    In Ireland the ratings in cinemas are
    G:General
    PG:Parental Guidance
    12A: 12 Accompanied
    15A: 15 Accompanied
    16: Nobody under 16 can see the film
    18:Adults Only

    There is another thing that the BBFC can sometimes do (but not all the time) that the MPAA (now just MPA) don't do (I think they don't anyway).
    And that's the fact that the BBFC also have the right to reject a work, and when that happens it technically means that work is banned in the UK. On their website, those works are listed with a N/A symbol in place of an age certificate and will also have a Unsuitible for classification section on the respective page. This is also why some films (even 18 rated ones) are still cut/censored in the UK.
    Also for the two PG-13 rated movies in America that are 18 in the UK, Taken (2008) was PG-13 because it was a censored version, UK cinemas were partially uncut at 15 (meaning only the torture scene comes from the PG-13 version, everything else different is uncut) and fully uncut for home viewing in the UK at 18.
    The Last Exorcism (2010), along with its sequel are actually rated 15 (always have been in both cinemas and home entertainment, even the bonus material for the first one is only a 15). The 18 rating on the DVD and Blu-ray boxes for those two films are probably indicating something else included on the discs (like bonus features that aren't related to the film or trailers that were rated 18 for other films). Another example I could think of is the film Bullet To The Head (2012), where the film itself (plus a trailer included as a bonus) is a 15 for both cinema and home entertainment, but the DVD and Blu-ray boxes show 18 again and it's possibly for other things entirely, not the film itself.
    I've also found examples of 12/12A rated movies that would sometimes show 15 on the box depending on the version, both Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines (2003) and The Wolverine (2013) were rated 12/12A for both cinemas and home entertainment (including the latter's extended version), but some (but not all) DVDs actually have a 15 on them despite those films never recieving a 15 rating officially, nor did the trailers and/or bonus material for these two films recieved a 15 either (one trailer for The Wolverine did recieve a 15, but it was only used for cinemas, not for physical media). Either this situation is similar to the 15 rated films showing 18 on the boxes or it could be due to the fact that they seem to be strong for 12/12A thus they decide to just bump up the rating on some DVDs despite the BBFC not seeing those two films again.

      David Natan Sagala Why?

    • @spencerandersen271
      @spencerandersen271 7 лет назад +1

      David Natan Sagala Eh, a government-sponsored censorship board is far from ideal. However, as an American I appreciate the BBFC'S willingness to take public opinion into account and act more harshly towards violence and horror. In the states, Split (the new M. Night Shyamalan movie) got a PG-13 but it definitely should have been rated R. I mean, it's about a deranged creep kidnapping young girls. Yet the BBFC acknowledged the disturbing plot and gave it a 15. Nobody under 15 could watch Split in the UK, whereas in the US an eight year old could theoretically buy the ticket and watch it on their own.

    • @thedudewhomadethisvideo
      @thedudewhomadethisvideo  7 лет назад +3

      +Spencer Andersen PG-13 horror films usually always get 15 ratings in the UK, considering the plot the imagery is far to disturbing for a 12 year old. Oh and yes to your edited comment the BBFC are strict on stuff they believe can be easily copied by kids, suicide is another one, if suicide techniques are shown it will get an 18 rating, it happened to House and House of Cards. Recently John Wick 2 was cut to get a 15 rating, due to a suicide scene which would've given the film an 18.

    In Australia, our classification rating is pretty much anything including video games. They include
    G
    PG
    M
    MA15+(restricted)
    R18+(restricted)
    And even an X, restricted 18+ classification. Because of unessecary use of material in an artistical way, in film or its either a video pornographic dvd, or just simply just banned. But we rarely get any film, that's a rating of an X18+.

    Hey dude just saw your video and loved it. I was wondering though, could you make another video comparing the BBFC to the Canadian film review boards (they vary by province, but I live in Ontario so that would be the one I think you should use most for comparing with the BBFC)? As much as the MPAA has a numerous amount of flaws, I think Canada's systems have different flaws but in the same amount. We have G (same as US G and UK U), PG (same as US and UK PG), 14A (audiences under 14 must be accompanied by an adult), 18A (audiences under 18 must be accompanied by an adult, and in the Maritimes and Manitoba, audiences under 14 are forbidden from seeing the film altogether), and R (same as US NC-17 and UK 18). However, nowadays most American R-rated movies only get a Canadian 14A rating, sometimes that makes sense and other times it doesn't. Also, The Outsiders, which got a PG-13 (theatrical version got PG since it came out back when PG-13 didn't exist) rating in the US and a 12 rating in the UK, got an 18A rating here in Canada for unexplained reason(s). That's actually my 1st biggest flaw with Canada's systems, that for some movies their ratings are unexplained as to why they have them. My other biggest flaw with them is that multiple copies of the same movie get different ratings when sold in 1 province [for example, Commando, Misery, and The Patriot have multiple DVD and Blu-Ray copies where some are labeled 14A and others are labeled (Canadian) R even though they're sold all in Ontario]. Please could you make a video comparing the Canadian film review boards to the BBFC? I don't think anyone on RUclips made a video discussing the Canadian film ratings so I'd love to see you be the 1st one to try.

    In Poland, we have KRRiT which only applies to television (and Radio for some reason) but films do get rating from them but not for the cinema (and is used on Polish IMDB called FilmWeb) meaning that there is no age rating for films in the cinema also not age rating on the DVD/Blu-Ray boxes for some reason eventhough KRRiT is supported by the Polish constitution.
    History/Future speculation: We used to have one for the cinema during the time of Communism but it was abolished and there was no age ratings in Poland for a long time until TV companies got together to create what will become the KRRiT and got recognition from the constitution and I believe it is a matter of time before it will be used in the Cinema and have it on DVD/Blu-Ray boxes.
    The current age ratings from KRRiT:
    All Ages
    7+
    12+
    16+
    Adults Only

    Did you know that the blue age rating on DVDs is the movie’s rating in the Republic of Ireland, and for cinemas over in Ireland they have a 15A and 16 rating but movies rated 16 at the cinema in Ireland are rated 15 when it comes to DVD.

  • @jamesmoranthefascinatingyo1764

    Believe it or not, Scary Movie 2 is only rated 14A in Canada even though it’s R-rated in America and a 18 certificate in the U.K.

  • @jamesmoranthefascinatingyo1764

    Movies rated TV-MA on cable TV in the US are either rated R or NC-17 by the MPAA, also the NC-17 rating used to be called X. From 1968-70 the R rating meant 16 instead of 17, which is closer to our 15 certificate since 16 is only a yr older than 15. 17 is inbetween 16 and 18 and many countries have a 16 age rating instead of 15 like Germany. So both 15 & 18 certificates in the U.K. fit in perfectly with the R- rating in America.
    Did you know that children under 17 can watch R rated movies at the cinema in the states If they are with a parent or adult guardian? Also Canada has a 14A and 18A certificate and the Republic of Ireland as a 15A and 16 rating.

The ratings are very flexible they are getting less and less equivalent.

    The Indian film rating system (CBFC or Central Board of Film Certification) is worse than any other film board. Not only that they censor a lot of titles, they classify a lot as if they were the other way around.
    FILM RATINGS
    U (BBFC: U / BBFC: PG / ITALY: T)
    U/A (BBFC: PG / BBFC: 12 / BBFC: 15 / MPAA: PG-13)
    A (BBFC: 15 / BBFC: 18 / MPPA: R)

      Pretty interesting, I own a number of Indian films, 3 of them that I own got 18 ratings from the BBFC. They are Darr, Zinda and Anjaana Anjaani. Darr and Zinda because of strong bloody Violence, Anjaana Anjaani because of the Suicide theme in the film. Did those films get A ratings in India and where they censored. I know the DVDs I have aren't censored because they make a point of saying they are uncut on the cover.

    To be fair though Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is NOT a kid's cartoon (it makes South Park look like Sesame Street). The BBFC probably rated the whole series 18 as a sort of "hands off" warning for kids who saw the pretty girls on the front and thought it was like the Powerpuff Girls (or for the unfortunate parents who didn't notice the "Panty" and thought it was just harmless fun.)

    • @thedudewhomadethisvideo
      @thedudewhomadethisvideo  7 лет назад +1

      No nothing like that, it got an 18 because of the sex reference, the main episode that got it was the Transformers parody episode and the frequent use of the word cunt in the English dub. I used Panty and Stocking in the video as an example of the BBFC needing to rate every TV episode, that's why it's in the video and the BBFC rated it based on their guidelines, nothing to do with what you're implying.

      David I also like how the BBFC is stricter on things kids can copy. According to the website Toy Story was rated PG because Sid played with matches and tried to detonate toys with M-80s, which wouldn't sit well with most parents. It also says the movie Nerve got a 15 certificate because there were very dangerous stunts and dares (like lying in front of a railroad track and walking on ladders over multistory buildings) that preteens could copy. Smart.
      As an American, I appreciate the BBFC's transparency and strict rules on violence/stunts that kids couple imitate.

    Guess what; I do cartoon dub overs and all of them that I do in that topic (cartoon dubbing) is NC-17 rated. They contain thousands upon many thousands of uses of very strong language in them altogether (in 105 of them). I've done 105 of those dub overs for almost 8 years now. If the BBFC rates all of my cartoon dub overs (if they were to be my actual work), they would 100% 18 cerficates for constant very strong language. All of the ones that I dub over were kid only shows and movies being dubbed over with NC-17 rated/18 cerficate dialogue in it.

      We don't have TV ratings in the UK, after 9pm anything goes on TV. If the show is on Netflix or amazon or out on blu ray though it goes through the bbfc like anything else. I can tell you though that some TV-14 shows like House, Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder are all rated 18 in the UK. Then you have TV-MA shows like The Crown, Narcos, Succession all with 15 ratings here. Stranger Things, Supernatural TV-14 but 15 in the UK. So TV is still very different too as you can see.

      I did some research and apparently it was because of the film's themes of abortion and incest that got it an 18 in Ireland. Also, the film has not been classified by the BBFC since 2000 which I assume was the last time it was classified by the Irish censors so one can assume the Irish film classification would downgrade the rating from 18 to 15 in 2017 since the film is very tame compared to other 15 cert films in Ireland over the past few years

    Also Die Hard 4 or in the US live free or die hard has a pg13
    One real bad thing about the bbfc is that u r not allowed to watch a 12 or 15 rating underage where as it is not that unusual for a man to take his underage son to an r rated film

      Just like the first film Anchorman 2 has a 15 certificate and Die Hard 4 has 15 rating on DVD and Blu-ray (12 in the cinema).
      After Spiderman received a 12 certificate in 2001, parents complained due to his popularity with young kids, so the BBFC created the 12A certificate which is basically the same as your PG-13 rating so parents can go with their kids to see 12 rated films, thanks to Spiderman. 15 and 18 though, yep you need to be that age to see it in the cinema.

      David The difference between 12A and PG-13 is that children can watch PG-13 rated films without adult. PG-13 is just a STRONGER version of PG. 15 and 18 are basically more like NC-17 than R because of the strict rule. They are like NC-15 and NC-18. R is pretty much like the 12A, but it's 17A!

    The BBFC is a lot more accountable to the people. Overall I have nothing but respect for the BBFC but I do sometimes think that with films that they need to take into account changes of Demographics. For example, Willy Wonka the Gene Wilder version is quite scary in parts. Kids today may find that scary compared to us. So that needs to be up to PG as opposed to U.

    South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut should have been given the 18 certificate for its heavy uses for the f word. Sexual content and war violence. So should have Deadpool. The language in the movie was really foul. Ryan Reynolds constantly swearing his mouth off and using the f word and for its sexual content and graphic nudity. Deadpool is more an 18 than a 15. I agree 300 should have been 18 for its extreme bloody graphic violence, sex and nudity.

    U = G

    15 = R
    18 = R/NC-17

    • @thedudewhomadethisvideo
      @thedudewhomadethisvideo  3 года назад +1

      Nope it's more complicated than that. Your G rating is practically extinct, while the U rating is still given very regularly, the new Space Jam got a U but it's PG in America, plenty of pixar films too U here PG in America. We have PG-13 rated films with 15's here like Split, Suicide Squad, Hunger Games all the Maze runner films. We have 12 that have R in America, like the Kings speech, recent best picture winner Nomadland and Mank too, Never Let me Go as well. 18 is not the same as NC-17, it does not have the same stigma. Ratings are complicated, not the same

    • @thedudewhomadethisvideo
      @thedudewhomadethisvideo  2 года назад

      @Conrad Kuntz you sure have gone on a comment rampage on this video. There isn't really an equivalent, I think the NC-17 rating dumb honestly, especially considering the stigma surrounding it, like cinema chains won't screen it and it will get a limited release. So dumb. The 18 rating is just treated like any other rating, still gets promotional material, cinema chains will take it, studios do however sometimes cut the film to get a 15, since 18 rated films don't usually do too well at the box office. It happened to John Wick 2 and the most recent Conjuring film. Don't Breath 2 however is the most recent film to get fully released with an 18 rating. It's also worth noting that there are a few films that got NC-17 which got a 15 uncut over here, like Blue Valentine, Bad Education, But I'm a Cheerleader, The South Park film. No real equivalent, you might think 18 but it doesn't have the same stigma as NC-17

    For those of you saying the NC-17 rating is given by the filmmakers you're wrong. Films rated NC-17 are given only for two reasons
    1. The film contains very explicit sexual content, graphic nudity, and rape. (For example: The Dreamers)
    2. The film contains very graphic intense or extreme violence with a lot more blood and sexual violence. (For example: 100 Tears)
