    Tbh caning a child as a discipline action may make a child more rebellious if you keep on caning them because they are used to the pain already. The pain to them is nothing since they are used to it. I was cane a lot when I was younger like my parents would tie a few canes together and hit me because I didn’t get full marks for my spelling. Did it work? No, did I ever get full marks for my spelling from caning, no, so I got hit for nothing. Also, I actually see nothing good about caning, it makes your kids scared as you and afraid to make mistakes, growing up they might think I must be perfect, I cannot make mistakes. This will make a big impact on their physical and mental health

    When an adult is not competent in well communication, poor management of emotion, don't put in enough time in the above with the child... When talking needs skills, time and effort. Not everyone has it or wants to grow in it. One of the fastest way to get things done - fear and pain. Learn the lesson or not? I think most will only remember the pain and experience of caning but not the reason why one got caned. They could have a vague idea from the adult eg- you were naughty, not listening, stubborn and don't follow my rule etc but these, could actually be resolved with communication and understanding the reason behind all these- but again, it takes up time, effort and skills.

      The most primeval and organic feeling for a human being is physical feeling. The punish someone physically, with the pretext and undertone that they UNDERSTAND AND KNOW why they are being punished this way and that they should not do the crime again, is an amazing way to deter people from committing crimes and become better individuals. This is why caning is so effective, because it is the most natural way of crime deterrence for human beings, which are also animals. It is much more effective than the over-enthusiastic and naive ways of doing things in the west and also the Scandinavian countries, where the judge shake hands with mass murderers...
      Caning is actually a very smart way to deter crime, just need to make sure it is done appropriately and not abusively lah.,,

Why waste 10,20,30 minutes to talk or cajole or reason with them when you can just whip out a cane? As someone who have been subjected to hours of punishment at one go (caning, belting, chilli in mouth, kneeling...) I can tell you that it does nothing except push me further and further away. Once I'm big enough, strong enough, nothing can get thru to me anymore. So the answer to whether to cane or not, the answer is a big fat NO!

    it depends on "how", "when" and at "under what circumstances" canning are used. Canning in itself is just a blunt brute action. however, if it is used appropriately and only at the last resort (at home when disciplining children), it serves as a great deterrence, warning and consequence management (lesson) for a child's growing up journey.

      @@PatheticTV in my opinion, it depends on the scenario.
      If you're caning a child for every little mistake(eg. Bad grades, break something, staying out late without informing parents) can(and in some cases, have) result in a more rebellious attitude growing up, and can produce negative results.
      But there are cases where I see caning as necessary. Such as doing things that REALLY crosses the line(eg. Stealing/shoplifting, underage smoking, drugs/substance abuse, etc.).
      I am of the belief that "every action has its consequences", and when a child makes a mistake, it is up to us parents to meet out the appropriate punishment. Violent punishments should always be a last resort, a "nuclear deterrent", so to speak. There are other ways to instill discipline without using violent means(eg. Doing push-ups, holding buckets filled with water(appropriate for each age range, of course), holding half-squat position with a bag of rice, etc.)
      tl;dr: I believe in using the "carrot-stick" method to teach children. Use gifts as an incentive to drive them to do better, and meet out the appropriate punishments when they do something wrong. You don't have to punish them if they fail their exams, but be firm enough to teach them that some things in life must be earned.

    • @Gehslol
      @Gehslol 2 года назад

      yaa. I think physical punishment can be accepted if parents do their due RESPONSIBILITY to assess if the child even deserves physical punishment in the first place and then to communicate that clearly. The problem most people have with physical punishment is because alot of parents inflict physical punishment as a result of feeling angry, and without ever separating their anger from the punishment...

  • @Jacob-he9dl

    Canning doesn’t solve anything.
    It just makes the situation worse. Sit down with your kid and have a chat with them, understand where they are coming from. They need a friend and not a parent in these situations. Canning doesn’t make them respect you, it only makes them scared of you which is an incredibly bad thing as you are letting them know that they can’t be open and honest with you.
    Which motivates bad behaviour.

      Or perhaps they are the best people to form an opinion on it, they were the ones to experience it and the majority still feel like it was necessary, that says something, and I don't believe it can entirely be thrown in with the notion that they have been conditioned, surely if it was an entirely negative event in their lives people would be for the most part against the practice? That doesn't seem to be the case.
      This is compounded by the fact that most countries have not outlawed the use of "corporal" punishment in terms of parents with their children in certain scenarios, "smacking" for one. The use of implements such as a cane is for the most part banned however.

    • @wynngoes
      @wynngoes 2 года назад

      @@harrier331 Perhaps so. It makes sense at first glance that if they got through being caned without significant trauma and are decent people now, maybe there is merit to it. In fact, studies on corporal punishment have found that it has one positive outcome - compliance. It makes children do what you say in that moment. There are several negative outcomes, however, the biggest being the strain on parent-child relationships.
      Anyways, I do believe that when such physical discipline is widely practiced in a society, it normalises it and people will feel like it's just a regular part of growing up. It's easier to believe that you deserved that punishment and that your parents meant well. After all, children are dependent on their parents and will find ways to cope with all kinds of parenting imperfections. There's a saying that goes: "A child that is abused by their parents will not stop loving their parents. They will stop loving themselves." At the same time, there may be some resentment towards their parents too, and certain emotional needs may be left unmet.
      Importantly, now that we have better access to parenting skills and understanding of the needs of children, there are surely more effective ways to set boundaries, and do less harm.

    Beating children is barbaric whatever you call it. Adults can understand rules and take responsibility for their actions and caning as a punishment might make sense and even be better than long solitary and way better than informal punishment the guards enforce in more backwards countries. There needs to be a system of rewards and punishment in place for people. Then again, Singapore still has capital punishment so caning doesn't seem such a bat thing for the place.

Me personally I grew up on this kind of discipline and I feel like it made me into a stronger more mentally focused individual. It really boils down to the person. American incarceration is cruel and unusual punishment so that for some offenders especially first time male offenders we should reduce the time of incarceration when caning is used as punishment. Some criminals must remain incarcerated for the safety of society but other criminals could benefit from the pain and humiliation of caning to deter recidivism. We should experiment with the caning punishment for male offenders only, even offering caning as an option to longer incarceration. Prisons in the United States are dangerous unsanitary places and daily prison life is enough to drive offenders insane. Most prisoners will be released at the end of their sentences. Recidivism is high among American prisoners, so incarceration is not deterring crime. In most American prisons there are few efforts at rehabilitation. On the other hand, depending upon the crime committed caning could be very effective as the Singapore experience shows at deterring crime and recidivism. Of course in the United States we have financial reasons for expanding the prison population in both the private for profit and publicly funded prisons.
