My first car was a 95 Grand Marquis that was built on October 29th 1994, the same day I was born. I loved that car, and the shit I did to it was insane. I'd jump it, blow over curbs, non stop burnouts, J-turns and Rockford's, and even went mudding in it a few times, but that car never gave up. The only real problem it gave me in 4 years was blown shocks. I have to buy another Panther soon.

Until one month ago, I proudly owned a 1998 Grand Marquis LS. It had 120,000 miles when I bought it in 2009 and I only put 30,000 miles on it myself. Easily the most beautifully designed, comfortable and reliable car I've ever owned. Glides like it's floating on a cloud and has power to burn! It can really giddy-up! Every time I took it in for service, the mechanics would ALWAYS say, "you sure got a good engine!" Couldn't even hear it running - purred like a kitten. Broke my heart when I had to junk it a month ago because of issues that were collectively too expensive to bear. Finding parts was becoming more and more difficult. I've been crying everyday since, and I just won't rest until I find another to replace it. She's an Old School American Beauty Glide-mobile. You can keep your Toyotas and Hondas. They can't compare to the comfort and sleek & stylish American auto-making at its best. I loved that car.

This particular one has bucket front seats, a center shifter, the most powerful 4.6L V8, with dual exhaust, and a moon roof!! It extremely reliable, runs great, I can get 20mpg if I'm easy on the throttle, still solid as rock with 110,000 miles on it!! Looks like new. I can say it's the best vehicle I've ever owned!! Just lucked into a 2004 GM GS with 67000 miles, 2 private owners, no wrecks, regular service docs, with five new tires for $8K. (2023 post covid/supply chain chaos)
The only repair to do is a 2 x 3" rust spot.
By far, the most relaxed driving in my 68 years. Happy to see a youngster in tie dye appreciating these. GMs beat CVs since most CVs were abused.
EZ stereo upgrade since it is double DIN.
I can only think I will die before this ride does.

Ok...as a larger person, this is the ultimate vehicle. I cannot stand those center consoles that squeeze you into an uncomfortable position. As you say...the Grand Marquis is like a sofa... and it is so comfortable. The bad thing... they have a known problem that develops. When you hit the brake it accelerates. I just had my throttle body, and then my acceleration pedal replaced. That was not enough..I then had my computer reprogrammed. Aside from that I love the car.

Loved the "driving a couch" comment. The other thing that's nice about these is with the auto trans shifter on the column, there's no center console on the floor.. Lots of left-to-right leg room. Another thing no one makes anymore, except in some of the big pickups. Nice video.

Hey. I've owned five Panther based platform cars in my lifetime with my 07 GS being my current daily driver. I agree with your review of the car. If there was something to complain about, it would be its handling in winter weather. My example has 70 K original and is a dying breed. Those of us 50 and over recall growing up riding in these vehicles as they were commonplace back in the 70s and 80s. That's another reason I like it. It's familiar like a well worn, but comfortable pair of shoes you just cant rid off.

I do my own oil changes and some repairs. I put rebuilt lighting module , new fan, pulleys, blower motor, new accumulator for A C. Remanufactured climate control. New wiper motor. And new driver door window motor. Spark plugs and coil packs. This over the course of many years. I do love driving this car. If I had to pay labor for all but the transmission repair maybe I wouldn't. Oh yeah I'm soon 69 years old.

The fuel pump is in the gas tank but can be installed without dropping the tank. Wonderfull nice idea. Too bad the school boy designers don't put a fitting to check fuel pressure on this model. The pumps are cheap too unless you fall for the b.s. that you need to install factory original. Just watch that the replacement pump has a " bubble" flair on the outlet pipe that the small hose is clamped on. Otherwise the hose might slide off. These cars drive nice and get high 20's per gallon of gas.

I put a variable spring in the back to stop the roll and a 3.27:1 axel on accident . I took it off a p71 crown victoria. After that I had to reprogram the ecu because its a 05 drive by wire then i had to find the air box because it ran rich. The previous owner already put dual exhaust on it. I also added a external relay from the light control module for the head lights because I need head lights (lcm recall) . I also upgraded the transmission from a 09 lincoln town car and changed the pigtail to it. After all that I invested in metal timing chain tensioners and replaced the hardware. I need valvue steam seals just run 10w30 instead.

It's 2.73, and I love it. It's great for cross country trips, doing 65 mph with the overdrive and cruise control on, it gets 30+ mpg, and the engine is turning over just above idle. Probably why they last so long. My recently purchased 2007 (my third Grand Marquis, all LS models) has just 47,000 miles on it and should last forever if the other two are any indication. I put 328,000 miles on my first one and it was still running fine. My '07 does have a tachometer. The beige color is certainly 10 times better than black. My 2007 interior is light gray, exterior is metallic silver. All three of mine were/are completely stock. Avoid the white paint. It peels off like crazy. And the car cannot be repainted unless you remove ALL of the defective white paint.

They put the “certified calibration” on the gauges because in the CVPI, the speedos have to be certified in order to get accurate speeds when pacing someone, so I’m assuming they either certified all the cars, or just recycled all the gauge clusters and didn’t remove it.

I have a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis LS w/ Handling (178K) Its paint is a bit bad, but it was garaged for most of its life as a weekend car by a old man.
It runs mint, just like it did off the lot in 2000. I've had zero problems with it, I even used it for a bit of light street racing. While the paint is being restored (clear coat is peeling and it needs tint and rims polished.) It beat a 2003 Mustang like nothing. Once it hit second gear on a rolling start against a 2014 (i believe) mustang. The mustang got it on the kick off, but then it hit second and shot like lightening.
I keep getting offers at car meets. Everyone wants to buy it off me or get to see the engine. Everything in it is stock and offical ford replacement parts. (Timing belt and water pump) those were the only parts added because I quote from the seller "It said in the manual to replace it"
Now I don't red line it, just do a few quick blowouts and I do constant checks. I always warm her up before I do anything considered abusive. I never push her on my twice a week drives and I legit only go to the store or back at random. I paid 1,200 USD for it. I did so much research on the Panther Platform you couldn't believe.
When I am not driving or showing her off, I go to concerts every few months. Ive only had her for two months and did a light car camping session. The seats are like sleeping on a couch. Not as comfortable as a bed, but good enough to get a restful sleep. Interior wise, I love the interior. It plain and simple, it feels like you are sitting in a thunderbird or some older muscle car its so laid out. Its body roll is easy to get used to and a charm of the vehicle itself. While it is a cruiser, it definitely feels like it should be respected. Its a BIG car with BIG trunk space and a BIG engine. My mother compares it to a small truck. I love it!

    • @hotrodmercury3941
      @hotrodmercury3941 5 лет назад

While it is a tank and ive done my fair share of scrapes. You can't really damage a car like this. Out of all the cars my family has own. (This car is my first. I learned to drive on a F150 though) this is the most rugged. Despite the sheer size akin to a beater from the 1950s. Its well respected on the road because it looks copish. Which doesn't bother me any, it means people won't launch off a light and hurt someone else. Just look on here "wrecked crown victoria/MGM" and find that majority of these cars that are "wrecked" still drive back from the crashsite. Acting as if nothing has happened! Try that with your new Nissan Rogue.
Only downside is the fuel consumption..however performance wise the car loves first gear. You won't leave it much while driving and this is because its a cruiser. The computer will top you at 84 MPH anyways or keep you on first or second. Its also very quiet!
Exterior wise. It looks unassuming, its a great heavy sleeper. However any car guy worth his salt will not mess with a Panther. Ive had people refuse with lighter cars sheerly because the power this beast produces. There are so many parts you can add to a wonderful vehicle like this. Mustang to crown vic. Make it look intimidating, offroad or unassuming.
Ive seen some that are 500k upwards. Thats what makes the Panther so loved. Car guys or gals who do have them don't let go until they wreck or die.
Im a aviation student who goes twice a week to another town to do my training. However I spend most of my time at home.

I have the same car, same color but mine is a 2002. I got it with 94000 on it. Only a few small complaints. #1 the traction control doesnt work. Well unless its under 20% outside, then it works until the car is warm. #2 the wiper motor keeps going. Pisses me off ot no end.#3 the G.M. seems to have a cheesy suspension compared to the crown vic. I've dumped lots of cash into the front end.( To be fair, I do live in Massachusetts and the car is big, heavy, and old, I get it) #4 I've been pissing through the exhaust gaskets that connect the system from the headers.(stock) quick and easy fix but none the less. Still love the car

I'm looking for a grand Marquis. I know there good cars. Couple of guestions. High miles on these cars, do not seem to be an issue. From what I can tell. If the car looks well, and has high end mileage. It shows the vehicle was maintained well. Second, is it true that the suspension on these cars, are similar to the Lincoln. Of course without the airbag suspension that was, I believe, was standard with later year Lincoln's. Now I read up on the 2003 to 2005 margs, and if correct, eighter those years or one of those years had a couple of recalls. One was a head light issue. The lites would shut off while driving. It was said to be some kind of modular or relay. What ever keeps the lites on. Second. The gas filter would leak, causing chances of fire starting. And that, if I read correctly. Purolator after marker set up , even if it looked , and appeared like it was sitting right, would eventually leak. So alot of info here. You seem like your proactive with all cars you evaluate. What are comments on these few things. Looking forward to hear what you got thanks buddy

Hey, I'm the actual owner of the car in the video. I had to replace the lighting control module under recall like you mentioned. That was the only issue I had with it. The coil packs can be a pain in the ass the replace and the transmissions dont last much longer than 200k miles.

3:47 I heard that it’s not good to run something continuously from the obd2 port. Something like it might burn it out and then no more obd? 🤷‍♂️
It’s a cool idea. My aftermarket head unit can display similar stuff but you have to buy the adapter cable which I didn’t. Not sure if that uses the obd2 port or not.

I have this car... My 18 year old son drives it.. would like to change the exhaust to make it sound more like a mustang but that's about it for now. I also have a 2000 Lexus LS400 (last year of 4.0) which is almost 300 horsepower.. it goes 0 to 60 in a little over six seconds.. pretty impressive for its time... Come review it.. 😎

that is not a grand marquis gauge cluster, thus the "certified calibration" and 140 MPH speedometer, and black face. Grand Marquis have grey faces and go only to 120. That is a P71 Cluster swapped in.
