I have no idea why your not a superstar on youtube........i have learned things i didnt even want to learn about....im arkansas bread and raised.....you have a fan here son....Git R Dun
You are the only video that explained about true top dead centre and overlap and I looked for days. Your video gave me the knowledge to properly adjust my valves (2004 XR400R). Thanks.
D-Ray thanks again for the refresher course in 2020. Great video. Keep making them lot of us need it and enjoy your work and efforts. Just wanted you to know from the RUclips gang.
Thanks for the video. I'm trying to get a 1981 xl185s up and running, and the Haynes manual doesn't give a great description of this process. This video really shows what to do.
Great tutorial! My wife just got one this past year and we've been loving it. Also don't forget to check your decompression play as well. Not really a big deal, but just while you are at it.
I just recently acquired an xr 500 and there is a ticking sound coming from it I’m am going to try to adjust the values back to factory to see if it fixes it! Great videos thanks for the help!
Snap on makes a valve lash adjusting tool in 10mm and 12mm sizes..It makes the job go alot easier. I used them when I was a Honda tech. Check with your snap on dealer. Great video by the way..Take care.
Really liked your video and learned something new about rockin the valves to see if it’s on top dead center. Just goes to show you you can learn something new even at 75 years old. I have one question though I have adjusted the valves And now the bike is hard starting any ideas would be appreciated thank you.
I actually have the factory Honda version made by kowa-seiki, but since these vids are aimed at the do-it-yourselfer I try to use regular hand tools when possible. Thanks for th' info bro!
Good video with good close up! I would only suggest that you crank the engine counterclockwise to not loosen up the flywheel bolt. The way you re-tighten the lock nut is just how I do it. Do you know if the '85 XL350R also has a 'T' mark? I can't seem to see one. Take care
Yep, looks like new cam and rockers are in your future man. It would also be a good idea to flush out the crankcase, oil tank, and check the primary strainer screen when you replace your valvetrain parts. Don't want any debris from those worn parts scratching up the new ones. Let me know how your project turns out.
I watched your video, and yep, it's noisy! lol Try adjusting the valves, if it is still noisy, you probably have either a worn out cam chain, or wear on the cam and rocker/sub rocker arms.
Just watching the xl600r valve timing video. And was wondering once you've found your tdc doyou just adjust the exhaust valves and return the crank to adjust the inlets. Or do you find true tdc and adjust al four valves.
great video and fast to the point. do you know how what the spec is on a 1983 xr 350? and how to take off the cam chain tensioner? so i can time my bike correctly
i'm thinkin of buying a xr 500 r 1985 that doesn't run...cause well thats what i can afford ..all this stuff is very helpful ..i've done most of this b4 but rebuilding the forks and little things like witch way the oil filter goes in and the clearances on the valves are very helpful....i bought a cr 250 in boxes with a book and a new sleeve put er together and got 2000 out of it ...2nd gear didn't work and power valve and cylinder was worn out..any knowledge is useful thanks for posting
Good evening sir. I am a fan of your videos. You present well and in a language that is not overwhelming. haha I just adjusted a 87 XR600R. Runs like a son of a bitch. haha Thank you for being patient when making the videos. Most guys rush through and sound arrogant. You are good people.
awesome stuff ! I just got an XL600r same year. Having some backfire issues and its having a hard time running. I've cleaned the carbs tob to bottom, and hoping to check the valves soon. is it recommended to do this with the engine fully cold ?
Hi D-Ray Smith, I bought this 1984 Honda XL600R a long time ago and that I am planning to restore the said unit. After all these years, I have noticed that my Honda didn't have a Breather Separator. Anyway, is this Breather Separator (Part # 17370-435-315) really important that I should have one installed?
Will oil leak out when pulling the large crankshaft cover on the side that you used to turn the motor over?(I just put fresh oil so trying to understand if I can get away with not draining it again)
D-Ray! Great videos! Got a couple questions for you. Thinking of purchasing a non-running 1984 XL600R. Firstly, what would be a fair price for one? Seller wants $1000. Supposed to be in good shape, 24k miles. Engine rebuilt by previous owner. (not sure if that's good, or bad) The seller says it has no spark, so it won't run. Tough to diagnose through a post, but any idea if it's a simple electrical thing (coil, relay, or such), or could it be a nightmare and money pit chasing the problem. You're input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
I have no idea why your not a superstar on youtube........i have learned things i didnt even want to learn about....im arkansas bread and raised.....you have a fan here son....Git R Dun
This video will never die.
Want to know why? It's a Honda, they keep going with basic maintenance like this 😊👍
I love it, thank you. A nice guy, direct and to the point without a bunch of nasty-assed loud music. Perfect!
You are the only video that explained about true top dead centre and overlap and I looked for days. Your video gave me the knowledge to properly adjust my valves (2004 XR400R). Thanks.
Great job my friend! Unlike most videos where you can't see what the person's doing, the lighting in your video made that possible. Thanks.
Love these XL600 videos. You present the information in a nice timely manner and it is all easy to follow! Thanks for making these. Great job!
Micah Bearden Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the video. I'm trying to get a 1981 xl185s up and running, and the Haynes manual doesn't give a great description of this process. This video really shows what to do.

Great tutorial! My wife just got one this past year and we've been loving it. Also don't forget to check your decompression play as well. Not really a big deal, but just while you are at it.
nice job my friend....I have referred back to this post several times. Clear, intelligent instructions!

Would soaking the jets in parts cleaner be sufficient or I need to clean each individual hole in the jets
Thanks Jeff!
