I bought the 350th Tirpitz super cheap from a friend. Then found a 350th Yamato for a bargain price just a few weeks after. Not into ships really but it is a great way to learn stuff, both about history and building models going out of your comfort zone.
I snagged this kit, after I saw your preview the first time. Nice kit, but, there are a lot of tiny parts!! Spent more than a few minutes retrieving parts from the carpet monster. It is a very impressive kit!!
Boatbuilder myself, I whole heatedly recommend you start with the hull, and screw that down on a sturdy wooden base. Then you build the rest in modules, divide it up in mini models. and place them om the hull for safe keeping. that way, when it gets to much, you can pause it and build a nice 1:72 airplane or something else that tickles your fancy. Im sure you've seen Stefan Carlssons builds on flory models. he has a good system down (and the patience) mind you thats a beast of a kit to start with...
I have this kit and I find it very intimidating. I want to do my best and there is so much work with this kit. My other fear is where am I going to show the build . Such a great kit.
Tamiya makes photo etch scissors. You can use them for the SS photoetch. I thought they were the same as all scissors until someone got me a pair as a gift...great tool.
You are right about soul sucking when it comes to these ships.....I am in the middle of a 1/350 Tirpitz. I wanted to super detail this boat. Bought the Veryfire super detail photoetch set comes with brass barrels wooden deck, railing etc. That photoetch set alone has over 800 pcs. Literally took 8 hrs just to do the life boats. Six months in and you tend to get tired of it more quickly. Best advise I 100% agree with you on is build something else smaller at the same time. This way you get to still enjoy your hobby and it doesn't feel like a job. KUTGW Nigel. Greetz from the great white north...AKA Canada
Hi Nigel I just got this kid yesterday play the detail Parts it's going to take awhile to build I like your videos they are great it's probably going to take me a year to build this
Nigel, A ship? A ship? No, you wont will you?Nigel, you had that hum back in this review BUT when you got to the etch the hum went and sound was perfect
Thanks so much for your review! My next ship! I built the basic version of Tamiya 1:350 Yamota before(when I was in school). And now I am planing to pick up this hobby again.
Pretty impressive kit . the small deck guns are amazing (look like 20mm oerliken (spelling?) Cannon copy ) they have zero mold shift and no flash ,very nice ! Imagine if revell made this kit .. Imagine the clean up lol ! Great review Nigel , I wouldn't buy this kit but I would be happy to build it if I had it ,and that's a first for a ship kit .
I've been waiting to see you do a ship for a long time, love doing them myself. Great review, I'm sold on the Yamato when I'm finished my San Francisco project.
Nigel I am in the process of completing the 1/350 Scharnhorst by Dragon with MK detail set and wooden deck. I have been at it almost a year on and off. You really don't want to start this as a build along! Getting extra detail sets really make ship models stand out. The first thing one should do before the actual build begins is how is one going to display the model, water line or full hull? If full hull are you going to display it with pedestals or dry dock block or the kit supplied base. I for one like dry dock blocks along the keel. Plus it's wise to have the model displayed in a case. PS if you think this is a big model think of the 1/200 scale one. I have the USS Arizona build going on as well. Keep up the good work my friend.
Couldn’t agree more re “How are you going to display it”! I purchased Tirpitz and Bismarck in this series, for about £40 each.....and now I’m wondering where I’m going to put them....a bargain buy with nowhere to go....😂😂😂 Nevermind, I got some 1/700 ones and now some 1/2000 ones (all Flyhawk).....eventually I’ll build one and be able to display it.....🤪 Buy a mansion Nigel, that’ll solve the room versus display issues.....crowdfund for a large Country Pile....🤪😂😂😂
Not sure if you know this but If you double tap the iPhone screen on the bit you want in focus it will do just that. If you press and hold you can adjust the lighting as well. Might help. Love the channel by the way
Nigel she was a great ship and the model does her justice. I like building ships myself and have two ships on the go, 1/350 Trumpeter Lexington, and 1/72 corvette HMS Compass Rose. I like wooden decks. I have another ship project HMS Nelson WW2 1/200 scale trumpeter kit, with all the extras lol happy moderling
Great review Nigel. I love ships but like you have trouble staying focused on them. I just finished a 1/350 Dreadnought for a friend who did me a huge favor. I did it straight through and near the end I just wanted to get the darn thing finished. If it was for me it would not be finished yet. I would have done a couple of planes in between.
Great review Nigel of what appears to be a really well engineered kit. I’ve built a couple of large 1/350 scale ships in the past and as another person posted build them in subassemblies where possible, it helps keep the frustration level down and before you know it its complete and then you will be ready to build fully rigged plank on frame wooden kits. I have three in progress, two years on one, about 4 years on another and one more I keep looking at that is still in the box lol.
Hi Nigel, The holes you were wondering about are called "Hawse holes". I don't know how that name came about but I remember that from building the USS Constitution "Old Ironsides". The decking you keep wondering about is called "Diamond Plate" here in the states and comes in all kinds of sizes depending upon its intended use. It was hard to tell what the size of it is on this model as just as the camera focused on it you were on to something else. Anyway, great review. Bill G. Linwood Kansas USA
I have wanted this for years......congrats on making the plunge. I know it is a beast, but I would follow this series to the end. If I can't buy the kit, why not follow a master model builder. I am sure your mojo would survive the challenge. What I would also love to see is you finish your Soar Art Dora. Again, it is a beast, but something that I was enjoying you build.
If you want a challenge try the Hasegawa 1/350 Akagi. I didn’t go with the photo etch. I have no issues bending but the glue is misery to work with. If you get the fast drying thin CR glue it runs every. If you get the thick glue it takes forever to dry. I wish there was something better. So no photo etch for Akagi.
Regarding the boats -- they were stored in a boat hanger aft below the flight deck, presumably because the muzzle blast from the main battery was too powerful to store them above deck amidships as on other warships.
Nigel you have a good voice for these types of videos. The voice on any youtube video determines if i watch it or not and i've watched a few of your videos and really enjoyed them so thank you mate :) A quick example of good voice bad voice would be Jeremy Clarkson (good) dvd monday voice (bad) just so you get my drift and you are deffo in the Ckarkson section for me. I also appreciate your very descriptive explanations. On a side note, i dont have the patience to build any model that you build but still find your videos very entertaining. I wish i could build something like this. I buy diecast models for a quick collection. Thanks again :)
BTW Nigel, if I remember my history correctly only the A6M Zero had folding wings and that was just the tips. I may be wrong on this as I'm no expert but I seem to remember that just before the battle of Midway, the new Zero was sent to the fleet and they had folding wing tips. Bill G. Linwood Kansas USA
Would love to work on one of the Iowa class Battleships... I would probly lose my attention after awhile??! Good luck on this one!!! Sure it will look great!!!
I’ve never built a ship but of course looked at a couple through the years but never came around to it. But this one looks great. Maybe a future build along?...😱😃. Cheers
Hi! I would like to know how many parts there are. Up to three years ago I enjoyed building the Trumpeter German locomotives, and with photo etch each kit got me close to the 700 piece range. This ship looks amazing, even in bits and sprues!
Just a touch over 1600 peices, 1628 I believe. and a further 200ish from the detail-up kits (primarily the railings which are gorgeous but a nightmare to keep clean and tidy).
Hi Nigel, I hope that, when your eyes get better, you will build that ship, it's not really a mojo sucker, because it's like building different kits (turrets, superstructure, funnel, etc..), and the big hull doesn't have to be around all the time. I'm not really a finisher myself, but I started to build the older one a year and a half ago, w/photo etch (95% finished), I build other kits on the side, so it doesn't become a job, Kure pronounces k-uu-R-EH, not cure, and the Tamiya paint seems really dark compared to the photos, I lightened it with a bit in places. Photo-etch is the BDSM of modelers, pain that leads to pleasure... I hope you get better soon.Regards,

Yes, the old kit isn't a patch on the Premium edition.

Fantastic review Nige, just hope my client (who I'm building HMCS Snowberry for) doesn't see it - he's a huge fan of Yamato :O
Hawse pipe might be what you're looking for
Thanks.. I think the hawse pipes are what the anchor chains go through? I think I was looking for "FairLeads"?
Hi Nigel how sprues in this kit
Lots!!
Thank you buddy
Has anyone here built the older 78030 model? I'd love to hear your thoughts on the differences.
I havent built it, but just from looking at the sprues, this is a million miles ahead of it.
Wait, does that means that the gun barrel is not included in the box? We need to buy it separately?
No, you get plastic barrels in the kit, the upgrades are metal.
I wish other companies would give you jigs for pe parts, that tiny bit of aditional plastic cost few cents....
Knowing the Japanese, I would expect perfect symmetry from their woodwork. I would be more surprised if it was mix and match. It feels more out of character.
As most naval records were deliberately destroyed before war's end by the Japanese, I suspect that finding 100% accurate information will be difficult.

You might want to wait and get the Very Fire kit instead?
@NigelsModellingBench I know nothing of Very Fire, unfortunately. I'll go do some Googling. Thanks Nigel.
@NigelsModellingBench Antics have it at £249.99. I looked at a video review of the deluxe version, and there's more photo-etch than I have ever seen before. That's intimidating for someone who has never soldered before. I wasn't keen on Very Fire's instructions booklets. They seemed a little spartan, even though they are in colour.
