Of course children are a gift but not every person is equipped to provide for a child mentally or financially. Many traumatized children learn beliefs that may protect them emotionally and physically as children and continue with distorted beliefs in adulthood. Not everyone should be parents.

Summary: speaker is not totally wrong from a medical standpoint. But definitely does not give an accurate medical portrayal of IUD's and oral contraceptives.
As a current medical student studying the reproductive system, wanted to clear up some of the medical points in this video, so that we can pay attention to what this man has to say about the ethics behind birth control and not get so thrown off about the medical points. After all, he's an ethics professor, not a health care professional like he states.
    1. He's making pretty broad claims about oral contraceptives and IUD's. Not totally right. But not totally wrong either. Here's what I mean. He states that IUD's work POST-conception. There's 2 types of IUD's: copper and hormonal. It is true that IUD's can impair implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus. HOWEVER. The main mechanism of action is actually prior conception. IUD's will lead to sperm toxicity and death (copper) or no ovulation aka no released egg for the sperm to fertilize (hormonal). Meaning the chances of getting a fertilized egg with an IUD already in place is almost impossible in the first place. The only scenario that would make sense is if the egg is fertilized and the mother chooses to get an IUD placed somehow hours/days afterwards. Sure then, an IUD would work post-conception.
    2. Oral contraceptives are a similar case. The main type of oral contraceptives is a combination of estrogen/progesterone. Their main mechanism of action is to suppress hormones released from our brain (hypothalamus/pituitary gland) which then means no LH surge or ovulation. Which means no egg is released from the ovary. No egg. No fertilization. Sure there are certain types of oral contraceptives (progestin only) that will create an environment in the endometrium (womb) that less favors implantation. But progestin only oral contraceptives are not prescribed as much anymore. And progestin also works to thicken the cervical mucus, so that less sperm enters the uterus. So technically yes. If a woman is on a progestin-only contraceptive for some reason. And sperm happens to get pass the cervical mucus barrier and etc. It may work post-conception. But this is not the main mechanism and just wanted to highlight that for all you.

Thanks for clarification, putting any kind of an object into wife's body seems brutal to me. Burden of birthing is already upon her, why not help her with other things and just be careful? Use condoms and just be careful with God given precious wife!! Christians ought to be taught these things, but I see so many Christians get triggered by discussions of birth control which is not helping anyone make right moral choices.

@@Vpy2023 I think it’s not christians but Catholics who are against birth control. Catholics believe that one must not perform sexual intercourse with any means of trying to prevent conception. Meaning each time they have sex, it has to be natural without contraceptives and depending on whether an egg is available, one might or might not get pregnant. I personally feel that God gave us brains to make decisions and we ought to have sex in a responsible way. If we are really not ready for kids, we should not try to have kids. It does not mean that we don’t have sex with our spouse, but maybe use a condom to prevent an unwanted pregnancy so that we can continue to give pleasure to our spouse and enjoy God’s gift of us in our marriage. Because sex is not just for procreation, it is also for us to enjoy with our spouse. Of course if we use condoms and still get pregnant, it just means that it is God’s desire for us to have that child and we should just go on to have that child. Under normal circumstances, we should always enjoy God’s gift of sex in a responsible manner.

I appreciate that you at least distinguish different types of birth control and reasons for it. I'm a single, celibate young woman taking an oral pill that prevents ovulation solely to prevent ovarian cysts. After having surgery to remove an extremely large (over 12cm) cyst (performed by an oncologist due to concerns on the ultrasound). The oncologist then checked me again a few months later to see if I was developing more cysts (which I was, despite remaining on the pill). The dr told me that each time I have a cyst rupture it forms more scar tissue on the ovaries, which impairs fertility. So along with not wanting more extremely painful ruptured cysts, and the possibility of needing more surgical removals, if I ever want to have children once I marry, I need to stay on the birth control until I'm ready to try for children. I'd happily castrate (without anesthesia) any man who tells me my birth control is a) not medically necessary (oncologist told me "if the cyst ruptures before I can surgically remove it the infection will kill you in about a week. But don't worry about the pain. You'd be unconscious from the pain within minutes and we'd just keep you comatose afterwards. It's really the only way to control that much pain." or b) a sin. My birth control is the only thing preserving my fertility.
Then there's my mother who required a hysterectomy in her 30's. After me (baby #4) she had a few very bloody miscarriages (admitted to the hospital after each one. 6 years after me, she was finaly able to conceive #5 that lived, but had complications (affecting only her, not the baby) the drs wanted to do a hysterectomy immediately after the birth even though lil sis slid out without even a proper push and was caught midair because they weren't quite ready. My mom objected to the hysterectomy saying she wanted at least one more, so they told her she better get busy as soon as she was healed, and 2 years later #6 was born (almost 11 lbs. with half a push) then they wanted her to heal before the hysterectomy, plus she didn't want to jeopardize nursing. But by then she was extremely anemic. Even with birth control (not nearly as good as some kinds now) she'd bleed for 3 weeks and be lucky to get a week off (while nursing and on strong oral pills). Four months after baby sis was born they decided to operate (left her ovaries tho) and took her months to recover because she was so anemic but also low on blood from the past 3 years (including 2 very hard pregnancies). What pisses me off to this day were that many of the "good Christian" women from church refused to help with her 5 children (thankfully the older kids could help lots), housework, caring for an infant and toddler while we were at school, and her recovery from surgery because it was a "sin". Eventually my 2 grandmothers each spent 2 months living with us to help with everything. So much for the "church family" helping.
It is judgemental "Christians" like this who give true Christans a bad name and drive others away from Christ. Frankly, it's really just none of your business to judge if someone is worthy of assistance, and you need to just help those who need it if you are able to do so. Mind your own business, err on the side of helping, and let God sort out the rest. God won't punish someone who helps where it might not actually be needed, but you will be judged for refusing to help those who you could and should have helped.

As a guy I totally agree with your stand ✂️so as to protect your own life. After what my mother went through I took “measures” trying to protect my wife’s life after the birth of our son and her not recovering even after a year, it wasn’t until afterwards we found out we were dealing with her narcissistic family bent on our destruction. To this day I’ve never regretted my decision to stop at one child only that we couldn’t reverse the damage from her parents doing sexual trauma to her while growing up and then regain her health back.

Contraception is a sin. It’s disordered against nature, plays God & violates the natural law. The Fruit of the Reformation is rotten. Christians are to have no part in contraception. This is actually answered straight from scripture. Read 1 Corinthians 7:1-40. Sex is not for only having children. God understands we have desires so that's why having sex only in a marriage is not sinful at all no matter the purpose. you are definitely miss understanding. There is freedom in God under His word. Sexual pleasure is not sinful between wife and hatband. God never says we NEED children. Just like he says we don't NEED a wife or husband. He gives us that to actually avoid our sinful ways. He gives us a way to have sex and honor Him at the same time. That's what marriage is.

Through the guidance of the Holy Spirit within you, you will discern what is right and wrong. While the scriptures do not explicitly state whether sexual intimacy outside of procreation is good or bad, they emphasize the importance of self-control. If we struggle with self-control, it is better to be married to one partner and to express our love for them through the act of sex (only for procreation) while supporting each other in our journey towards the Lord God.

The writers of the Torah, along with the NT authors, would NOT have understand the word slave (doulos) as referring to a kidnapped person performing forced labor. This is because the punishment for "man stealing" was death. By biblical standards, the slavers in the south who owned Africans that had been kidnapped would have been sentenced to capital punishment.
There are only three circumstances in which slavery was lawfully performed:
1.) Wsomeone could not pay a debt they had incurred and needed to pay it back

The difference is that hormonal birth controls are abortifacient--they terminate pregnancy in its very early stages after the egg is already fertilized, which is the point when life starts. Such birth control methods include the morning after pill (plan B), IUDs, daily birth control pills, etc. (although the last 2 aim to prevent ovulation, ovulation can still occur and if an egg is fertilized, it will not implant into the uterine lining but will miscarry as a direct result of the womans choice to take this medication, i.e. an abortion). These birth control methods are sinful because they involve killing a human child after conception. Non-hormonal birth control methods, such as condoms, pulling out, vasectomy, etc., are not inherently sinful because they prevent the conception from ever taking place, and thus they shed no blood. These methods can be acceptable for Christian couples who want to pace the birth of their children, or feel that they are done having children.

No natural family planning is different because with natural family planning a woman observes her cycle and chooses to abstain from having sex during her fertile days. A woman can only get pregnant a couple of days during the month. So if she is not able to accept the responsibility that comes with having sex (with good reason and not just for selfish purposes) she chooses not to engage in it. It's the responsible thing to do. Abstinence is not wrong that would be the same as saying priests and nuns are sinning and preventing pregnancies from taking place by not having sex. With artificial birth control a woman also can not or does not want the responsibility which comes with having sex but she wants to continue having sex during her fertile period because she still wants the pleasure of sex without any sacrifice or responsibility that comes with it. It's the irresponsible thing to do. Think of it in this way if you want good grades you can either put in the hard work, practice self discipline and study or you can cheat. Both produce the same results but the methods used are different, the one being moral and the other immoral.

Sperm was not meant to go into a condom, napkin, hand, swallowed, spilled onto the floor or wasted but into the vagina so it can bear fruit and bring forth the next generation. Vasectomy could be acceptable given the circumstance for example if it's done to stop cancer from spreading but if it's just done because you don't want anymore children it's also not right. The only acceptable form of birth control is natural family planning where a woman observes her cycle and abstains from having sex on her fertile days. There are only a couple of days a month during which a woman can get pregnant. So she can still have sex on her infertile days but you should not be engaging in sex, during fertile days, if you are not able to accept the responsibility that comes with having it- Also should add that natural family planning should be used prayerfully and with reason and not for selfish purposes.

Is it a sin not to trust God?
There was a time in church history when believing husbands and wives did not have the option of modern birth control methods , and they either obstained or simply trusted God with the outcome; or they knew something of the ovulation cycle and when pregnancy might or might not occur.
"But now we have 'modern' methods of determining the outcome, who nees to trust God implicity as a child in this matter. We have the answer now and so we will determine our own future."
The Bible is plain: It is God who gives the increase; it is God who said multiply and fill the earth; it is God who opens the womb and closes the womb.
The Scripture says to cast our cares upon the Lord; to cast our own souls upon the Lord. The Scripture says that the body (whether man or woman) is for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. We are told as believers to trust in the Lord with ALL your heart and lean not to your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him adn he will direct your paths - Prov 3;5, 6
Why is that now - apparently, too hard to do with respect to having or not having children?
In whom or what do we really trust with our bodies?

the Bible doesn't speak about 'birth control' as we are accustomed to today. I understand your words. All I am saying is that God wants us to trust Him with everything, and that includes our bodies, and that blessedness of marriage and procreation. There is a much greater joy in trusting God even in marriage and leaving to Him an outcome. He can open a womb and He can close a womb. It is God who gives the increase.
If husbands and wives want to use the devices of men, that is their business. There is a perfectly natural way for birth control, two actually , one is abstinence - but that is not a good idea for a prolonged time.
The other way is what was called the Rythm method based on the ovulation cycle. This way neither the husband or his wife is being subjected to 'mechanical devices or unnatural pharmaceutical concotions which are foreign to the body and can change the wifes body over time.
People are free to choose to do or not to do what they want.

You are right about the "Catholic" church - it IS all about money and poitical power. It is a religious system, but not one that is truly centered on Jesus Christ - except in name only.
And tragically many protestant denominations across the board are also about money and political power; and what is more, many protestant - Christian denominations are being seduced to return to the Ruthless arms of the Roman Catholic system. Rome calls it Ecumenism.
I would only urge you to simply call upon the name of Jesus Christ.
He was not a money hungry, political entrepeneur. He truly does care about your person - spirit, soul and body.
Yes, 16 years lost. But Jesus can redeem those years for you if your will trust Him with all your heart.
Jesus can turn wasted years into a fruitful life, one in which we can be at rest in our souls - and be satsified with Him, and one in which He can help us to truly help others in His name.
      I will pray for you.
You may have wasted 16 years in the 'catholic' faith; I wasted 53 years of TV watching. But God has been merciful to me and very patient, and has given me a clean conscience before Him. I love Him who gave Himself for me.

I'm glad a Protestant discusses the issue of birth control. But, interestingly, he did not answer the question, "is it a sin?". This is a prime example of why Protestants don't have any teaching. They cannot teach. They don't have the authoriry to teach. He admits that birth control is not good because of the word control itself. Then he goes on to justify that it is not really bad, not a sin if, A big IF, it only prevents conception or if it does not cause abortion. Thanks to the Catholic Church, she teaches. She teaches that contraception is wrong.

    • @adfmo2195
      @adfmo2195 6 лет назад +3

Domingo Melchor The Catholic Church teaches many things that are not supported by the Bible whatsoever. So what exactly is your point?
And Protestants don’t have any teachings?! Protestant Christians teach the BIBLE which is the Word of God, not what a mere mortal, wearing fancy robes and living in an extravagant palace in Italy says.
However, if you were actually listening to the video you would’ve gathered that it is not a simple yes or no answer to the topic at hand. Out of the two forms of birth control, the one that aborts a pregnancy is wrong because it is ending a life already begun. So that would be considered a sin but not necessarily the other forms of birth control. Also, the presenter was speaking to the motive of the couples wanting to use contraception as well. Are there health reasons involved, is the couple needing time in between children, etc.
Not everything in the Bible is as cut and dry as the 10 commandments (the 4th of which you as a Catholic don’t actually observe, which is a sin). Other topics are based on principals, like modesty, worship music, etc. Principals give guidelines which leave room for different perspectives within said guidelines. Thus you’ll have different interpretations of these principals. Like modesty for instance: Some women believe that modesty means wearing dresses down to the ankle while other ladies will wear dresses to the knee. Neither are bad or contradictory to scripture. Just different. I believe the same goes for contraception (accept in the case of abortion, which is murder).

Never use it. Consider the true reason you are using it. Is it simply a vanity. Best way to control weight is to practice self control, what the apostles call "doing violence" to the flesh. Eat less and be more active. Some people are genetically overweight, which can't be prevented. Still, physical activity is good for your body soul and mind. Most all drugs are unnatural and BAD for the body. Also, you don't know how this may affect your future fertility if you are married and DO procreate in the future. There is no experimental way to determine if coitus has lead to fertilization without removing the egg/zygote from the fallopian tube/uterus and examining it under a microscope. Consequently there is no way to determine if any contraceptive prevents implantation and/or fertilization. Therefore if someone says that any contraceptive is an "abortifacient" they're engaging in speculation and basing their opinion on ideology and not science.

So if birth control is a sin, then what about the infertile couples who will never conceive a child, through medical means or any other way.
What about the people who never marry and therefore never bear children? Will they all be doomed to hell simply because they never had kids? What about the children who sadly passed away before they ever got to grow up and have children of their own?
I'm so tired of the debate of, "is it a sin, is it not a sin?" The short answer is no. It isn't wrong for a Christian husband and wife to choose to not have children.
I don't want children myself. Yes, I want to get married and be a wife someday, but children will never be a part of the picture. That is unless I continue to help care for my nieces and nephews, or if I someday go on missions trips to show love to children here in America or in other countries.
I just don't desire to have children of my own. I never have, actually. I've spoken to God on this topic more times than I could ever remember. One time that really sticks in my mind though was one day when I was cleaning in the kitchen. My mind strayed as I worked and I got to thinking about having and not having children.
"God," I asked, "why am I this way? If I'm not meant to have children, why didn't you just make me infertile to begin with?"
Then there spoke a voice so warm and gentle in the depth of my soul. "Because I gave you that choice."
I fell to my knees right there in the kitchen and cried, thanking God for His loving grace, and I thank Him for it still.
Isn't it a wonderful thing? Being given the gift of choice? We as humans have been granted that gift by God himself. How we use that gift has been left up to us.
Some women might feel birth control is immoral. Others may believe it's perfectly okay, as long as it's only preventing pregnancy and not killing it.
It all just depends on the woman. And do you notice that the majority of women who believe birth control is immoral actually WANT children themselves? So they judge and put pressure on those of us who have chosen not to procreate. I'm so done with being looked down upon by women who have or want children simply because I desire not to.
Yes, children are a beautiful gift from heaven, but they're a gift not all people are meant to have.

Prefertilization (preventative fertilization) birth control is sinful for other reasons not related to abortion, too; that is, using sex for an end other than its Godly ordained purpose (bodily, physical pleasure - which is only a means to the real end) - the intent of having children or at least to be open to new life through sex, whether or not that ever comes about.

IUD’s work by causing irritation in the uterus and thickening the secretions to aid in keeping the sperm and ovum separate....however, if this doesn’t happen and conception occurs, the IUD prevents implantation and also increases the risk of an ectopic pregnancy. The main mode of action of IUD’s is not to prevent ovulation although some do have a mild hormones that may suppress ovulation. Again, that is not their primary mode of action.

We don’t have to make women keep having babies just because their body is made for it. As a man, I find it very sick to make my wife go through so many pregnancies. For me, having 2-3 is enough. It’s not about how her body looks after having children because it is a matter of fact that a woman’s body will change. She may have stretch marks all over her tummy, have broader hips or breasts that are huge because of the milk inside and become saggy after breastfeeding. But those are just normal reminders that a woman has done the most beautiful job of creating a child with her body. And having so many children means one will be deprived of sexual enjoyment with their spouse because with children comes great responsibilities and they might also be the ones interfering with your sexual life in their younger days.

I noted a few inaccuracies in the mechanisms of birth control. You should consider redoing this particular video.
In my personal opinion, no, birth control is not sin. By the same logic of “preventing life” or “preventing God’s gift” being sin, one could argue that abstaining or refusing sex is sin, which of course isn’t true. I also believe that God is who creates souls, not humans, so if a child is born, it was fated to be and part of God’s plan. If a human makes a decision that would otherwise result in children, then it wasn’t fated to be. God does not explicitly forbid the decisions humans make not to have children, birth control is merely a tool, to aid in that decision. And I disagree with your interpretation of the semantic of “control”. It is not control in the sense of controlling fate or God’s plan, no more than control over how fast you go to work and the decision to drive a car being a sin because it increases the chances of dying.

The reason birth control is sinful has to do with God's design for sex
God made sex for two purposes namely for procreative purposes and unitive purposes (meaning to deepen the love and bond between the spouses)
However one must never separate the procreative purposes of sex from it's unitive purposes because God never intended for the two to be separate. For every act in marriage to be chaste it must meet both the procreative and unitive purposes of sex.
Let's take IVF for example: it's procreative but it's not unitive because there is no sexual union which takes place between the spouses which bonds them together. Therefore it's not within God's will because it separates the procreative purposes of sex from it's unitive purposes.
Birth control does the opposite of IVF. The sexual union takes place but it's closed off to procreation thereby rendering the act sterile. So birth control separates the sexual union from it's procreative purposes.
Let's take BDSM as another example. It is possible for BDSM to be procreative but hitting, choking, tying up your spouse during sex does not bond you together so it's non unitive and therefore BDSM should also not be practiced in a Christian marriage because it also separates the procreative from the unitive.
Unnatural sexual acts are all non procreative and non unitive so it's not within God's design.
Not saying God wants us to conceive every time we have sex but we should at least be open to life resulting from that act so if it is impossible that a baby could result from the act you are doing or it's contraceptive then it's wrong.
People can look up natural family and use that (prayerfully and with reason) instead of condoms, birth control and artificial contraceptives if they don't want a million kids.

Who's to say that preventing implantation is a moral concern?
I'm not saying that it's not, but what is the authority on this?
Why are two free-floating sex cells that are attached any different from hundreds of free-floating sex cells that aren't.
Implantation onto the uterine wall can happen in three days or less, even if the cells begin to divide after three days the upperlimit would be about ~150s cells.

I don't think that identical twins are less people because they don't have unique DNA
And I don't think that the many cells in the average human body which are genetically distinct from the shared DNA of the rest of the body are a person.

In theory, but oftentimes cells incorporate the DNA from bacteria or mutate.
This is the origin of cancer but most mutated cells continue on without causing much trouble.
And then there are case of so-called chimeras, typically caused by the combination of fraternal twins but can be caused by other circumstances.
In which case one person could have two or more main DNA sequences with variations thereon out.
"Cells form a person, when they form a new unique DNA."
I understand that that is your position, but I don't know why.
As I mentioned previously you can have multiple people without multiple identical DNA sequences and as I just mentioned you can have one person with several unique DNA sequences.

This is what conception is . The fusion of male and female gamete is NOT conception, it is simply fertilisation 😂❤@@user-et9kk7wb6h

I used to do that before but I have stopped using that 7 and a half years ago. U have to know your fertile and your infertile days and act accordingly.

Well. That's also not good because you purposely kill the cells that should've been lives.

@Sadie Mezzo Yeah. But like, you do it out of your sexual desires, which is not good because you give in to them. If you are a sexually weak person, then you should marry an infertile woman. because using contraceptives is same as killing and wasting cells.

@chris widney there is an app that shows your fertile and infertile days, that's what my team coach says. U have 8 children !! That's a blessing.

@chris widney I know. That cells die naturally. I'm talking about purposely throwing off sperm cells so you purposely do not procreate life. You do sex but you don't want to create babies so you kill cells that you are not supposed to eject. Understood??

If men had to have children all forms of birth control would be okay I'm sick of men just thinking about their sick how selfish you are not pregnant unless the egg implants on the uterus wall half the time the fertilized egg does not implant on the uterus wall if your progesterone does not rise high enough are these all babies when it comes out on your next period

Thank you for addressing this. I like your kindness and concern. Where is the support for any kind or form of birth control in the Bible or in early church history? Many early churches fathers denounced it. I am not a scholar but have found no support for birth control in the Bible. God never remotely implies any kind birth control prevention in the Bible even in famine, war or hard times. I.e.. Look at the Israelites in Egypt. If they would have said, “hey, we can't have kids because we can't afford it, we don't have enough food, they will grow up in a cruel world and be slaves or they may get thrown into the Nile ( if a boy)” than they would have not populated so fast to a great multitude. The Egyptians would not have felt threatened and God would not have delivered a great multitude but a small bunch. Thank God the parents of Moses did not abort him. I learned from the Physicians’ Desk Reference drug book (PDR) in nursing school that the backup method for some birth control pills is that it prevents the fertilized egg (the newly formed baby) from attaching to the uterine wall, thus it is an abortion. When I found this out we stopped using birth control pills. We went through a natural family method course. NFP tells you to abstain at the most pleasurable time of intercourse for the women and which is the most fertile time. The Natural family method takes focus on the pleasure of sex and while avoiding the great blessing of responsibility that comes from the precious life of a new baby. This life is invaluable. There is a principle found in the Bible that says, don’t' separate responsibility from pleasure. God put the act of sex (pleasure) with the potential for responsibility and provision which is a Baby, a WONDERFUL BLESSING! Many people today see children as a liability and not as an asset. That is so sad. It is like they see children as a curse not a blessing. “Oh no, we are pregnant again.” God's command to reproduce and multiply has not be repealed by God but mankind is trying to it to some extent. Children are a blessing and having a lot of kids can save a nation from going under. Children are also a blessing because they expose our sin and selfishness that may otherwise go undetected.
