Quick answer to everyone's question. Sorry that i didn't mention it in the video. Filigree can be a generic name for this type of design as well as the leather technique that involves cutting "windows" in the leather. 😊 My apologies for not mentioning that in the video.
I started apprenticing with a custom saddlemaker when I was 11yrs old. I'm 75yrs old now. This doesn't look like any filigree I've ever seen. I don't have a problem with your carving and spoon molding , just your titling of the video.
It seems that it has been adopted for any fine work that resembles the original filigree patterns in jewellery. I agree with you it’s not what I thought but a google image search for “filigree” shows many things that now come under the name.
Another beautiful job Daniel. The tooling is magnificent. The gold was a really nice touch. It made the design jump off the leather. Now to try and duplicate it. Best regards, Richard
I think I would add a little strap to go across the bottom so the jar wouldnt slide out as easily, and you can remove the jar so it can be washed easier.
Daniel I think it would be a fun idea for you to try an engraving pen! I just got one to try as an alternative to using a swivel knife and I think it has potential to work really well but I would like to see you try it since you are a master at tooling and making beautiful designs in the leather. I also wish weaver would make their own engraving pen so we can have the best option on the market for our leather tooling needs 😉😂
Before marking the final mark, maybe you could put hot water in the mug and then wrap the leather around the mug to get a proper tight fit before you mark for the rivet?
OLD Leather Smith here, Hi Daniel Grest Job, Suggestions & Comments 1 I really like UR light over UR left Shoulder. Now I have been doing this a little longer than U so here R my Suggestions , Tape the back of your project & U never have 2 worry about the Leather spreading, just regular packing tape, put a couple drops of dish soap in water U spray or soak UR Leather & ALL UR TOOLS WILL WORK SMOOTHER in the Leather. 4 those who don't have a lit of money I use colored ink pens in a lot of colors, with different tips thin & wide. U CAN ALSO do the project in reverse, push the project down & leave the background up try it U still do everything except lift the peddles, I use the ORIGINAL PEDDLE LIVETERS no mall involved. Sorry 4 so looooong . GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️ 🥎 🙃
How do you carve something small? Like I see people do crazy detailed belt carvings and they only have around 2 inches of space to work. Even with steep bevels I have a card time keeping lines defined without smooshing other parts of the project
@Suit_and_tie_reptile_guy OLD Leather Smith here, once U use the swivel knife U can use a modeling spoon in many ways it's easier of course it still takes practice. More questions please ask. GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️ 🥎 🙃
So I had thought filigree referred to background cutouts of the leather with a colored leather showing through. Apparently it's referring to the design? How does this style differ from baroque?
HI Daniel. Love the pattern and the idea. I am having trouble getting the image like you show in the video. I get an image but it is really large and not as stretched out as you show. what tricks can you suggest to get the image . Thanks again for this video.
Originally filigree was “ornamental work of fine gold or silver wire formed into delicate tracery “. The origin of the word comes from Latin ‘filum’ meaning thread and ‘granum’ meaning seed. It seems that at some point in time it became common language for a particular type of scroll work including leaves and flourishes that resembled the patterns used in filigree jewellery. Filigree jewellery typically has “windows” or gaps through the piece or to a background. A google image search for filigree shows just about every style imaginable.
Actually, everyone here is right. 😊 Both this design, and the leather technique are both considered filigree. Looking back, that's something I should have mentioned

Sounds like a good question for a video. Thanks for the idea.

amazing work , but i think if you carved the hander strap will be better.
You could definitely carve the handle strap!
I thought filigree was when you cut out the background of the pattern and put a colored suede under it. I still have plenty to learn.
You're correct.
Same

Daniel, do those markers come in a fine tip? Using that fat tip, I could see it getting outside the thin marking area.
The markers come in various size options, we will link them here for you. www.weaverleathersupply.com/products/refillable-dye-marker
YT is playing a removal of the thunbs up again. My thums up disappeared immediately.
