I thought I was the only one…sure the touch control does take a bit to get used to. Wish there was a option for button control but it was unique, great graphics kept the essence of winder waker waker, and I’ll always give points for a Zelda game for NOT using Ganon/Ganondorf as the villain of the game. I do agree dungeons look very uninspired and bland but they crammed almost every feature of the DS in both Zelda games that for most part worked well.
I spent so many hours playing on the Nintendo DS. What an amazing handheld with hundreds of great games. Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, WarioWare, Mario Party, Ace Attorney, Scribblenauts Kirby and many more, some of the games I played the most on the system. Can't believe it's been 20 years now!
I've just finished 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors on the Nintendo DS and it is a must-play visual novel, even in 2024. I would only ever play it on the DS as well given the way it makes use of the dual screens.
As someone who played this game and fell in love with this series with the Steam port, I would rather play that version. The voice acting is incredible and elevates the experience and the only thing lost is the ease of accessing both screens of information (they are still present however with just a button press so it isn't that inaccessible) and the DS version's superior final puzzle (that being said, it isn't that great of a puzzle so again, you aren't losing much) Still though, everyone should experience that game, no matter the platform! The best writing in games, bar none
One of the games that makes the hardware essential to the experience, impossible to replicate in a port or another medium. Peak video game storytelling through the gameplay.
I remember when I first got the Nintendo DS back in middle school: my first two games for the system were Sonic Rush and Viewtiful Joe. Man, those were some good days 🤗
I didn't know that Europe had such a strong start lineup. I bought the DS day one in Germany together with M64 and I still have a core memory playing Prime Hunters Demo with a friend of mine and he was sitting in his car and I was sitting in my car just next to each other. Touch screens were still pretty uncommon at that time and playing with someone together without the need of a wire, was pure magic...
I've literally not stopped playing DS since the first day I got one. Not only are there thousands of great games, many DS games are also highly replayable.
The DS was such a great system, so many fun memories of playing PictoChat and Mario Kart DS Download with friends in middle school 😃Another game I remember fondly and which might be a little hidden gem is Age of Empires: The Age of Kings.
I'd like it if Nintendo Music had a sleep timer. If you turn off loop, it just generates an infinite queue to keep playing. So there's no way to say, listen to a playlist for an hour or two while falling asleep. And auto-stop so it's not playing all night.
I do one earbud sometimes, particularly when I want to be able to hear my surroundings. Can't say I was interested in the DS when it launched. It was only when the DS Lite was announced and shown off that I jumped on the DS train.
My favorite memory of the DS was from 2007 when I was doing my military service. I brought my DS and some Castlevania games with me, and many other people suddenly started playing Castlevania. I even bought Portrait of Ruin, which was brand new back then. I have never seen so many people playing Castlevania since then. Or before.
Super Mario Bros 1993 movie NOW? Oh if only you did that around the time of the Illumination movie release... ahhh better late than never but... thoughts and prayers :P
They might be skipping a few consoles/handhelds but I think a Nintendo DS Classic Edition would be a huge sales sucess. Bringing back 20-30 ds/dsi games on their own separate handheld. While bringing back online play. Here's what a game selection could look like: 1. Mario 64 DS 2. New Super Mario Bros 3. Mario Kart DS 4. Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story 5. Legend of Zelda Spirit Tracks 6. Pokemon Platinum 7. Kirby Canvas Curse 8. Animal Crossing Wild World 9. Advance Wars Dual Strike 10. Elite Beat Agents 11. Nintendogs 12. Rhythm Heaven 13. Wario Ware Touched 14. Club House Games 15. Tetris DS 16. Picross 3D 17. The World Ends with You 18. Sonic Rush 19. Professor Layton and the Curious Village 20. Shantae Risky Revenge 21. Flipnote studio 22. Brain Age 23. Art Academy 24. Metroid Prime Hunters 25. Doctor Mario Express
Spotify actually doesn't have the ranking system Apple Music does. It simply shows number of plays next to each song and an artist's top 5 or 10 depending on how you're viewing their artist page. 2:02:14
Cant believe the DS is over 20 years old! Looks like the game system aged well. I remember a friend of mine telling me about the greatness of the DS, especially with the variants of DSi and Lite. Mario and Luigi Brothership will be a game I'll play later in the month. Glad to be apart of the 1up Club
They didn't choose my DS story so I'll copy it here: One time as a kid I was playing something on my DS. I suddenly lost track of where I had put my stylus. (I had the original chunk o' matic version of the DS that came with the teeny tiny stylus) After searching my bedroom for a while and not discovering it, I ran downstairs in a panic and asked my sister if she had seen it anywhere. "It's in your hand." She said.
@@kitandkrysta I got one when I was back in 2011 for Christmas and it was just a revolution, a few years went by and I was a bit older and wanted a 3DS so I was circling every single ad for one in catalog I could find. When I got one I couldn’t be any happier… man nostalgia can make you emotional, I remember watching Nintendo Minute on the eShop trips with my family when we were staying in a hotel with the buggy Wi-Fi 🥹❤️
Nintendo DS was a powerhouse of a little console. What started off as a third pillar platform, ended up becoming Nintendo‘s best selling system of all time. This is going to be a fun episode!
I remember watching the first Mario movie when it came out on VHS. I loved it. I have it on DVD, and I actually want to get the new 4k version that came out recently. However, it's sold out at the moment 😔
I had no idea today was the DS’s birthday. And 3 days after mine. I coincidentally started playing Pokémon Black again, today on my dad’s old pirated DS, I never had a normal DS, I only had my dad’s pirated DS. It was so nostalgic going back. It wasn’t a legal DS but it was such a big part of my childhood. I remember finding the level editor in the Mini Mario Vs. Donkey Kong game, and made so many levels that I crashed the DS so hard that my dad needed to take it back to his pirate friend to revive the pirated DS. That’s where I learned I wanted to be a game developer.
Can't believe that the DS is now 20 years old now I just can't believe it. As for my favorite Nintendo DS game game well that belong to Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story absolutely love that game.
So many great DS games, I think it's still my favorite retro console! It was also Level-5 prime: Layton, Inazuma Eleven, Ni no Kuni (Danball Senki that went from PSP to 3DS)! DS got me into visual novels and similar, someone already mentioned the masterpiece 999 but also Ace Attorney, Trauma Center, Ghost Trick, etc. Plus we've started getting some remasters, like Another Code / Trace Memory that were eponymous with the console. Dual Screen gaming needs to come back for sure! It was pretty convenient.
There's already a Pokemon episode where the Pokemon all talk to each other. They just had Meowth talk for them but it is clear they can communicate with each other. They could just have subtitles for Pokemon talking to each other but still make Pokemon sounds. I think there was a Pokemon short for one of the movies that did this.
Nothing will ever come close to the hype cycle building up to the DS release for me. I remember being so excited that I made a diary counting down the days lol. Early DS era was magical.
My pink DS Lite broke when I opened it one day - the right side just snapped off! Even still, it didn't turn off. All I had to do was super glue it back on and it still worked perfectly (though I had to be more gentle!).
My mom bought me the DS Lite and Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia and some games I forgot at a Target store when I was 10. She bought it for me in November and she told me that I couldn’t play the DS until Christmas Day. So she put the console and games in the attic and I would go up in attic to just admire the DS lite and games and i really wanted to open them. Finally, i was able to play the DS on Christmas Day and the rest was history.
2:11:53 but Pokémon talk to each other all the time in the show. They understand each other, it’s just that the humans don’t understand them. I feel like if the did go the route of understanding what they say, it’d be subtitled like the old episode Island of the Giant Pokémon
Did Kit and Krysta ever talk on their podcast about the show Nintendo Week weekly show on the Wii channel Nintendo Channel and the hosts Gary, Alison and Dark Gary? If you guys see this, please share memories! That show was iconic, especially the deliciously ridiculous March 1, 2010 episode.
I think Nintendo succeeded with marketing this thing to everyone. Of course, we kids had one, sometimes two or three, and we all love our Pokemon, but it wasn't uncommon for adults in the dentist waiting room playing their DS. (Although they usually had a little piracy device instead of actual game cards. Bad stuff.)
I dont care what people say about Pokemon Pocket, i LOVE IT!! It was clearly designed for the typical busy person. Games are quicker and deck building is much easier and faster. So i highly recommend for people that have busy lives and miss playing pokemon.
It's funny looking back at the original DS. It's the first game system I bought with my own money. I remember the girl at GameStop being very hyper. I have never seen anyone match her energy since. But anyway, I got the DS and Super Mario 64 with it. I remember being surprised at how they managed to fit a N64 game into a little cartridge for the DA, with even MORE packed in it! So, the DS is a neat little system that I made plenty use with the Game Boy games it can play.
I remember getting my DS like it was yesterday. First games I got was New Super Mario Bros., Sonic Rush, and Pokémon White. Such great days those were, I miss them🌟
I remember when my best friend and I got mario Kart DS. He and I both had a DS. We would go to a local ciffeeshop that had wifi .we would go there a lot to play Mario kart DS online. The first nintrndo online game session we ever experienced. Such an awesome first impression
Omg, I was at that Universal Citywalk DS Launch event with one of my friends from high school. I didn’t preorder it at the GameStop there, but I did get it day one.
About the Pokémon question: I recently watched the Zarude movie, and they had a thing there where the viewer could sometimes understand Pokémon communication
There have been multiple news reports about toxic positivity at Firewalk. I think Kotaku was one. Basically you were not allowed to criticize the game at all.
I love the 90s Mario movie, it's like they made it on an acid trip and slapped the Mario brand on it. The recent Blu Ray release it got was great too 😎
"Should dual screen gaming comeback?" you asked. "YES." I almost screamed at my screen. There isn't a console I miss like the DS/3DS line (despite still playing on it). I don't care how they do it, I want a second screen on the next console, I want it so bad.
Can't wait for the SMB 93 Spoilercast! I was kind of the prime demographic for that movie and I used to ask my grandma to rent it from blockbuster every weekend lol! Also, SM64 DS was the first game I ever bought with my own money...and immediately returned it lol. The controls were just too strange and not as tight as the original.
I didn’t get the DS at launch because I thought it was really ugly (I still do). But I got the Nintendo DS Lite shortly after launch. Now that model was SEXY!
I wouldn't be surprised if NSO gets renamed eventually, but for now it makes sense to bundle the music app with the NSO subscription. For the base level of $20/year, the music app alone has made the subscription worth it for me again. That's technically less than $2/month! Smart move by Nintendo. The most likely rename probably would be something like Nintendo Online and just taking the Switch part out. But we know how Nintendo likes their funny names sometimes, so we'll see, haha. Also I agree, Krysta, that the Bratz games were so much fun! I didn't have them for the DS, but I had 2 for the GameCube. They were some of my favorite GC games growing up.
I’m about 4 hours into Brothership and so far the IGN review is making 0 sense to me It’s just been excellent so far (I’ve played every Mario&Luigi game 3 times, Paper Jam once)
Because ign wants to downplay mario and Luigi brothership to help the sales and prevent the cannibalizing of the ps5 pro. They were also payed by someone to give that 5 to the game.
I pity the person that has to manually tag every song in the Nintendo library with Composer(s), Arranger(s), Performer(s), Recorder(s), Mixer(s), Mastering Master(s), etcetera… and all these credits do exist in the CD booklets for Official Soundtrack releases from Nintendo, but no one has manually tagged each song.
I remember how weird the DS seemed at first, especially with them claiming it will be their "third pillar" ON TOP of the Gamecube and GBA. Like, what? It also looked very underpowered and goofy compared to the PSP. But, like you say, hindsight is 20/20 lol
Kit seriously spend 10 minutes teaching Krysta how to play the Pokemon TCG game?! Its not that complicated since kids play this game. Love to see her try to learn Yu-Gi-Oh! lol
As far as Xenoblade X censorship I don't care at all they changed Lin's swimsuit. Generally all party members in Xenoblade have different swimsuits anyway, but not in X, where I think there is one outfit per gender. The idea that they put the skimpy adult swimsuit on Lin is dumb in the first place Boob slider, it's not a dealbreaker either way, but I do think it should be in. Phantasy Star has one. Shouldn't really be an issue.
I'd say nintendo 3ds is my number 1 favourite console although I basically never used the 3d mode lol but I'd so love switch 2 to have the small size like a 3ds where you can bring it everywhere with you
I think something that is less remembered about the DS, it probably wouldn't have been as successful without the big 3rd party support. Being weaker, 2D games were more commonplace on it and sold okay on it so 3rd party developers making lower-scope 2D games chose the DS as their target. Releasing a 2D pixel-art game on the PSP was suicide. The audience there wanted the biggest and best tech for the first several years. The other thing was Nintendo's Wii-era pivot and the DS Lite. The DS wouldn't have been as successful as it was without that either. And the touch screen opened up lots of casual games, PopCap-style games. Which frankly... should come back I wanna see more of those. I hate mobile gaming today. I miss java games lol.
DS hits a sore spot for me. I have practically every game on every console I’ve ever had, going back 30 years… except my DS games. I stored all the carts loose in a ziplock baggie. I just have no clue whatever happened to that baggie. I miss those games. I miss my Pokemon. I actually went through the trouble of transferring my Pokemon generation to generation and now they are all lost on some DS cart in the middle of god knows where
Part of me want to buy a Nintendo DS 😀🔥👍🏽Though that ive got my 2DS to play my DS games but i want to buy a DS for part of my handheld collection of my own

Me: Do you know what a Nintendo Link Cable is? Today's Gamer: Oh, you mean Link's grab in Smash? its called a 'Hook Shot' Bruh. Insert 'Comic Rimshot' here, lol.
I hated the cheapness of the DS Lite. The GBA butted out, it was dumb. Why not just make the DS Lite just a little wider. I much prefer the black matte DSi.

There isn't a console I miss like the DS/3DS line (despite still playing on it). I don't care how they do it, I want a second screen on the next console, I want it so bad.
Picturing Krysta describing a palm pilot while saying ‘You see” with white hair, wearing some cute ole lady reading glasses in a rocking chair
Gerald Robotnik is Eggman's grandfather, Eggman's name is Ivo I think.
46:24 yes! I loved the pink ds lite!
I'd take dual screen. I liked the DS and the second screen of the Wii U.
Released just as sudoku was taking off, there were dozens and dozens of sudoku games.
The DS being a lifestyle device is such a weird idea to me. If they want this for the Nintendo Switch 2, they basically need to make a phone.
I didn’t get the DS at launch because I thought it was really ugly (I still do). But I got the Nintendo DS Lite shortly after launch. Now that model was SEXY!
Forced positivity seems to take away from genuine emotions in story telling in games
It especially doesn't mesh well with the DA series' usual dark world and stories. The game is just bad from top to bottom
Simple then: prove it was forced?
I’m about 4 hours into Brothership and so far the IGN review is making 0 sense to me
It’s just been excellent so far
(I’ve played every Mario&Luigi game 3 times, Paper Jam once)
Because ign wants to downplay mario and Luigi brothership to help the sales and prevent the cannibalizing of the ps5 pro. They were also payed by someone to give that 5 to the game.
3:37 yo antdude rocks
I saw 1993 Mario movie in theaters. I loved it. It was different, but funny. I have watched it since. I own the DVD. I still love it.
I adore the Chunk-o-matic version how dare thou insult it
I pity the person that has to manually tag every song in the Nintendo library with Composer(s), Arranger(s), Performer(s), Recorder(s), Mixer(s), Mastering Master(s), etcetera… and all these credits do exist in the CD booklets for Official Soundtrack releases from Nintendo, but no one has manually tagged each song.
Love to see her try to learn Yu-Gi-Oh! lol
What the-Super Mario Bros. Movie? Oh man, it’s gonna be a trip
Please monitor your comments.
I saw the 93 movie in the theaters when it came out. I enjoyed it then, I would be curious to see how I feel about it now.
As far as Xenoblade X censorship
I don't care at all they changed Lin's swimsuit. Generally all party members in Xenoblade have different swimsuits anyway, but not in X, where I think there is one outfit per gender. The idea that they put the skimpy adult swimsuit on Lin is dumb in the first place
Boob slider, it's not a dealbreaker either way, but I do think it should be in. Phantasy Star has one. Shouldn't really be an issue.
Bought my DS Phat while on tour in Iraq 2004. Still have my Metroid Prime Hunters Demo as a memento.
I was today years old when I found out what PDA stood for
Watch Nintendo release a DS classic that can be use to connect to Pokémon Home so GBA, GC, DS, and Wii Pokémon can be transferred over 😅
Thank you for voting for Kamala, Krysta!
It's tough!! I'm struggling on the Lapras event Expert section
I'm struggling to win fast. I need better cards.
Grab cards from the Pikachu pack and try to get a Pikachu EX or Zapdos. Very strong cards
My top 5 nintendo consoles are
NES
SNES
DS
Wii
SWITCH
I also play marvel snap every day and I’ve thought the pokemon tcg pocket was a little confusing too.
Extraordinary man
DS hits a sore spot for me. I have practically every game on every console I’ve ever had, going back 30 years… except my DS games. I stored all the carts loose in a ziplock baggie. I just have no clue whatever happened to that baggie. I miss those games. I miss my Pokemon. I actually went through the trouble of transferring my Pokemon generation to generation and now they are all lost on some DS cart in the middle of god knows where
Part of me want to buy a Nintendo DS 😀🔥👍🏽Though that ive got my 2DS to play my DS games but i want to buy a DS for part of my handheld collection of my own
Gta chinatown wars is one of my favorite ds games and looking back on it having little touchscreen minigames for selling cocaine and hotwiring cars is really funny
Me: Do you know what a Nintendo Link Cable is?
Today's Gamer: Oh, you mean Link's grab in Smash? its called a 'Hook Shot' Bruh.
Insert 'Comic Rimshot' here, lol.
I found a DS fat when moving house and have no idea where it came from, as my original was broken by my cousin and was replaced with a DS lite.
I hated the cheapness of the DS Lite. The GBA butted out, it was dumb. Why not just make the DS Lite just a little wider. I much prefer the black matte DSi.
In 2 more years it will be the 20th anniversary of the Nintendo wii
I definitely do not want dual-screen to come back.
"DRAGON QUEST!!... uh AGE...." oh NAUR 😂 Can't wait for Dragon Quest 3
51:13 Yo Kit be having me laugh so hard 😂🤣🥲 when disagrees with Krysta about certain things he ain’t lying about that iPod Shuffle that was a greedy cash grab for Apple 🍎 LOL!!! 51:15
GAF shout-out!
mario bros 1993 spoiler cast is insane about to reup my patreon lmao
Or course can't forget Game Boy
