I saw this on Broadway and it happened to be the 300th performance. Lots of the actual people portrayed were at the performance. I got to meet Captain Beverly Bass, “Tom” Bass of “I’m fine Tom, I’m fine,” and Mayor Claude Elliot!!!
For some reason the final "I'm fine Tom, I'm fine" gets me every single time. I've seen the show live close to 20 times and I still love it. I makes me very proud to be a Canadian.
The "folk music" at the end is traditional Irish music - Newfoundland's first influx of "Come from Aways" was about 35,000 Irish immigrants back in 1810-1820
If you aren't familiar, Newfoundland Celtic Rock is a great genre to listen to. Highly recommend having a listen to Great Big Sea sometime. I started listening to them when we lived in Detroit and could get CBC and TVO on the antenna. Fell in love with the style. Road Rage is one of the fantastic albums of theirs.
@@lauraschilling5088 I also recommend checking out the music of Great Big Sea if folks watching this video like the music the band plays at the end. Wonderful group.
Newfoundland is historically a mix of Irish and West Country England settlers who spread out in tiny bays and inlets to fish. It's only since WWII that there has been real immigration from outside these 2 regions and today is still 90%+ the descendants of the original settlers....thus the accent still being closely related to the old dialects from these 2 regions, and likewise the culture and music,
The Tom Brokaw 10th Anniversary documentary is real. It’s called Operation Yellow Ribbon and they speak to a lot of the real folk these characters are based on. It’s both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Even if you don’t react to it, it’s definitely worth a watch. So glad you enjoyed experiencing a little bit of Newfoundland. I’m very proud of my home province.
I've always loved musicals, and this is in my top 5 for sure. For my birthday this past year my brother took me to see Come From Away--it was the last month it was on Broadway. Half the original cast was there. I'd seen it on Apple TV already, and loved it. It was a powerful experience. I've never seen an audience so reactive to a performance. They were cheering when Nick and Diane kissed instead of kissing the fish. When Hannah tells Beulah that her son has died, the audience started crying, which caused the 2 actresses to start crying, and it took them both a second to compose themselves to continue the song. There were gasps that would ripple through the audience, cheering, laughter--there were moments where I forgot I was watching a performance and felt like I was there in the moment with them. And when it was over, I've never seen a standing ovation like that--everyone immediately leapt to their feet. It was the most incredible experience. This musical is amazing. I loved your reaction.
It was like that when I saw the touring production in Norfolk this March. I had fallen love with the cast album and fell even deeper when I saw it live.
@@tammymoseley1348 I live in Hampton Roads too--I saw it was coming to Norfolk. My parents actually went when it came, but I didn't think anything could beat the experience I'd had in New York, so I didn't see it again. I'm glad it was just as incredible!
I first saw this show here in Toronto, just before they moved to Broadway for the premiere. So we had the entire original cast that was featured in this film. It was something that can’t be described. Moving beyond words. And being that most of us (if not all) in the audience were Canadian, it just made it very special. I think everyone cried multiple times during the show. But there was also laughter and joy.. and I couldn’t tell you how long we stood and cheered for them at the end of the show.. It went on for awhile. It was an incredible experience. I’m so proud of those people from that tiny town in Newfoundland. They showed true kindness, compassion and friendship in a very dark moment in time, when people needed it most.
The interesting part thing about the ten year reunion at the end is that’s where this musical comes from! The playwrights went to the event and interviewed people, and the stories they heard are what they used to write the script!
And each "character" is an amalgam of different people, and their real stories. The story of Beverly Bass, a real person and a real pilot, was used to represent all the air crews. All the donations from the different plane people have now awarded scholarships to hundreds of high school students from Gander and the surrounding area to assist them in their post secondary studies. And the real people who were the 2 mothers of firefighters have both been there for each other as they grieve the loss of their hero sons, the Newfoundland mother's son has also been lost to cancer in recent years. And the two Kevins, who married and divorced since 9/11, have both now been Screeched In. The one who refused to participate in the tradition in 2001 has done so on a later visit. If you would like to see some of the real people whose stories make up this musical, there is a documentary (from I think 2017) that was filmed to coincide with the Broadway opening. Many of the main characters real life inspirations were interviewed about their stories and all attended opening night in New York.
I am a Canadian. I reside in the Province of Ontario. I will have you know that the rest of Canada is the same, what ever province you go to, the kindness and open door policy is the same when there is a crisis as was 9/11 . So much fun to watch this and see your reactions! As a musical fan, it’s really wonderful to see things through the eyes of someone who’s new to all this. I know there seem to be a lot of comments for Phantom of the Opera and it’s a great show. But please consider Sweeney Todd, the recorded stage version with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn, NOT the movie version. It’s a masterpiece.
@@SalvoG There are PBS proshots of two other of Sondheim's best works, Sunday in the Park with George and Into the Woods. These are highly worth watching for yourself, reaction or not. Into the Woods is the only Sondheim I've seen live, and it changed my whole perspective on what a Broadway musical can be and do. Musically, though, Sweeney Todd is his operatic masterpiece.
The producers followed Kevin’s tradition. On every 9/11, everywhere the production was on, in every country that it was appearing, gave cast and crew money to go out during the day before the show, and provide some reactive kindness, volunteer, donate to a charity.
This show doesn't have traditional choreography, but that didn't stop them from performing at the gypsy of the year awards. That video shows more of the humour that's evident in this wonderful show.

He is one of the two Newfies in this proshot. The other is Petrina, who plays Bonnie (and others). If you pay attention during the Screetch In they share a moment as the two non come from aways in the piece
Agreed! But I think a bodhran is an Irish hand drum played with a stick. An ugly stick is probably unique to NF. No shade on you for not being a music nerd.
@@markedwards3647 I meant he played the bodhran and he played the ugly stick in the Screech In scene - two separate instruments. I should have used an & instead of a slash 😆, as I see how that was confusing. I am a music nerd actually-once upon a time I put two years towards my BFA in music prior to deciding to become a nurse… my first job was in high school as a church organist, and I freelanced for weddings… I’m in a semi-professional early music vocal group…. 😉 in this case I made a confusing punctuation choice 😆 Thanks for clearing it up though!
I saw Come From Away in NY and the band playing at the end might have been the best part. I mean, not really the best part - most of the whole play was the best part - but it was really a fantastic way to close the show. Everyone was dancing and clapping and laughing as we left the theatre. Really special.
@@margaretjames6494 That song (“Screech Out”) was originally meant to just be the everybody-leaving-the-theatre music, but nobody left so they ramped it up and it became the cathartic “kitchen party” that it is now. It’s like after going through all the emotional roller coaster of the show, the audience wasn’t ready to be done.
thank you for respectfully sharing this movie, theater piece. I have watched the full film probably 5 time thus far and more to come. The simplicity helps us to know the characters and narrative format and the ensemble work is marvelous. The play is coming the SC this season..... I'll be there!!!
Thanks for doing Come From Away, enjoyed it. My vote for next show would be Phantom of the Opera 25th anniversary show featuring Sierra Boggess as Christine Daae.
The music of Andrew Lloyd Webber is a masterpiece. The production of the 25th anniversary show is second to none. And the partnership between Sierra and Ramin is amazing.
@@marekanthony3935 I know, it was actually my first theater musical experience as an eight year old and let me be obsessed enough to move onto Wicked next😊 After watching a show in Broadway once and then taking a deep dive into every version of the phantom of the opera in books, films, and plays... I must say the 25th anniversary had the best cast with my favorite interpretation of the characters: SPOILERS (like morally grey often gaslight-y Raoul or a Christine who wasn't just innocent and could stand up for herself when insulted, and a phantom that's not as problematically old as he often is)
Salvo - I watched this again as September 11th comes closer. I am one of many people who celebrate their birthday on that date! I listen to this quite a lot on CD and youtube pieces. I so appreciate the people of Newfoundland for what that they did on those days following!!!
I’m going to see this live on tour this summer. The story of how this musical was inspired by the true stories told at that 10th reunion - there’s kind of a documentary. And shows where the actual people who come to see it.
I saw the Dutch version.. Fell absolutely in love with this musical. A LOT of thing happen but it is all very understandable. I love the way they use the clothes and decor to do so much. There is a lot of light moments as well, it is a very hard story, but they make it bearable in a sense. Also LOVE that the band get's their little moment at the end there.
Thank you for this. This is the first time watching Come From Away for me. But I knew the story and I almost lost it in Parts 3 and 4 because I knew that Hannah's firefighter son was lost at ground zero and I was dreading how when and how they would reveal that. When she sang I Am Here, I did lose it. Knowing what happened, but seeing her sing that was too much. It is an amazing show. And it shows the amazing human spirit and the generosity of the people of Gander.
That was FABULOUS! Thank you Salvo G for bringing me the whole stage play. I never would have dreamed I'd see it. Thank you again and for all your other vids. You are appreciated deeply.
Not much to say after this. I’d’ve not teared up but someone was apparently peeling onions. 😉 Ty for watching this. If you want some suggestions of folk music from Newfoundland and the Maritimes, let me know. Cheers.
Newfoundland Music has its own genre of music. It is a mix of Irish and French, English and evolved over time to become its own. Hence the language. We have our own dictionary.
Some of my favourite musicals come from a company called Starkid. They make amazing musicals and upload them to yt. My favourite is the guy who didn't like musicals, but I also love twisted
I just ran across your reaction series. This presentation has deeply affected me and it was an awesome experience to watch it with you and share the greatness of this show. Thanks for sharing yourself with the rest of us.
This is a great show. I have tickets booked to see it twice more, so far, when it comes to my city. There is a book. The day the world came to town that is really worth a read. It has a lot more detail and stories about the people that got stuck in Gander.
I’d recommend doing something Sondheim. Into the Woods and Sunday in the Park with George were both recorded with the original casts (there’s recordings up on RUclips of those that people put up) or Sweeney Todd with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn.
I’m real glad to have found this reaction series. I’m going to see the touring production here in Victoria, BC, later this month and I hope you get a chance to see it live, too.
Just found you and have been watching your plays (Le mez and siagon and this one now) .. love your reactions! you are very geniuine! thank you.. I never saw this play but wanted to, so it was nice watching it the first time with you :) .... I vote for you to see Joseph and the Amazing Techincolor dream coat... or Fiddler on the roof!! .. .

AHHH Congrats on finishing Come From Away, it was so fun watching you react to it as it was actually pretty fresh for me too! It was also my first time reacting to the pro shot, so it was all the more pleasant to hear about your opinion on it, the amount of insight you allow yourself to dive into is honestly that much appreciated and whatever musical you react to next I'm excited! Personally would love to recommend Phantom of the Opera 25th anniversary like a lot of people down here in the comments. Starkid musicals are also great (they don't warrant copyright strikes, to my knowledge, and they have a ton of comedic content you would so DEVOUR) but I'd love for you to go for a classic before moving on to another modern musical. Especially with Phantom of the Opera having ended on Broadway unfortunately, it would be real special for you to react to it.
I agree with all the RENT recommendations (Live performance). I would also recommend The Last Five Years but that one I would suggest the movie version. In the Heights movie was great too!
IT'S Celtic....folk... Newfoundland produces a lot of celtic. It fits with the Iriish and Scotish roots. THe Irish Decendents, Great Big Sea are worth seeing. You should visit sometime-the rock has tremendous people and impressive landscapes.
SONDHEIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are pro shoot/concert versions of: Sunday in the Park with George Into The Woods Sweeney Todd Passion Company (recommend the Neil Patrick Harris concert version)
I love that you are reacting to musicals! I’d like to recommend a couple. “American Idiot” which is based on the Green Day album. Another is Jersey Boys which is about Frankie Vali and the Four Seasons.
I just found your channel because Come from Away is a show I can watch over and over. If you’ve already done reaction videos to these, sorry for repeating, but I’d suggest you watch: Dear Evan Hansen Mean Girls (the musical, not original movie) Both are available on video.
Phantom of the Opera! There's a reason it lasted 35 years on Broadway. It really showcases the spectacle of Broadway, and the music is iconic. I might be biased because it was the first professional Broadway show I ever saw back in 1994 and it blew me away! You can watch the 25th Anniversary with Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess as it was professionally recorded. If Wicked was available (not the poor quality ones on RUclips), I'd definitely say that should be your next one.
Would love to see a reaction to the falsettos revival, it’s such a beautiful musical with a STACKED case Also has a proshot available Also also, it’s a sung through musical so if just listen to it, you’re likely to get the whole plot
Pretty much anything by Summit High School in New Jersey! They put on amazing musicals! Mamma Mia is my favorite you gotta check that out even if you don't react to it. :)
Just a thought on the lack of applause during the show. I am thinking the didn't want to break the flow of it and the emotion would build up for the audience at the end. I still cry when watching it. Love your reactions.
Hello Salvo, idk if you'll see this because I'm a week late in commenting. But, for your next musical reaction, I wonder if you can do a Sondheim show. Honestly, I know people who might suggest more well-known shows (Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, Company) so I'll set them aside, even though I love the first two and haven't fully seen the last one. The shows I'd love to recommend are: - Sunday in the Park With George (Poignant and Sentimental) - Assassins (More political but not overtly, hard for me to comment cuz im not from the US) - Pacific Overtures (Cultural and Abstract) - A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Comedy and Adventure) Truthfully, I'd want for you to just up and watch all of them (though there are other fantasic Sondheim shows I haven't seen myself). Also, even with something like Assassins, I think it's just better to be very open because, as a lot of people know, Sondheim works some kind of magic that makes you connect with even the most absurd of plots/situations Also, I won't be watching the full reaction simply because I myself have not seen Come From Away but it is on my list of shows to watch. Hope you have a great day.
Hi! Because You Loved This Musical, There Is A Documentary Here On RUclips That Very Few People Have Heard About, Know About And Very Few People Have Watched This 46 Minute Documentary Which For Me Is Such An Extraordinary, Magnificent, And Magical Part Which Will Give You The Background Of Exactly How This Musical Even Got Started, Got Created And Came Into Existence! I Really Hope You Watch It And React To It Because I Truly Think You Will Enjoy It And That It Will Truly Inspire You!!!!!
Somebody mentioned it below too.."Rent"...don't do the movie it's not as good as the Stage Version. There is a recording of the final performance on Broadway....RENT: Broadway Production (Full Live Performance, 2008)
I would highly recommend the pro-shot of the Billy Elliot musical live from the West End in London. It’s an absolutely amazing show! It’s set against a fairly turbulent part of British history from the early 80s and is fairly accurate in its depiction.
Am I the only one who wants to see him watch parade? There's a concert version on youtube and it's really good. Other than that I'd like him to see phantom (25th anniversary) or Sweeney Todd
It is still touring. So much of the cast stayed the whole run of the show. 7 of the 12 cast members in the video are the original cast. I highly recommend Rent next the stage recording of the final show, not the movie.

😉 in this case I made a confusing punctuation choice 😆
Thanks for clearing it up though!
I'd love to see you react to Falsettos (2017 proshot), Rent (either the movie or the 2008 proshot), Tick tick boom (movie) or Company!
The production of Company starring Raul Esparza is my personal fave.
Operation Yellow Ribbon, the Brokaw documentary, which aired during the Vancouver Olympics. More stories to react to!
Even better was You Are Here, A Come From Away story. Meet the people, see how the musical came to be and the Broadway premiere.
Ive watched this filmed version a few times, but i got to see the National tour in Lima Ohio last night. It was so good live!
Thanks for doing Come From Away, enjoyed it.
My vote for next show would be Phantom of the Opera 25th anniversary show featuring Sierra Boggess as Christine Daae.
Yes to Phantom - such a great filmed performance and Ramin and Sierra are just amazing!
Ooh yeah, phantom would be great!
AHHH I'm so excited for that!
I must say the 25th anniversary had the best cast with my favorite interpretation of the characters:
SPOILERS
(like morally grey often gaslight-y Raoul or a Christine who wasn't just innocent and could stand up for herself when insulted, and a phantom that's not as problematically old as he often is)
Salvo - I watched this again as September 11th comes closer.

"Gander's Ripple Effect: How a Small Town's Kindness Opened on Broadway" - it's excellent.
I wonder if they set up donation boxes at the exits so people could donate to the Gander Scholarship. That would have been an excellent tribute.
I recommend the 2008 version of Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway - it was professionally recorded at the Nederlander Theater on its closing night.
The pro shots of Billy Elliot live and newsies are musts!!! Both completely different vibes but both jaw dropping!!
This musical always makes me cry in my opinion, it’s way too underrated of a musical. I’m so glad I got to see it on Broadway
Phantom of the Opera 25th anniversary, Rent the final Broadway performance, or maybe Kinky Boots to react to next. This was a great reaction series.
Excellent!!
Not much to say after this. I’d’ve not teared up but someone was apparently peeling onions. 😉 Ty for watching this. If you want some suggestions of folk music from Newfoundland and the Maritimes, let me know. Cheers.
I’d take those suggestions if you have them!
I left the Rock 21 years ago. This musical makes me want to return.
Thanks for watching Come from away!! It's such an amazing musical
My vote is for Rent!
What a beautiful musical and story. Loved it !!! Thanks for doing this SalvoG.
Ty!
@@SalvoGand everything depicted in the show but not to the characters
And the Kevins were from Texas and broke up several years later- not due to this
Thnx Salvo. This was very good. Enjoy the evening
Somethings Missing is so heavy of a song
This is a great show. I have tickets booked to see it twice more, so far, when it comes to my city. There is a book. The day the world came to town that is really worth a read. It has a lot more detail and stories about the people that got stuck in Gander.
Would love to see Rent (final Broadway performance), Kinky Boots, Phantom 25th anniversary or Shrek (so underrated but great music and so funny!!!)
I’d recommend doing something Sondheim. Into the Woods and Sunday in the Park with George were both recorded with the original casts (there’s recordings up on RUclips of those that people put up) or Sweeney Todd with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn.
Ooo into the woods yyyyeeeeeessss
Fiddler on the Roof (Topol as Tevya) please.
I’m real glad to have found this reaction series. I’m going to see the touring production here in Victoria, BC, later this month and I hope you get a chance to see it live, too.
Les Miserables 25th at the O2. Amazing!
Just found you and have been watching your plays (Le mez and siagon and this one now) .. love your reactions! you are very geniuine! thank you.. I never saw this play but wanted to, so it was nice watching it the first time with you :) .... I vote for you to see Joseph and the Amazing Techincolor dream coat... or Fiddler on the roof!! .. .
here is the link on RUclips to the documentary (Full Documentary: Gander's Ripple Effect: How a Small Town's Kindness Opened on Broadway) about how the musical came about and when it was performed in Gander before going to Broadway. ruclips.net/video/LTNDRvUqVQA/видео.htmlsi=vbswYaAguOCBtVzp
Thanks so much for the kind words glad you enjoyed. I see a lot of votes for phantom
There is a national tour right now. Not sure where you’re located, but I saw it last night. The show is SO impactful in person.
There are pro shoot/concert versions of:
Sunday in the Park with George
Into The Woods
Sweeney Todd
Passion
Company (recommend the Neil Patrick Harris concert version)
Agree on the NPH version of Company.
I prefer the Raul Esparza version because of how fast Not Getting Married goes
Adding another Kinky Boots suggestion for your next musical!
Next musical I vote for either Rent or Phantom of the Opera. 😊
I love that you are reacting to musicals! I’d like to recommend a couple. “American Idiot” which is based on the Green Day album. Another is Jersey Boys which is about Frankie Vali and the Four Seasons.
Sweeney Todd, the stage version with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn. Or the stage version of Into the Woods with Bernadette Peters.
Love your musical reactions!
I would love to see you react to Newsies.
I just found your channel because Come from Away is a show I can watch over and over. If you’ve already done reaction videos to these, sorry for repeating, but I’d suggest you watch:
Dear Evan Hansen
Mean Girls (the musical, not original movie)
Both are available on video.
I recommend watching Operation Yellow Ribbon. It’s the documentary about Gander and what took place there. It’s fantastic!!
Shows with public proshots are kinda rare, but Ghost Quartet is on youtube
Phantom of the Opera! There's a reason it lasted 35 years on Broadway. It really showcases the spectacle of Broadway, and the music is iconic. I might be biased because it was the first professional Broadway show I ever saw back in 1994 and it blew me away! You can watch the 25th Anniversary with Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess as it was professionally recorded. If Wicked was available (not the poor quality ones on RUclips), I'd definitely say that should be your next one.
Ride the cyclone is really good!! (((:
If you like this style of music: Great Big Sea, Stan Rogers, Alan Doyle, The Navigators are the band playing during the credits.
Would love to see a reaction to the falsettos revival, it’s such a beautiful musical with a STACKED case
Also has a proshot available
Also also, it’s a sung through musical so if just listen to it, you’re likely to get the whole plot
Where can you watch this?!? I saw it on stage and would love to be able to watch it again non stop
I suggest also watching Operation Yellow Ribbon and Gander's Ripple Effect
Pretty much anything by Summit High School in New Jersey! They put on amazing musicals! Mamma Mia is my favorite you gotta check that out even if you don't react to it. :)
Just a thought on the lack of applause during the show. I am thinking the didn't want to break the flow of it and the emotion would build up for the audience at the end. I still cry when watching it. Love your reactions.
RENT final broadway performance.
The band has a great time at the end, and the audience is all wound up and can’t stop clapping.
Thy caught the essence of our true Newfoundland music!
You should go back and watch the end credits, it shows pictures of the real people the story was based on.
K D Lang Hallelujah
Hello Salvo, idk if you'll see this because I'm a week late in commenting. But, for your next musical reaction, I wonder if you can do a Sondheim show. Honestly, I know people who might suggest more well-known shows (Into the Woods, Sweeney Todd, Company) so I'll set them aside, even though I love the first two and haven't fully seen the last one.
The shows I'd love to recommend are:
- Sunday in the Park With George (Poignant and Sentimental)
- Assassins (More political but not overtly, hard for me to comment cuz im not from the US)
- Pacific Overtures (Cultural and Abstract)
- A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Comedy and Adventure)
Truthfully, I'd want for you to just up and watch all of them (though there are other fantasic Sondheim shows I haven't seen myself). Also, even with something like Assassins, I think it's just better to be very open because, as a lot of people know, Sondheim works some kind of magic that makes you connect with even the most absurd of plots/situations
Also, I won't be watching the full reaction simply because I myself have not seen Come From Away but it is on my list of shows to watch.
It Would Probably Help If You Knew The Background Of This Story That I Think You Would Love And That You Should Watch And React To And Here Is The Name Of The Video “Full Documentary: Gander’s Ripple Effect: How A Small Town’s Kindness Opened On Broadway”!!!!! I Really Hope You Watch It And React To It Because I Truly Think You Will Enjoy It And That It Will Truly Inspire You!!!!!
The reason that there weren't breaks for applause was that for five days there were no breaks for rest.
That sounds really interesting actually
Am I the only one who wants to see him watch parade? There's a concert version on youtube and it's really good. Other than that I'd like him to see phantom (25th anniversary) or Sweeney Todd
Irish Celtic folk music
How about some old-school? "West Side Story" or "Annie" and if you've never seen it, "The Wizard of Oz."
My vote is for the 2014 NY Philharmonic Concert version of Sweeney Todd. A concert version sounds boring but I promise it is so much more.
It is still touring. So much of the cast stayed the whole run of the show. 7 of the 12 cast members in the video are the original cast. I highly recommend Rent next the stage recording of the final show, not the movie.
The North American tour finishes up this month.
Better than Tom Brakow’s doc is 60 Minutes Australia’s ‘Kindness of Strangers’
