I think it comes down to picking a piece of equipment and sticking with it. Ray Barbee is probably my biggest inspiration for this: he’s shot his Leica M6 and 35mm Summicron for more than 20 years, nothing else at all really. His goal was 1 camera 1 lens 1 film stock 1 paper (to print his work on). We lose sight of what photography is actually about when we only think about the gear, and that’s what becomes so costly. I say this as someone who did something similar, Ivan, except I sold all my Fuji gear (minus the X-E4) to fund a Leica MP (film) purchase. I have a backup film camera if something happens to the Leica, but other than that, I’m doing what Ray does: 1 camera, 1 lens. If I use that same kit for the next decade (easily possible), the cost will be about $75/month. That’s still not cheap, but it means that I’ll have focused my efforts on the actual point of owning the camera: to make photographs. Anyway, thanks for sharing. Such a wonderful video, and hit the nail on the head. I hope you feel at rest with what you have, so you can simply enjoy the picture making process.
Great advice, but it is important to point out that you do not need a Leica to do this, and it can be done with any camera. In general it is important to enjoy the gear you are using, otherwise photography won't be as fun.
You style and tone give a feeling of genuine honesty which is very refreshing! You’re not someone who feels superior because you have a Leica but rather someone reached their goal.
Love this video man. I switched from Fuji to Leica and went through all the thoughts and emotions you represent here. It is way too difficult to place a value on how a camera system makes you feel. And I agree, limited my choices, makes the process more enjoyable. The fact we had the option to make the switch means life does not suck.
You are a real poet of photography. While many people discuss return on investment with the cheaper cameras, they value the result but not the process and miss the factor of joy in photography.
Oh man you hit all the right points how it feels to own and use expensive Leica cameras... Knowing you probably never have the latest and gratest or not being able to use native glass is a very annoying feeling that is hard to ignore. The clip of Jason unwrapping the M11 haha. I felt that. I thought Leica would cure my GAS but it made it worse because I started to look at what I could get if I sell my Leica gear. And now I own nothing from Leica anymore and it honestly feels like I left an abusive relationship lol. Like a girlfriend who makes you buy expensive shit for her but you get very little in return 😂 I remember that I felt a huge relief when I sold my Q2 to a guy at a parking lot and I didn't have to think about my expensive camera anymore and that I have to worry what happens when it breaks. Of course I bought another camera eventually but I still have money left and it sits in my savings account now for times when I needed. But thats just my story. Enjoy your cameras and don't overthink them! You will know when something needs to change :) And keep making these killer videos🙌
I feel like we’re on a very similar path when it comes to camera choices. Maybe cause I’m always watching your videos 😂 so…maybe a year later, I’ll be where you’re at. Healing from an abusive relationship.
@@ivunchow I was watching this great video, and I remember the story from Samuel with Leica. At the end we choose the excuses to explain (to ourselves) our decisions. If we are using a camera and thinking when it will break, like Samuel said, something is wrong, but is not the camera. Based on that, we will never buy an "expensive" gear, or anything for that matter, with the afraid that if it breaks, probably will be expensive to fix it. In the last 25 years, I used more than 20 cameras within 5 systems, plus around 30 lenses all together, and only had one issue with a Canon lens, my fault, I dropped it. Paid almost 1000€ to fix a lens that cost me 2000€. Yeap, was that expensive.. and for a Canon lens. But you know, In those 20 cameras, none of them gave me more pleasure than using a M camera, Is not about the results, it´s about the experience, it´s about the will more and more to go out and shoot, just to look at the camera... and that never happened before. At the end, after spending more than 50K in Canon gear, plus around 40K in other systems, I realize that Leica is not that expensive, because today I realize that I don´t need so many lenses, I don´t need so many cameras... and I love much more the art of photography than ever before.. @@Leicam10 If they are so comparable then why should a (working) photographer for example spend 9000$ for a Leica M11 if he/she can get a Nikon Z9 for 2000$ less? From a business point it doesn't make sense to invest in Leica as a system. Photographers who buy Leicas do it for the user experience and the Lifestyle it comes with. And nothing wrong with that and I will never say Leica cameras are bad. They are great tools that will last you a long time. But in actual use in the field they have limitations that feel unnecessary in todays age (again its all my personal opinion). I get to my destination faster with other brands. I appreciate the simplicity but sometimes too much simplicity can also get in the way. It is not hard to ignore the countless features of a camera and only focus on what you need. I rather have too much that I can neglect if I don't need it than encounter a needless limitation that ruins the shooting experience or worse hinders me in getting the desired result. The high price tag is only justified because of their exclusivity as the only brand who offers true rangefinder cameras. Great Craftsmanship should have it's price. yes. But at the moment it feels as if Leica knows that they can keep raising their prices as long as they are in this unique position. And to me (and many other photographers who could afford a Leica) it starts to feel as if they don't care about photographers but rather the luxury brand oriented customer. I doubt that the legendary photographers who they pride themselves with would still use Leica cameras today. They didn't buy Leica M's at that time because they thought they are sexy or cool. They were the smallest 35mm cameras around and that helped them take more intimate photos. This is such a refreshing take as opposed to the mundane camera reviews, there is never a story, not that there has to be, but that's what you brought to the table, thank you.
Wow. I never write comments, this is my first, I just have to: This is by far the best video I`ve seen here about cameras or equipment - or perhaps about anything. So well made; the quality of filming, the sound, your way of talking, your voice, the honest opinions and the impressive reflections. Thank you.
I bought a Leica Q a few weeks ago, and put a little post on Facebook saying "I always thought I'd like a Leica" I immediately got a sarky comment about striking a pose from someone. I stopped posting on there a while ago. Some people just don't get it, whether it's cameras, cars phones or whatever. Anyway I'm really enjoying the camera and that's what matters. Keep it up Ivan
This one of the most wonderful and honest reviews on photography gear I've heard... Nothing compares to the fun one has... I'm not a Leica fan in anyway, what drives my interest is the experience of being out there in the nature, experimenting with gear and light and the results I get, so at the moment I'm pretty much in control of my expenses, but believe me I completely get it, the importance is to be transported to that state of mind when photographing...
awesome ethos !!! its all about excellence for the things that are important in our lives. I'm 77 years young and still striving to live by these statements.
I think the single most important thing in a camera is to love using it. Having that feeling when you pick it up. Second important is to be happy with your images. Nothing else matters. Simply nothing.
As a fan of rangefinder style cameras, i felt this a lot everytime i made i switch...from a canon dslr to a Lumix GX7...then a GX85...then currently on a Fuji XE3...i also realized there's no perfect camera...and since the photographer also isn't perfect, its the method/relationship that needs to be perfected...
Damn, I expected another leica hype video, but no! I love how honest you are about the overall leica experience. From the pricing to the non tangible factors that help make the system what it is.
Great video, man! You really nailed the (mostly) universal feeling of wanting something out of our budget, getting it, and then realizing we could live without it.
What a charming, honest, well-made video Ivan. As a senior professional photographer who has used and owned a myriad of cameras I can fully relate to how one can have an emotional bond with certain equipment that just makes one feel good and want to use, irrespective of technical specifications. The camera I could never be without is my Nikkormat FTn, bought for me by my mother when I was 19. To me, it's the best feeling camera of all. I have owned Leica but these days I am mainly a Fuji user, they get somewhere close for me in the digital realm but you can never beat a mechanical camera and an optical viewfinder. At least, not yet ;-) All the best.
I know what you are talking about. I own a Leica X Typ 113 and I love it. The picture quality is great, but what really matters to me is the feeling I have, when I shoot photos with it. I can't put it in words, but Leica is somehow different... a very special brand. Love it!
I also got into the Leica ecosystem and I really do like it. I started with a used Q and have added a SL2. I have mostly 3rd party lenses, Sigma and Voightlander, and that makes the ecosystem more affordable to me. Did it make me a better photographer, maybe because I really enjoyed using the cameras, it is fun, therefore I shoot more so and in doing so I have gotten better photos. There are many who may not understand your decision, but the workflow with a Leica, the build quality and the photos are something that I really enjoy and thats the most important thing.
Ivan Great, Very Inspiring video. I did the same thing last year. I carry my fairly new Leica q2 with me everywhere. It fits me, It feel extreme satisfying to hold and to create photos with. I get a feeling in my chest every time I see it and shoot with it. I have a SL2S and all M mounted Voightlander lenses. I wouldn’t give them up. The feeling I get when I use these camera is a feeling I hunted for when I used Sony, Canon and Nikon. But for some reason I never did. No it doesn’t make since to sell everything and buy into Leica. But I want to give back to this world. Give back by supporting the goodness in this world. And when I found Leica, or Leica found me. I read the history, and watched videos about the company and the people that create these amazing creative tools. And I was sold. Leica as a brand is something I feel good about because of the DNA of the company. And most of all they create beautiful pieces of art every time they create a new camera. Thank you for sharing Ivan.
Well Ivan, I can't say I envy the choice you made, but I do understand and feel the urge to rectify that which is missing from your photographic experience. In many ways this to, is a learning experience, it's the internal desire to make it count, to make your love of photography mean more than the sum of its parts. I wish you well, I wish you sincere happiness on this road you are about to travel over. It will be challenging, and at times awkward. It will feel elusive, and only becoming rewarding for you - that which you put into it.
One thing you're doing that I've look for online was a reason to own a Leica , I think you're reasons are cool , and your not afraid to speak the truth which I respect and like . Wish more people would say what feel about Leica one day I may own 1 !
I was totally ApertureBro in the first 2 min of this video (minus "can't stand him") but this is honestly a beautifully crafted and thoughtful video. Killer job! And keep on enjoying your craft! 🙏❤️
It seems to me that this connection with your idols should not be through using the same product as them; being honest, Leica makes incredible tools, but they are still mass products by consumer capitalism. I understand what you are saying, and I know that using the same tool as a great master is something really inspiring, but when it comes to a product, I think it is something very different. My point is that the inspiration from your idols is really beautiful, but it is perverted by the idea that using the same camera as them will connect you more. Perhaps the most transcendental thing would be to feel that connection when taking photos, or practicing your photography, under the same human condition, something more spiritual, to feel that in the act of practice, not in the product. What do you think? sorry for my eng, im from spain.
I get masochistic joy from putting expensive Leica items into online shopping carts, waiting until the ecstasy has passed, and then clicking the remove icon to clear the cart. That lasts me for about 2 days.
Same here: sold everything (Fuji GFX, Xpro) went with m246 monochrom, SL2 to accompany my very old, and well used M3. Love this system, especially with M lenses. Autofocus lenses- 24-90 used 90% of the time when AF is needed. 35 apo is unreal. But for my shooting, AF is really not needed. Mostly going to sell all L glass and opt for all M lenses. Have fun and good luck!
Man this was too good to watch. Not only that but it’s really relatable for anyone that’s ever gotten that crazy rush into wanting to purchase something. Sometimes it’s about the feeling itself to something can help make you feel better as an individual and that’s okay. I’ll say it again I really loved every second to this video. The storytelling to it all was great and my favorite part had to be the Jordan’s reference of a childhood memory a lot of us felt as kids once whether it was shoes or a new toy 🥲✌🏽
As someone who has been battling the urge to hop on the Leica train for my street photography this video offers a lot of insight. As a professional photographer I shoot canon for my week to week work, I don’t need a Leica for these jobs but I would love to own one…just to say I Do and to use it for my street photography, currently I use a m6 mark ii for my street and it does really well, but something about the Leica…I’ve already decided to pass on the D-lux 7 but even the Q2 is too pricy for me…looking at the digital CL and will prob pull the trigger on it later this year. Great video
I love how you get your flash off your camera and use it with a sync chord. It opens up a whole new world of lighting photography. I tell people that you have to get your flash off your camera. They don’t be liver me but it’s true! 😂 Great video!
I love the fact that this wouldn’t have been possible to make without a trusty Panasonic GH5 and 12-35. Just goes to show what truly matters is not the camera but the eyes and brain behind them.
There is nothing like shooting Leica. I get the haters too. If Fuji made a full frame M mount X-Pro 4, maybe. I hate the expense, the sacrifice made to even buy a battery but there's only one show in town and we ain't here forever. To have a Leica and lost is better than to have never Leica'd.
I’m going through the same now! And same as you I hope I will not regret it in the future, but I don’t think so, I’m sure we are going in the right direction.
What can I say …. Everything, so perfect, so right, thanks so much, I am a 73 year old guy with a life long interest in photography, digital as well as film, but honestly, you inspire me so much! 👍🙏
I heard this metaphor in a song once: Rich people making poor decisions and poor people making rich decisions. That can refer to money or choices. The wealthy people I knew growing up drove Toyota and Honda. I've met people who can afford the initial cost of a used BMW, only for it to sit in the driveway because they can't afford to replace parts on a luxury vehicle. Personally, I somewhat regret my Nikon D780 because I can barely afford Nikon glass so I end up buying used. But like you said, life wouldn't be so fun if I was more calculated.
Beautiful video. Appreciate the raw honesty. I shoot with a Sony A6600. Bought a used Leica 240 but what I really wanted was a Q2M. If money were no issue, I suspect a lot of photographers would embrace the simplicity of Leica. I’ll eventually pick up a Q2 and that will be that. Life is too short to anguish over gear. Get what you want, even if you have to save, and then go make your art.
Really interesting video Ivan, I've bought vintage glass because of the price rather than the latest hi tech but I have to say I bought a 1933 90mm, 1935 135mm & 1949 50mm Leica lenses and I can honestly say I have loved using these lenses, kind of quirky they have something modern lenses don't have and are interesting to use so if your short on money try an early lens just don't expect it to perform as good as your other lenses but you might be surprised, perhaps not so good in colour. All the best and keep being creative.
I own two Leica cameras. An SL2-S and an M-10-P Reporter. I am about to get married. Obviously I can't shoot myself, so my fiancé and I looked for wedding photographers. After narrowing it down to 5, the feel, composition and color rendering of one stood out. So, not knowing what gear he used, hired him. When we spoke I asked him what he used. He told me he started on Sony gear and went through a plethora of brands and finally landed on Leica. I could literally see the difference from all the other photographers that we looked at. Cleary, he is talented. However, the gear is part of it as well. You can get there many ways. You can dig a hole with a shovel, but using a backhoe is much easier. Leica is a backhoe!
Bruh. Talk about visual storytelling! This is marvelous, man. From the colour to the chapters, I enjoyed it all. Kudos to you, my dude. As a side note, about the snap focus you wished Fuji had, some of their cameras actually have a focus limiter setting so it's kinda similar. Anyway, enjoy your new gear! At the end of the day, we shoot with what makes us happy and what makes us want to shoot more💯
I did something similar recently. I sold all my Nikon gear and got the Fujifilm that I always wanted. I had a bit of buyers remorse when I saw the limited choices I had in terms of lenses and accessories I could get compared to Nikon (here where I live at least) but luckily thanks to my Nikon I knew what lenses I use and like and only had to invest in two lenses. A lot of people questioned me why I would drop so much on a new camera when there was nothing wrong with what I had, especially since it’s just a hobby for me. But I don’t need to justify it. I wanted it, I had the means. So I got it! I’m a huge advocate of not having to make a huge list of reasons to justify a purchase. If you did the research. Saved the cash. Then the only reason you need is that you wanted it. End of story
My first Leica was an M7. They were cheap at the time because they were the black sheep. A great first lens for the M mount is the Elmar 50mm F2.8, very sharp and affordable still. Great video! Lovely photos
Beautiful story you have told. Being a part of the Leica system definitely seems stressful, financially, but ultimately if it is making you happy then that is all which really matters.
There is some sort of hack for Fujifilm camera’s to get the Ricoh Gr focus system. You make different custom settings with a focus zone pre-loaded. Not sure how it works but is possible with the newer Fuji’s
absolutely beautiful looking camera... with that being said im still hard pressed to see how to this outperforms something half the price + video capabilities.
I get were your coming from, My photographic interests started in the 1960`s and when I became a photographer later on I learned my craft with film and manual cameras. Controlling the look of an image through your film choice, filters, exposure, processing and printing were/was an amazing experience. Going over to digital never really filled that void from film photography with manual cameras 35mm, medium and large format.. I retired from professional photography and sold all my pro kit I tried quite a few small ish digital cameras some with manual focusing none of them did it for me until I tried Leica, the cameras were so beautifully made and the lenses were some of the best glass I have used and manual focusing. I now use the Leica M9, Leica Q2, and Leica m type 262. Yes they are expensive but to my mind they are the best.
I sold my fifteen digital cameras (eight of them being full frame sensor ones) and have gone with simply a Sony A6000 & Zeiss Touit 32mm f1.8 (with an adapted Sony 85mm f2.8 as an extra option). Honestly I couldn't be happier presently.
I love seeing videos about failing. :) great video. To me it was always clear that it was never about switching camera systems due to actual reasons. It’s only about being uncomfortable to be happy not buying new stuff. So use what you got.
I LOVE my Leica! Just returned from being on a 32 day road trip with 22,368 images and more than 11,000 were with my Leica. The rest were on my Fuji 100s and 50r
I literally just did the same thing. I sold all my Fuji gear and my Q2(which I wish I hadn’t) and got an M and 3 lenses. I agree with you about the expense, but I really agree with you about the fact that in the long run it will be cheaper, as you definitely think before you buy. With other systems, you just buy because it is in reach. Even though you don’t need it. Now I have to joy of learning a new system and continue to be inspired by your work and others who use Leica and those who don’t. This was a really great video!
Wow, this is the first video I watched from you and it was amazing! My dream camera has always been a full frame sony. After buying one last year, I found myself wanting to shoot more, just like you mentioned! I'm still new and learning a lot, but I found a lot of what you said in this video to be true for myself as well! Also, if you ever want to, you should do a photo walk in Toronto! I'm sure there's more folks here from Toronto that would love to join!

I stopped posting on there a while ago. Some people just don't get it, whether it's cameras, cars phones or whatever. Anyway I'm really enjoying the camera and that's what matters. Keep it up Ivan
I thought canon's social media marketing of the mid 2000s was something but man... Leica's over the last four years has been something to behold. WOW.
Watching your video was an amazing experience. You are a very talented artist and deserve whatever gear inspires you.
This is one of the best presentations I’ve seen on RUclips. I agree with you 100%. It also translates to a lot of other things in life. Thanks.
awesome ethos !!! its all about excellence for the things that are important in our lives. I'm 77 years young and still striving to live by these statements.
I think the single most important thing in a camera is to love using it. Having that feeling when you pick it up. Second important is to be happy with your images. Nothing else matters. Simply nothing.
Honestly, probably the best video on this topic I’ve seen. Thorough, personal, high production value. Glad RUclips recommended this to me
Thanks!
Well said 100 percent
Damn, I expected another leica hype video, but no! I love how honest you are about the overall leica experience. From the pricing to the non tangible factors that help make the system what it is.
bro, the production of this video is so over the roof! This is high quality content here!
Thanks!
This video amazing! Loved every second of it
Thank you!
Great video, man! You really nailed the (mostly) universal feeling of wanting something out of our budget, getting it, and then realizing we could live without it.
Finding the right tool / system that works for you is such bliss. Happy for you!
Your videos are the best. Your perspectives on photography are awesome. Your photos are great!
Thank you!
Outstanding production - subscribed for the quality of your exposition.
Awesome video that stands out over most of what is out there. Great storytelling.
my favorite new photography channel bro, very creative!
Thank you!
I know what you are talking about. I own a Leica X Typ 113 and I love it. The picture quality is great, but what really matters to me is the feeling I have, when I shoot photos with it. I can't put it in words, but Leica is somehow different... a very special brand. Love it!
Great video. Enjoyed every frame from start to finish.
This is a masterpiece, probably one of my favourite vids on YT
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 thank you so much
Great, thoughtful and well done video....and your conclusion is right, it is all about the feeling in the end!
Your voice and the atmosphere is surreal, calming and narrative. Love love hour video definitely a sub!
Thanks!
I love this videos you making!! absolutely creative! keep it going on this concept!!!
Thanks!
Some of the best content and creativity I have seen. Thank you, simply, thank you
Means so much, thank you!
🙏🏻 Thanks Ernest!
Oh man I’m totally on your side. I support your choice in every possible way. You do what makes you feel better and be proud about it. Always.
The content is great when I watch the full video and I’m in absolute amazement. Great video, great story telling.
Appreciate it, thanks! 🙏🏻
One of the best video I’ve seen about that subject … everything was great . Bravo !!!
Thanks!
A very pleasing video from beggining to end. Well shot, and very well made points throughout. I love it
Thank you!
I was totally ApertureBro in the first 2 min of this video (minus "can't stand him") but this is honestly a beautifully crafted and thoughtful video. Killer job! And keep on enjoying your craft! 🙏❤️
He’d be disappointed 😂
Hi, great production on this video. May I ask which light meter you are using around your neck and why? I’m still learning lol )
Mostly going to sell all L glass and opt for all
M lenses.
Thanks! 💯 that’s all I wanted to say with this one
Great video
Good for you!! Congratulations!! Very nice and inspiring video!!
may I know the jacket you're wearing around 9:40? looks dope!
Thanks! Got it in Japan from Montbell
@@ivunchow thank you!
I’m guessing you used the GH5 for the camera shots at 16:44? What sort of post processing did you do?
best video-confession I ve seen ! did the same 50 years ago , I know and now you do as well ; BRAVO !
🙏🏻🙏🏻
Bro can’t agree more about the reason to have Leica. You spoke all the truth from our mind,
Thanks bud 👊🏻👊🏻
Such a powerful video. I can relate with you Ivan. Thank you!
Beautiful video! Can i ask what is the name of the piano song that starts at 3:10?
Very nice video, your are a great story teller and docu maker, keep it up!
Beautiful and excellently-produced love-letter to Leica and the passion for photography.
Thanks!
100%
This video hits hard. Every point is relatable and true. You are very talented brother! Coming from an introvert means I really meant it! Cheers man!
Thanks man!
At the end of the day, we shoot with what makes us happy and what makes us want to shoot more💯
Thank you!
Ivan this was simply amazing! The daily mindset of a Leica user.
Thanks man 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I did something similar recently.
Fuji cameras are joy to use
Amen :)
Love the honesty of this guy.
👏Brilliant! 🎬One of the best RUclips videos I watched ever. 📷Nice to see the Ricoh hiding in the shadows to the side of the Leicas.
Yea I gave that a shot, not really for me. GR still does it better
absolutely beautiful looking camera... with that being said im still hard pressed to see how to this outperforms something half the price + video capabilities.
Wonderful work. This video was really really touched my heart. respect!
Thanks!
thank you for the approach of this video. Beautiful
Amazing video my man. What was the leather strap you’re using
I enjoyed watching. Love the way narrate and the music.
I sold all me Fuji gear and moved to Leica last year and have no regrets... Great video... Thanks
A beautiful film Ivan , I hope you really enjoy your Leicas . I wish you all the best
Thank you!
Your storytelling is superb! You inspire me, keep up the good work!
Thanks!
What brand is the jacket you're wearing at 9:35?
I literally just did the same thing. I sold all my Fuji gear and my Q2(which I wish I hadn’t) and got an M and 3 lenses. I agree with you about the expense, but I really agree with you about the fact that in the long run it will be cheaper, as you definitely think before you buy. With other systems, you just buy because it is in reach. Even though you don’t need it. Now I have to joy of learning a new system and continue to be inspired by your work and others who use Leica and those who don’t. This was a really great video!
Fabulous video. It was a pleasurer to watch.
It’s the IT factor babe, and that never gets old-welcome to the fold-spend those greens, and enjoy having your Leica gear dude-you only live once!
Phenomenal Video Ivan ! It's just so right. You nailed the exact thing I feel.
Thanks!
