      A lot of good servers have this mentality. They're not looking to just spin it in and double-faults don't scare them.

      It's because he's up 40:0, and has a powerful and fairly reliable 1st serve. For him, if he makes 1st serve it could very well be an easy game point. My 1st serve is maybe 50% on a good day. I may still go for two 1st serves if I'm up 40:15 or 40:0, but my serve isn't big enough to win easy game point anyway.

    • @twinwankel
      @twinwankel 6 месяцев назад

      Well you have to consider his competition. If Clay was playing a top 100 pro, I doubt he would have this mentality. Zverev can get 70% of his first serves in but he rarely uses two first serves. Clay wasn't pressured at all by Jack so why not bomb his second serve.

    This matchup was a great lesson in the importance of weapons when you get beyond 5.0 NTRP/"high level" recreational tennis.
    Jack has no technical flaws in his game, he's great at constructing points, I think he even hit fewer unforced errors overall, has great footspeed, etc. But Clay's weapons are simply bigger. It's easier for Clay to inflict damage out of nowhere and it's very very hard for Jack to put real pressure on him with his own shots.

      Yup, and this is the big differentiating factor all the way up to top level imo. David Ferrer's an example of a guy who made his game literally about as good as he possibly could have, but ultimately hit his upper ceiling and could never consistently beat the guys with the biggest weapons, like the Big 3. The good news for all us scrubs in the comments is that we will never hit our upper ceiling where physical factors like height literally limit your capacity as a player.

    Hey Winston, i had a question for Clay and im curious if you had discussed it at all with him or know the answer.
    How did Clay decide to play with the Technifiber Triax string? I rarely ever hear about pro or elite level tennis players using multifilament strings. Did Clay have some elbow problems that caused him to switch over to playing with a multifilament?
    With tje way he hits the ball, I'm shocked he doesnt break the Triax string within 1 hour of hitting.
    Also id expect him to more spin and control with Poly? Curious to hear your thoughts on it.

      @davidcane8011 6 месяцев назад

      @@dpadron sorry but no, he is not. By ATP level I mean guys who play regularly on the ATP tour, namely top 100/120. Clay at his best wasn't even top 400, which means he wasn't even a legit challenger level player, but rather a futures player. Indeed, his professional record shows that's the only level where he had some real success, whereas at challenger level, other than the odd run, he was almost always knocked out in qualifying or first round. Not mention the ATP level, where he never even won a single set (in fact, he only played one match, thanks to a hometown wild card). By the way, this wasn't meant as a diss - Clay seems like a really cool dude and obviously he is an exceptional tennis player: if you know the game, you're aware that to be even in the top 1000, you have to be an absolute alien. But the original comment was about "the levels of tennis", and I was just making the point that there are a number of levels above Clay's (already superlative) level.

    We definitely need a Karue/Clay matchup, although they'd both have to reach the final.

    Clay commits major foot faults on his deuce court second serves. Try around 9:30 for a good example.

      True. Back foot way past center service line.

    First?
    Well, since I am commenting before the video is actually visible, I'll try a prediction: 8-2 or 8-3 Thompson.

    Great match. I want to see clay vs that Indian pro I forgot his name. And if the Indian guy beats him, then I want to see that Indian guy vs that cru guy ,the one that beat Clay

    Nice matchup! 👍 I think Jack played well and hung in there. It would be interesting to see a 2 out of 3 set match here. If Clay's level dropped a bit or starts missing his serve, Jack could've had chance for an upset

    wow a bet against Hermont - the beast who was undefeated until he ran into Karue / Clay (fair enough too as theyre ex pros!)
