholesome that Luomen who understood Lakan best is now taking care of Maomao and understands her best as well and therefore has been careful with how he raised her. I wonder why Luomen didnt tell Fengxian that Lakan was sent away but maybe he's never spoken with her directly or maybe she was already crazy by then. I really want to commend you because the similarities between Lakan and Jinshi went over my head but yeah they both in a weird way because they were "robbed" of being heirs found positions that suit them Lakan being a military strategist and Jinshi not having to take on the role of a prince but instead carving his own path. Maomao is still technically from a high ranked family background because apart from the royal family Lakan is the second most important person in the nation which is earned through his military prowess. Im just realizing now that Jinshi is actually older than Maomao because Luomen was exiled a year after Jinshi was born because he was blamed for the death of the other baby. In the light novel Lakan actually went away because he was needed in the war or for military reasons and his family did not send him his letters which is frustrating. This episode is up there for me with episode 11 where we learn Ah Duo's backstory and episode 19 which was crazy. I cant wait for the finale and the shorts.
Spoiler for difference between web novel and light novel Romania. Unless I'm mistaken, Lakan being away for military reasons is only the case in the web novel, not the light novel, which is the primary source for the anime. The plot can differ a lot between those. I think in the web novel Fengxian is already dead when Maomao enters the Rear Palace, so Lakan never got to reunite with her.
Oh, I love the reveal with Lakan! I was so duped and it was great to get the truth brought out this way! I’m not sure if MaoMao knows the truth about Lakan, but it could be that she still doesn’t like him, but that seems cruel of her if she knew the whole truth, so I’m not sure. But that is a point about how she is with Jinshi though in a different manner. The fact she’s an unreliable narrator doesn’t help either, haha! And honestly, Lakan and MaoMao are very similar in terms of their self-loathing. I definitely feel for Lakan and FengXian’s tragic story as well. And yes, I’ll talk about prosopagnosia in a future episode since Patreon noted it. I do love how Jinshi doesn’t realize how similar he is to Lakan. Maybe it can be that Lakan and Jinshi get along one day, haha! *snickers* And maybe there’s hope for MaoMao and Jinshi getting together because of her status…maybe…we’ll see. But thank you for the comment and kind words! I can’t wait for the finale, the shorts, and the new season!
Maomao has been shown to look at her pinky during times of emotional duress. Now i dont think of lakan as a deadbeat too much bc he was forced to go on that trip and his jackass father didnt fwrd his mail -_-. Also maomoa's mom should told him the reason her buyout fell through (im preggers, you can afford me now, come get me). Tho she might have been under contract and unable to say. It is also mentioned that he has been trying buy maomao for over a decade with the old lady (and maomao) blocking him on that. He thought she was working as a courtisen and that jinshi had bought her a courtisen (and not on a work contract like he did). Also remember the whole pairen x lihaku business? Maomao mentions that the old lady will let the three princesses choose their buyers (even if it would be less money i believe) and i think it was bc of what happened to maomao's mom.
Hey, just wanted to ask if you're aware that the Bridon arc for link click is dropping on the 27th and if you're watching it as it drops or later (no pressure just curious) :) Also bilibili posted an art of shiguang dancing in the rain I'm so unwell 😭
Hello mod here LINK CLICK SPOILERS : Romania is aware of the new season of Link Click being on air soon. Romania really really wanted to go in blind in every show … Various people have been trying to tell her it’s a prequel arc instead of a S3 And giving her the name of the arc is also something she considers a spoilers Thanks for your understanding Be Happy

Hello mod here
LINK CLICK SPOILERS :
Romania is aware of the new season of Link Click being on air soon.
Romania really really wanted to go in blind in every show …
Various people have been trying to tell her it’s a prequel arc instead of a S3
And giving her the name of the arc is also something she considers a spoilers
Thanks for your understanding
Be Happy
