    Three turbines are turned off for 85% (approximately 60m³ per second, equivalent to 240MW) of their power for test purposes. At the beginning of the film, the machines are already stopped, so the rushing takes about 50 seconds until the water flows into the compensation chamber. Approximate size of the chamber about 80m long 15m wide and at the end it is filled 2m.
    Here is a video of the chamber without water • Obere Wasserschlosskam...
    Translated into English with Google Translator
    This is the upper water closing chamber of a pumped storage power station. The water overflow of the vertical shaft which projects into the chamber is slightly higher than the highest dam of our upper reservoir. Here a video of the Staumauer and the lake behind it ( • Gigerwaldstaumauer und... ). The sloping shaft (at first comes water in the video) is the channel that leads directly to the turbines. The water closet chamber floor is, of course, also higher than the upper reservoir. If, in an extreme case, all three turbines (maximum power 300MW at 75m³ / sec of water flow) in the lower compensation basin, by a lightning strike into the high-voltage grid (overland line 380kV) into the emergency shutdown, the upper water still flows. This can then be diverted into the upper water chamber, so that the pressure well and the inclined shaft can not be damaged by the excessive water pressure. I hope this explanation helps you and everyone else to understand this special water game.
Obere Wasserschlosskam...

      This is a test for an overflow chamber which is used in hydropower dams for when they need to shut down the turbines but the massive amounts of water running to them needs somewhere to go. This chamber sits a ways above the turbines such that the water loses most of its energy rushing up the tube there, after being diverted away from the turbines.

      Basically, when they close the valves on the feed pipes to a hydroelectric power plant, the water's energy has to be dispersed. This is how they do it. There is a large vertical pipe which tops out just above the maximum depth of the reservoir. That's the big round pipe at the top. The surge of water blows out of it and the energy is dissipated. I think the drain away returns to the feed, which is why the water comes up there too. It's called hydraulic hammer, and without these relief valves youd be unable to stop the turbines without catastrophic damage to everything. Scary to watch too...!

    I installed fire suppression systems for some years and "water hammer" was a phenomenon that we were all aware of and had various methods to avoid it happening because it could blow out valves and fittings made of cast iron and steel both as though they were made of aluminum or something. Keep in mind the stuff I did was using a maximum diameter pipe of 8 inches at the main, branch lines and stuff were much smaller than that. The thought of a water hammer happening with hundreds of TONS of water behind it is hard for me to even begin to comprehend, let alone imagine the type of destruction that could be created by it.

    It is a chamber that water flows into when they close valves on hydroelectric dams. If it wasn't there the force of all that water stopping so quickly would hurt the turbines, it is a phenomenon called "water hammer" practical engineering did a pretty cool bit on it you should check it out.

    • @DJShadesUK
      @DJShadesUK 4 года назад +28

      Ahh, I'd guessed that it was something to prevent water hammer; as the valves start to close the rushing water eventually diverts to the new path of least resistance which terminates in a big empty chamber where it can't do any damage. I'm further guessing the chamber is above the level of the lake so that it doesn't just fill up with water regardless of the position of the valves to the turbines?

    I’m fascinated by dams and stuff. Thanks for the explanations in the comments, really interesting. So I guess water hammer is the “thud” noise my pipes make at home when my washing machine stops filling or when the toilet cistern suddenly stops filling. So makes sense that when you have something similar but on a massive scale such as this, you could be in trouble if you don’t give that surging water somewhere to go. Makes perfect sense now. Thank you!

      Probably that chute is connected to the LP side of the penstock and lower reservoir which will also experience water hammer, faster, but at lower pressure change. The HP end of the penstock will have two sets of snubbers, one near the intake, and another near the the turbine hall. This probably will be near the turbine hall, though it is possible that it's the end near the upper reservoir.

      1) Water runs through a long large tunnel from an elevated dam/reservoire to turbines.
      2.) The water flow through the turbines is suddenly cut off, e.g. when there is a malefunction in a turbine.
      3) All the water already in motion in the tunnel can not be stopped, and would just destroy the valves and turbines if one would try.
      4) Instead, the moving water is redirected into a dump room (at an elevation higer than the dam itself, i.e. the water starts flowing uphill due to its momentum)
      5) with time the water flow decelerates as it does not want to flow uphill.
      6) the water flow stops and thereafter the water starts draining back from the dump room to the dam/reservoire.

      ein Mensch kann z.B. nicht in 2km Tiefe tauchen, auch wenn er eine Sauerstoffflasche dabei hätte. Das Wasser würde den Menschen förmlich erdrücken. Das Wasser hat allein im Ruhestand gewaltige Kräfte. Darum habe ich vor dem Tauchen Angst :-)

    I never searched for an Obere Wasserschlosskammer but I am interested to watch this Obere Wasserschlosskammer, that said I am not sure which is scarier, how fast it floods or how fast it drains away.

    • @darioinfini
      @darioinfini 3 года назад +5

      Well the flooding is not great, but the draining and going down that hole? That would definitely be a lot worse if you're caught in it.

    • @Tuberuser187
      @Tuberuser187 3 года назад

      @@darioinfini Yeah, I agree. If it wasn't for the cold water I would be confident in my swimming ability to get to something to climb up or hold on with, I used to surf, swim and body board at choppy, rocky Cornish beaches and can handle currents. The water going back down? I don't see anyone getting out of that, it drained so fast though this said the cold water is a huge factor.

      @@Tuberuser187 I'd be scared of both. Why don't they have a railing or cage around that hole?

    • @Tuberuser187
      @Tuberuser187 3 года назад +2

      @@stavinaircaeruleum2275 There seems to be a grab chain but otherwise I'm guessing the floor of the chamber is off limits most of the time, staff needing to work on it have to get permission and be sure the facility is offline for the duration.
